Texas Tech - Game 2 — we don’t match up well down low

Today at 11:30am on ABC we have our rematch with Tech at the Frank Erwin Center. Last time, they killed us on turnovers, shooting, rebounding, physical play in the paint, and most other aspects of the game. Look for a hard-fought, physical, and closer game this go round. Play tight D, be tough down low, win the turnover battle, and come away with the W.

Go Horns!

Refs are starting to call some marginal fouls to keep it under control. With this sort of reffing, we need to be good at the free throw line today. We’re up by 1.

Halftime 28-28

Long offensive droughts suck…

Decent job overall. Good shooting by the guards. Playing pretty tough down low—especially Bishop. Disu too. Not much O production at all down low yet. Here’s where we miss Mitchell. Enter Timmy Allen…?

Still. Tied at halftime against a Top 10 team.

After a looooooong O drought, A couple of threes sure helped. Now Bishop hits a FT and we’re only down by 2. Our Inside scoring is all but absent thus far today.

Very even in every stat except 2-pointer FG%. We needed Allen and Bishop to step up and score and they're just not. Tech is playing great D.

Welp that's all she wrote.

1. Whoever ****** up the ticket situation should be fired and burned at the stake. I've never seen it like this before. We've had some years where opponents drop in and make some noise, but nothing like today. They need a complete revamp of how they sell seats for Moody, and make sure it's not some dumbass code that trolls can find.

2. Timmy Allen needs to work on his strength and shot. I think the KU game went to his head and he looked lost today.

3. Carr sucked. Again. Worse than the Baylor game.

4. Jones was the only thing keeping us in it, but we played from behind for most of the afternoon.

Tough loss to a 3 seed. O production from our big men was the missing link. Real anemic offense down low today. Absent a collapse, we’re looking like a 4-5 seed.

Williams and Santos are both big, strong, and good defenders—and tenacious rebounders. We just don’t match up well against them down low. Allen is used to being able to muscle his way around down low. So is Bishop. Not against these guys. Tech is the team I would least like to face in the conference tourney. Baylor is no longer near full strength.

I don't buy the ticket "mistake". I mean, who in the ticket office at UT has email addresses to Tech? An address which just so happens to notify the Tech student body. Makes no sense. Sounds like shenanigans to me from Tech alum / bigwigs - just a conspiracy theory, a la Rick Perry, etc pulling things on Texas. Whatever it was, it was embarrassing.

That's the game right there. tech just has too much of a size and athleticism advantage on the inside. The outside shooting has to be great to overcome that and obviously it wasn't. I think Carr was 0-7 from 3. W/O Jones we get killed.

I actually thought Allen and Brockingham did pretty good considering they're giving up about 4" to the players they were going against.

Canzez and Bailor are both better matchups for Texas despite the rankings.

Does anybody remember the TV stat of points in the paint? Don't think I've ever seen one that bad at any level.

We needed Disu to contribute especially with Mitchell’s absence.

He only played 4 minutes when we need him to help in the paint.

Is Mitchell going to miss the dance?

Didn't watch but shocked we didn't lose by more, so considering this team's limitations, I guess we did the best we could.
28.3 FG percentage - this was actually a winnable game if we shot better. Even the announcers said they were surprised how many open looks Texas had. We don’t have consistent shooters and don’t have big men to control the paint. Not a good recipe for winning big games.

In the end, we lost the game at the FT line.

We were outscored by 7 in FT’s, TTU WAS 20 of 29 and had 20 PFs.

We were 13 of 17 with 21 PFs.

Based on PFs by each team, total FTs should have be closer.

I agree that it was a winnable game. Shooting 35% (not impossible) would have won. We don’t match up that we’ll against ttu.
But this team has won some big games already. And could win some more. Or not. I think that’s why they play the games.
This team is not as strong and athletic in the post as last year’s team. And it would be nice to have a clutch point guard like Matt Coleman.
The team is still coming together. Hopefully, Disu gets healthier and stronger by the Dance.

Think of all the big men Shaka wasted, year after year. NBA talent and this season, none.
Why did Baker (Westlake?) leave? Would’ve added depth at least.

The best players are still Shaka's players. Beard did a good job filling the roster from nothing, but he has to improve the athletic level of the team in the next few years to make them competitive for a Big12 title.
