Texas Squeezes Life From Opponents

I found this story on the Horns on a Mississippi web site. I love the line that says that if there is any team that knows how to slowly squeeze the life from opponents, its Texas. Also enjoyed the quote from the Baylor coach who said that Texas waits for you to screw up.

Obviously if we get our lead runner on it makes all the difference in the world. Game one against TCU had to be extremely frustrating for them.

"Garrido has been known as a thinking man's coach during his 41 years in the game, one who focuses on the mental aspect of nearly as much as the physical."
This is a great article about the Texas baseball philosophy and program. Enjoyed reading it.
This is the kind of basball I like, the kind played by my favorite team as a kid, the L.A. Dodgers, with Maury Wills walking, stealing bases, advancing on bunts, and scoring on a sac fly, then watching Koufax, Drysdale, Perinoski and Miller completely shut down the other teams.
Then at UT, Coach Gus played baseball chess, with hitters taking pitches, walking much more than the current team, inducing opposing pitchers to balk, getting in intentional rundowns, and trotting out one great pitcher after another.
Now we are treated to Augieball, another version of "small ball," relying heavily on the bunt, the suicide squeeze, solid fundamental defense, and of course, great pitching.
I love seeing baseball won this way. You can have your steroided-up over-egoed bashers, I'll take small ball any day of the week.

Great read. Thanks for posting it.

Now, beat their asses!

Very good article - but I have a feeling people will be surprised when Texas puts up bigger than expected numbers in Omaha. Typically from what I remember, the offense usually performs well up there.

The newspaper article is incorrect. The article says Texas leads the nation in ERA. However, according the the NCAA web site, ASU (2.78) leads the nation in ERA. Texas is second (2.84).
