I find it very interesting that Texas is higher than both Michigan and Ohio considering all that gone on up there the last few years during this recession. Texas is higher than all of the states that were most affected by the mortgage/real estate downturn since 08.

Is Rick Perry really the person that voters see as the answer to the recession we are currently in?

read up on the word colonia. let them live here in USA poverty, aka Mexican average, or push them back to mexico in worse poverty x 4.

I wish it was regulated more but till it is you can't blame the schools or the social programs for being over burdened by the mass of people from the South.

I love statistics and how they can be manipulated.

If you take the Democratic cornerstones of this state out of that equation: Bexas County, Dallas County, Harris County, and El Paso County what does that statisitic look like?

I wonder why all the Democratic strongholds are the poorest areas in the state and have been for years? Maybe it is time for Change in the political climate in those poverty areas, they can't keep voting for the same old mangy dog year after year!!! Maybe they should try something different?

MichTex,

MAny people think CA should be more like Texas if they want to get out of their funk. Are you suggesting Texas spend money like CA? I hope not.

Mich:

Thanks for proving my point, of the Democratic counties I listed, the Republican counterparts Denton, Collin, Rockwall Williamson and Fort Bend counties are the lowest for poverty in the state.

Thanks buddy!!!!! I love when we can all agree!!!!!

Who here took a statistics class? Amazing how you can make them fit any argument you like!!!!!

I love how on the very same website, CNNMoney, there is a cost of living calculator:The Link
If my family of 4 living "in poverty" in Dallas, TX (making $22,113 per yer) moves to Los Angeles, they would need an income of $32,808
in order to enjoy the same standard of living! Even if they were to move to a lower cost city in CA, say Fresno, they would still have to pull in $28,255 to be comparable.

IMO, these poverty statistics are TOTAL GARBAGE, and it's a rotten shame that no one in the media bothers to question the methodology. "Oh it's from the government so we must just go ahead and assume it's the golden truth."

If that is how they calculate statistical poverty then the % is a farce. Due to cost of living being lower in the South, wages will as a result be less than in CA and the North. Maybe they should use some kind of % of median income or calculate buying power. That would make more sense.

Having 6 of the top 20 largest cities in the country might contribute to this phenomena. Urban areas tend to have more poverty. And larger urban areas tend to have larger amounts of poverty...

Then, you add in the large legal AND illegal immigrant population and the number of people who are around poverty are higher...

However, being at the federal poverty level in Laredo is much different than being at the federal poverty level in San Diego...

Well Ag perhaps many of these people have moved towards Urban areas b/c of the lack of prosperity in the rural areas. we can play these games and make up reasons but the #s remain what they are. Texas has a very big divide in terms of the wealthy and the poverty stricken. We are very low in terms of unemployment and insured and this is a driver.

The poverty areas are driven by Democrats, it might be time that those people make a change. They have been fooled by the same people for 10-20-30 years, sounds like it might be time to look at alternatives because the status quo is not working.

The poverty areas are dem because poor people will vote for people who try to help them. People who are not poor vote for people who don't want the government to spend money helping others.

How hard is that to understand?
'
River Oaks is not prosperous because its denizens vote republican. They vote republican because they are prosperous. If there was a lot of unemployment and poverty there they would all be dems.

Poor areas are not poor because dems govern, the dems govern because the poor trust them more than the nice republicans.

It has been like this forever.

If inner cities elected republican mayors they would have lower taxes, less services but just as much poverty, it would just be a little more difficult to endure.

Maybe if they had lower corporate tax rates, better jobs would come into the community and possibly money would be allocated to clean up neighborhoods and improve schools.

Schools in Republican areas are much better then ones in Democratic areas. Maybe instead of Dallas ISD higher from other Democratic areas, like Atlanta, they should hire from Plano or Lewisville? Maybe that will help them get their corruption under control......If the poverty and education levels are getting worse, that is a big signal that the current leaders are not doing a good job and it might be time for a change!!!

I know if there are problems in Denton county we make changes real fast, might be time for these poverty striken areas to make major leadership changes.

Just trying to help, the current leadership is not doing anything to help.
