Texas: simple to plan defense against

I've got to think Texas is probably one of the easiest teams in the country to plan a defense against. OK, I'm sure this has already been discussed ad infinitum, but I haven't been doing it so here goes:

I guess what I am suggesting is closest to a 2-3 zone, but it would emphasize doubling Abrams on the outside and Pittman on the inside. Damion James is the only other player you even need a hand in the face when jump shooting, so all defenders that don't have a current responsibility of denying Pittman the ball sag in the lane and block penetration or inside passing.

You deny Pittman the ball by fronting him, and you are also quick to come with the double behind him to prevent passes coming over the top.

At the top you dog Abrams and come from behind screens with another player to always maintain a hand in his face. You let Mason and Balbay dribble around just denying penetration.

With this defense you can always have 3 or 4 players sagging into the lane to clog up everying.

On offense, you get play up tempo and launch 3's whenever you have a good shot. If you can make even a few 3's it spells victory over Texas, because we can't score enough to overcome it. With the up tempo play you also try to get Pittman tired, because once he is tired, his offense weakens quite a bit, and he is prone to foul on defense.

This team would be completely transformed if we had one more GOOD outside shooter.

Barnes has done a fantastic job at Texas, no question. That is not to say there is not plenty of room for improvement. I think it is easier to teach a good shooter defense than it is to take a bad shooter and try to make him an offensive threat. Hopefully, we will start to occasionally recruit someone that has a knock down jumper for a change. We need at least 2 people capable of shooting a jump shot at a time, Rick!

We do have other players "capable" of stepping up and draining 3's. The frustrating thing is they are not doing so. I think that if they do we have no problem getting the ball to Sexy Dexy. But dag nabbit, they are not making their shots. ****, even 12 foot jumpers are not going in with regularity.

Dammit, I am nervous already.

Dogus and Justin only shoot when they drive. A team would be crazy to guard them up close on the perimeter. Best defense against them is to eliminate penetration and dare them to shoot a jumper.

I forget which game it was during the B12 tourney (maybe K-State), but at one point, AJ drove the baseline and passed the ball to Dogus, who was just outside the lane near the baseline. He did not shoot the ball. I can understand why he doesn't shoot from 18-20 ft, but from inside of 10 ft when he has a wide open look?

He doesn't even think about shooting, unless he's driving to the hole. Justin is almost the same way.

As for guarding AJ, I don't really think you need to double him. A tall guard with quick feet who can fight through screens has proven to be effective. A box and 1 would work for that.

I didn't say he could shoot well. I merely said he has the ability.

It is not that simple. Dexter and AJ are certainly our greatest scoring threats... but if other teams place their primary focus on just these two players, we are in good shape.

Keep in mind, earlier this season teams guarded AJ closely and Dexter hadn't evolved into the threat he is today. We still managed to rack up some major wins. Heck... we didn't even have a competent PG at the time (let's be honest, Dogus was an attrocity in his first 10 games).

The fact is we have some great players other than Pittman and Abrams. Both James and Johnson can take over a game, especially if the focus isn't on them. Mason and Balbay will find a way scrap up some points - maybe 12 to 14 between the two of them. Ward may contribute another 4 or so. Atchley will add another 4 to 7 pts... and Chapman will give you a few as well.

We may lose. We may win. What I do know is that several players on this team beyond Abrams and Pittman have the ability to take over a game.

Problem:

AJ can't make his own shot at all and requires alot of leg work and screening to get shape, quick release or not.

Dogus cannot and so does not shoot.

Mason has ghosted.

Atchley has Ghosted.

The Horns are not a great perimeter threat and their inside game is going to be hampered by any team that has some athleticism in the front court as any team that doesn't sag is insane.

This version is the definition of a flawed squad.

I'm not suggesting a true double team on AJ, but more a switch alternating with the 2 up defenders on either side of the screen with the other re-sagging. Basically always keeping good length and a hand up in front of AJ. If you have the right speed athletic defender guard that can fight through screens well, you can probably just man him on AJ, double Pittman and sag in the lane with the rest.

In defense of AJ creating his own shot, while not great at it he is probably not nearly as bad as he seems, given the kind of dedicated defense that is aligned against him.

No, Dogus can shoot, he just does not or does not have the confidence he needs. But he can shoot. I know this for fact. When he finally starts it could be a great thing. I don't know why he does not and I have not asked him. I will though but then it will maybe be too late.

No, Dogus can't shoot, yet. He may find the ability next year, but shooting as poorly as he does from the free throw line tells you what you need to know about his capability to hit an outside shot. Loop, he could stand in front of you or me and drain 20 3's in a row in agame of horse, but unfortunately that doesn't equate to the ability to hit those shots in a game.

It's not a confidence issue.
