We open conference play tonight against Texas Tech in Austin.

Tech’s backcourt leads in scoring with guards Toussant and Isaacs. Isaacs was the Big 12 Player of the Week last week, and he can really get on a roll. For the bigs, Cambridge was scoring in the double digits, but he went down with a season ending injury. 7’0” Washington is a windex man on the boards, and can be counted on for some garbage points off the offensive boards.

Tech’s stat sheet shows a noticeably high number of assists, so they really move the ball around a lot.

Tech comes in with 2 losses at 11-2, like us.

Should be a good one. Go Horns!

Tech is controlling the game. We’re lucky to only be down by 4 at halftime.
 
Big 7’0” Washington is eating us up. He already has 11 points and is a powerful force in the paint.
 
Abmas is getting a hot hand. Mitchell with an unforced turnover.

Back and forth now. Tie game.
 
Isaacs is ridiculous.

This is kind of what I expected, especially knowing that it would be Tech's last game ever in Austin and they would use the Pop Isaacs sexual assault lawsuit as a "circle the wagons" moment for their squad.

We can't win when our opponents score unopposed. They had far too many looks, layups, and uncontested shots. Meanwhile, they did their best to make our shots look difficult. Disu and Shedrick were a combined 4-16 on shots that otherwise would have fallen against all our inferior opponents.

The turnovers... gah. Several of them were on numbers breaks in which we clearly had an extra guy ahead of theirs and still threw it away anyhow. Abmas doesn't need the ball in his hands unless he's going to put it up.

Our home court "advantage" was basically **** tonight. Tons of Raider fans and pulling the same crap as the last few years. RT has done absolutely nothing to get anyone excited about anything for the 2023-24 season, and if this trend continues, I doubt we'll be able to keep Johnson or Scott in the fold. And if we play on the road like we did at home tonight, my best guess is 7-11 in the XII. Good enough for the NIT, I suppose.

There just didn't seem to be any sense of urgency - don't understand the carelessness with the ball - Big 12 is too good - will be interesting to see what happens from here - on the road at Cincy Tuesday.....

This team is a right, proper mess. Hard to watch. I know little about the game but there seems to be only four good players. There are no big men and the little guys aren’t great shooters. In conference play, the only way this team gets to 7-11 is when they go buy a six pack on MLK..and even that is assuming it’s still there.

The high water mark for this team appears to be .500 in conference play and that is probably a pipe dream. At present you would pencil in two losses to bailor and fifth ward and a loss to Kansas and probably byu on the road. But that is why they play the games. This team is a finesse team (that’s the most generous description I can give) in a physical conference. They have not improved in any area of deficiencies that I can see. With the weak non conference schedule, bad habits develop because you are simply have better athletes than the opponent. The only two good teams played were losses and middling to poor power 5 teams (lsu and Louisville) were dogfights. I don’t think the issues with the team are going anywhere anytime soon. Texas is not a good defensive team. Opposing guards can shoot over the Texas guards, especially Abmas, at will. The switching defense has been poor all year as has rebounding. Texas can block some shots from help defense but on ball defense generally is not that good. On offense Abmas is having trouble consistently getting good looks, and they have been sloppy with the ball all year. I said on another thread that they will have to shoot 40+ % from three to have a chance against good teams. That may happen a few times but not something to count on. Can things change? They always can, and each game is different but as of right now I am not optimistic having watched all but the lsu game.
 
1. Clean up the sloppiness on O and have fewer, or equal, turnovers as the other team. Do only that, and we're 0.500 + in conference play, and we make the big dance.

2. More discipline on defense. Stop giving up easy points made by wide open, unchallenged, opposing players.
