OSU is on a four game losing streak which started with a 91-74 home loss to Texas. The last two games have been close losses to Baylor (64-62) at home and to KSU (79-77)on the road. Now they come to Austin to try to snap the Longhorns’ five game Big 12 winning streak. Texas, meanwhile, is 4-1 at home and will be looking for their third straight home win. The Horns are 7-3 in Big 12 play and will be looking to keep pace with KSU, also 7-3, who will be playing at Missouri.
In the first game, the Horns took the Cowgirls apart by hitting 13-23 3s, including 10-13 in the first half. Riley went off for 26 pts but was 10-30 from the field, including 1-11 from BTA. The Horns countered with four players in double digits. OSU was 5-27 from BTA with only Kristen Hernandez (2-5) managing to connect on more than one 3.
OSU is led in Big 12 games by Andrea Riley (# 10, 5-5 Jr. G) at 26.9 ppg. Tegan Cunningham (# 1, 6-1 Jr.F), Taylor Hardeman (# 13, 5-10 Sr. G) and Shaunté Smith (# 32, 6-0 Sr. F) join Riley as starters for all ten Big 12 games. Megan Byford (# 33, 6-2 Jr. C) and Shyvon Spears (# 40, 6-1 Sr. F)have split starts at the other position with Byford starting the last four games. Those six along with Kristin Hernandez (# 5, 5-9 Soph. G) are the players that are averaging in double digit minutes. Melinda Mercado (# 15, 5-10 Fr. G), from Earnie’s old high school of Salpulpa, OK, plays around eight minutes a game and rounds out OSU’s main rotation. Riley and Hardeman are among the better 3pt shooters in the league. Riley is averaging 2.2 3pters per game on 27.5% from BTA while Hardeman is making 1.7 3s a game on 31.5% shooting from BTA. Hernandez brings 1.2 3s a game to the mix.
Smith (8.4 rpg) and Spears (6.8 rpg)rank 6th and 12th in the league, respectively. Riley and Hardeman are tied for 10th in the league with 1.7 steals a game each. Riley and Smith are first and eighth in the league in minutes played at 38.6 and 35.3 minutes apiece. Riley is third in the league with 5.2 apg and third with a A/TO ratio of 1.53.
To understand how important Riley is to OSU, her 26.9 ppg average is 41% of the ppg that OSU scores. She averages 5.2 apg. That’s a minimum of another 10.4 ppg that she’s directly responsible for. That’s 37.3 ppg or 57% of OSU’s Big 12 scoring total. It seems pretty simple. Shut down Riley and you shut down OSU. It’s not that easy as teams have found out. But she can be frustrated as she was in the last game between the two. Ashleigh did a great job on her with help from other Texas defenders. When Riley’s teammates are hitting the open shot (if Riley is doubled), then it really becomes difficult to stop OSU, because Riley can find the open player. That’s what was so important about Ashleigh being able to stay on Riley without help most of the time.
Texas is led by Kat and Brit with 12.3 and 11.5 ppg, respectively. Kat’s 6.8 rpg lead the Horns in Big 12 play. Kat also ranks 9th in the league with an 81.6 FT % on 31-38 FTs. She is sixth in the league with a 37.5 3pt %. Her 1.8 3s per game is fifth in the league. Brit is 14th (tied with OSU’s Hernandez) with an average of 1.2 3s per game.
Carla leads the Horns with 49 assists (4.9 apg), 4th in the league. Her A/TO ratio of 1.63 tops the Big 12. Ashleigh is fifth in the league with 20 steals (2 spg). That number tops the Horns. Lindsey tops the Horns with 2.2 bpg (5th in the league) while Gayle is second at 1.4 bpg (7th in the Big 12).

Everyone was expecting a close game in the first matchup. But the Horns’ shooting from BTA changed that. In addition, the defense by the Horns kept OSU from finding open shooters and frustrated Riley. Having Ashleigh on Riley allowed Brit to stay on the Cowgirls second best scorer on the perimeter and helped to shut down their perimeter scoring. The Horns’ ability to have multiple players hitting from outside allowed Lindsey and Gayle to operate inside. They ended up 5-10 on FGs in addition to getting six blocks. The Horns had four players hit at least 50% from behind the arc, including Ashleigh’s 3-3. OSU will have to make some adjustments to counter the pressure that Riley will face and to keep the Horns from getting such open looks. OSU took 72 shots to the Horns 59. Riley took 30 shots. No other OSU player took more than nine shots. It will be interesting to see what adjustments both coaches make although one would guess that OSU will make more than Coach G.

What has to be frustrating to coaches and players is the decrease in the FT% in Big 12 play, down to 66% from the season average of 72.1%. The Horns are first in FT% for the season but only ninth in Big 12 play. If the Horns can hit their shots and clamp down defensively on Riley, Hardeman and Hernandez on the perimeter, the Horns will be looking at six wins in a row. Riley, of course, will need to be locked down all over the court.
