Texas State-Army and Other Scores

An excellent game so far that is now in the bottom of the fourth. The Bobcats jumped to a 2-0 lead but Army trimmed the deficit to a single run with a solo shot in the bottom of the third--the Black Knights' only hit of the game so far.

At the moment, USMA is threatening with two on.

As I typed that post, a would-be double play turns sour for Texas State after an errant throw to first. Army plates a run to knot the score at 2-2 and now has a runner in scoring position with two outs.

Elsewhere, Kansas is destroying Dartmouth, 10-0, in the bottom of the fifth. KU's Shaeffer Hall had a perfect game through 4 and two-thirds innings but just allowed a two-out single.

Texas State (almost said Southwest Texas State!) jumps back in front in the top of the sixth. The Bobcats got a one-out triple and were able to score when the Army pitcher snagged a lineout and tried to double up the runner at third but threw high and wide.

TXST takes a 3-2 lead in the top of the 6th inning.

So far, there have been a lot of missed opportunities as both teams have left a lot of runners on base.

Army threatening in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles and only one out. Bobcats are yanking Borski, who had allowed just two hits before the seventh, and bringing in Lance Loftin.

Wonder if the Texas State pen can accomplish today what it failed miserably at yesterday.

UPDATE: Army tries to steal third on a passed ball but it doesn't roll very far and the catcher makes a nice throw for an easy out at third. Texas State then gets out of the inning when Army hits a slow roller to first. The pitcher covers the bag just in time for out No.3.

Elsewhere, Kansas has nearly finished its demolition of Dartmouth. The Jayhawks lead, 16-0, in the top of the ninth. Hall has allowed three hits through eight innings with six Ks and no walks.

Mizzou off to a better start today than yesterday. The Tigers lead Monmouth, 2-0, in the top of the fifth. Guess today is the day for the Big 12 North to beat up on the "mouths" of the East.

Also, aggy continues to be aggy. They already trail mighty Wright State, 2-0, after one inning of play. I guess Ross Hales isn't the second coming of baby Jesus, after all.

Didn't aggy take four from Wright State during the regular season? Man, that squad has really spiraled.

The Kansas game is official: 16-0 victory and a complete game, five-hit effort from Hall.

Mizzou now up 4-0 over Monmouth; still in the fifth. Bases are loaded and no outs (according to GameTracker).

Army again threatening. Trailing Texas State, 4-2, the Black Knights have a man on second with no outs in the bottom of the eighth.

Opposite-field single plates a run for Army. No outs, a runner on first. Score is now 4-3, Bobcats.

After an out, grounder squirts through the infield to left and puts two on for the Black Knights.

Loftin loads the bases with a four-pitch walk. Man, this Texas State pen is disgusting. Still one out.

Loftin being yanked. New Bobcat pitcher is Tyler Brundridge.

Big swing and miss for strike three. Bases still juiced, now two outs for Army.

Check that--guess he fouled that off. Next pitch is a ball, which means Texas State walks in the tying run. Score is 4-4, bases loaded, one out.

Sac fly to left scores the go-ahead run. Army leads for the first time today, 5-4. Runners on first and second with two outs.

Error by the second baseman loads the pads for the Black Knights once more. Still two away.

Bloop single to center scores two. Army leads, 7-4, with runners at the corners.

Grounder to third ends the inning, a five-run nightmare for the Bobcats.

This Texas State bullpen should hang its head in shame.

Top of the ninth, McKague in to close for Army. Unless it can come up with three runs, Texas State is down to its final three outs of the game, the regional and its season.

On the bright side for the Bobcats, Goldschmidt is on deck.

Leadoff walk puts Atwood on first. Goldschmidt up.

Goldschmidt goes yard ... but foul. Count is 1-2.

Goldschmidt grounds into a fielder's choice. Runner at second is out, but Goldschmidt just beats the throw to first.

Another fielder's choice puts Prestridge on at first and Goldsmith out at second. The Bobcats are down to the final out.

Roller to short ends the inning, the game and the tournament for Texas State.

Hate to keep harping on it, but that Bobcat bullpen is pathetic ... absolutely pathetic. After blowing a 5-2 lead in the top of the ninth yesterday, they spoil a 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the eighth today for an encore. Disgusting.

Kudos to Army for battling. Not a particularly clean game (six errors combined), but nevertheless a very entertaining one.

Elsewhere, Missouri boasts a 5-0 lead over Monmouth in the top of the seventh.

In its match with Wright State, aggy briefly tied the game in the top of the third, but WSU answered in the bottom of the inning with a run and now leads, 3-2.
