OSU is on a four game losing streak which started with a 91-74 home loss to Texas. The last two games have been close losses to Baylor (64-62) at home and to KSU (79-77)on the road. Now they come to Austin to try to snap the Longhorns’ five game Big 12 winning streak. Texas, meanwhile, is 4-1 at home and will be looking for their third straight home win. The Horns are 7-3 in Big 12 play and will be looking to keep pace with KSU, also 7-3, who will be playing at Missouri.

In the first game, the Horns took the Cowgirls apart by hitting 13-23 3s, including 10-13 in the first half. Riley went off for 26 pts but was 10-30 from the field, including 1-11 from BTA. The Horns countered with four players in double digits. OSU was 5-27 from BTA with only Kristen Hernandez (2-5) managing to connect on more than one 3.

OSU is led in Big 12 games by Andrea Riley (# 10, 5-5 Jr. G) at 26.9 ppg. Tegan Cunningham (# 1, 6-1 Jr.F), Taylor Hardeman (# 13, 5-10 Sr. G) and Shaunté Smith (# 32, 6-0 Sr. F) join Riley as starters for all ten Big 12 games. Megan Byford (# 33, 6-2 Jr. C) and Shyvon Spears (# 40, 6-1 Sr. F)have split starts at the other position with Byford starting the last four games. Those six along with Kristin Hernandez (# 5, 5-9 Soph. G) are the players that are averaging in double digit minutes. Melinda Mercado (# 15, 5-10 Fr. G), from Earnie’s old high school of Salpulpa, OK, plays around eight minutes a game and rounds out OSU’s main rotation. Riley and Hardeman are among the better 3pt shooters in the league. Riley is averaging 2.2 3pters per game on 27.5% from BTA while Hardeman is making 1.7 3s a game on 31.5% shooting from BTA. Hernandez brings 1.2 3s a game to the mix.

Smith (8.4 rpg) and Spears (6.8 rpg)rank 6th and 12th in the league, respectively. Riley and Hardeman are tied for 10th in the league with 1.7 steals a game each. Riley and Smith are first and eighth in the league in minutes played at 38.6 and 35.3 minutes apiece. Riley is third in the league with 5.2 apg and third with a A/TO ratio of 1.53.

To understand how important Riley is to OSU, her 26.9 ppg average is 41% of the ppg that OSU scores. She averages 5.2 apg. That’s a minimum of another 10.4 ppg that she’s directly responsible for. That’s 37.3 ppg or 57% of OSU’s Big 12 scoring total. It seems pretty simple. Shut down Riley and you shut down OSU. It’s not that easy as teams have found out. But she can be frustrated as she was in the last game between the two. Ashleigh did a great job on her with help from other Texas defenders. When Riley’s teammates are hitting the open shot (if Riley is doubled), then it really becomes difficult to stop OSU, because Riley can find the open player. That’s what was so important about Ashleigh being able to stay on Riley without help most of the time.

Texas is led by Kat and Brit with 12.3 and 11.5 ppg, respectively. Kat’s 6.8 rpg lead the Horns in Big 12 play. Kat also ranks 9th in the league with an 81.6 FT % on 31-38 FTs. She is sixth in the league with a 37.5 3pt %. Her 1.8 3s per game is fifth in the league. Brit is 14th (tied with OSU’s Hernandez) with an average of 1.2 3s per game.

Carla leads the Horns with 49 assists (4.9 apg), 4th in the league. Her A/TO ratio of 1.63 tops the Big 12. Ashleigh is fifth in the league with 20 steals (2 spg). That number tops the Horns. Lindsey tops the Horns with 2.2 bpg (5th in the league) while Gayle is second at 1.4 bpg (7th in the Big 12).

Everyone was expecting a close game in the first matchup. But the Horns’ shooting from BTA changed that. In addition, the defense by the Horns kept OSU from finding open shooters and frustrated Riley. Having Ashleigh on Riley allowed Brit to stay on the Cowgirls second best scorer on the perimeter and helped to shut down their perimeter scoring. The Horns’ ability to have multiple players hitting from outside allowed Lindsey and Gayle to operate inside. They ended up 5-10 on FGs in addition to getting six blocks. The Horns had four players hit at least 50% from behind the arc, including Ashleigh’s 3-3. OSU will have to make some adjustments to counter the pressure that Riley will face and to keep the Horns from getting such open looks. OSU took 72 shots to the Horns 59. Riley took 30 shots. No other OSU player took more than nine shots. It will be interesting to see what adjustments both coaches make although one would guess that OSU will make more than Coach G.

What has to be frustrating to coaches and players is the decrease in the FT% in Big 12 play, down to 66% from the season average of 72.1%. The Horns are first in FT% for the season but only ninth in Big 12 play. If the Horns can hit their shots and clamp down defensively on Riley, Hardeman and Hernandez on the perimeter, the Horns will be looking at six wins in a row. Riley, of course, will need to be locked down all over the court.

Previews are not yet available for either texassports or the OSU website. I’ll add them when they come up, probably tomorrow evening.

BAB, thanks again for excellent info...

I was told you only need the coupon to get the crocs, not the wristband, but the wristband is cool, so wearing it will be a good idea anyway!!

GO HORNS!!! ROPE them Cowgirls, and especially
"Shut down Sluggo"

We may need to take up a collection to buy GG a wig...she may not have any hair left after this season. This was a golden opportunity missed. We need those home game Ws.

GOLDEN opportunity

with K-State losing, we had the chance to be alone in 3rd place. now it's a freaking 4-way tie for 3rd.

I like Coach G and remain delighted that we have her here. This is not meant as a criticism but rather an honest question because I am perplexed.

We haven't had any success with an inside game and by inside (I may be using the wrong term) I mean coming down the court and throwing the ball into Lindsey. Granted Lindsey had a great game tonight but that has not been our strength. In fact, we beat OK State on their court almost entirely with an outside game. So why did our main strategy tonight seem to be coming down the court and lobbing the ball into the paint in hopes of a basket??? It made no sense. And if that was our stragey why didn't it change at the half when it was clearly not working? Kat has 2 points? Carla has 4 points??? Brittney has 5 points???? Thank God for EA but even there we weren't getting her clear shots from the outside.

Was this our strategy? I remain very confused at this loss?

We are just not good at a slow paced half-court game. OSU stepped up their D on our outside shooters...left us with no choice but to try the inside game, which didn't work either....

I absolutely HATE this!!!!

We just looked completely lost on offense tonight. Several times I saw the girls looking at each other like what are we suppose to do next. Very disappointing after having such a great game on Sunday. Also, can someone please explain to me the logic of allowing AR to sit out past half court setting up her shot UNCHALLENGED? When we finally started coming out on her then we seemed to disrupt the play or at least make them work for it.

They completely took us out of our game and we could not adjust and get into any kind of offensive rhythm. It happens, it was not pretty. Bad bad bad loss, like the Tech loss, should not have happened, but that's the way it is with a team with an inconsistent offense. Gotta get back in the saddle and get ready for a wild ride at A&M on Sat! Hope they respond in a positive way, or Sat. could get ugly!

No doubt, Earnie did not have a good game and made several mistakes. But the whole offense seemed out of sync - which was OSU game plan, executed to perfection.

What happened to A-Font's offense? She's been missing the last couple of games. A-Font get your head in the game and look for your shot and shoot the ball.

CARLA SHOOT THE BALL!!! Carla start looking for your shot when Raven and Kat are having off nights. For that matter, Carla you have the green light to shoot the ball. It's the end of the season and we need to win games. If that means you taking over - TAKE OVER!

Brit - get it together. You're a Jr. now and we need your CONSISTENT offense. No more excuses.

Earth to Kat.

Gayle - you have one on one sessions w/ DeMoss until you master three post moves.

We have a game Saturday. Time to turn in your ipods, cell phones, car keys, laptops (except for home work), tv remote controls - whatever it takes to get your head in the game.

OK - we still love you and know you can do it. But it's time for some tough love to get you going in the right direction.

HOOK'EM HORNS!!!!

Simply put, we don't play a slow-down, half-court offense worth a damn. This team seems to perform at a much higher level when given a game plan that lets them run.

Defensively, I have to question where the focus was. Too many times, they let the thug get away with her fake 'looking for direction' from Kurt and then after being lulled to sleep, OSU got the easy drive from half-court.

The effort I saw last night does not bode well for getting Thursday off at the tournament. They need to find the will to win that existed during the five-game winning streak.

OSU wonderful game plan. And once we seen their game plan we did not adjust well to it at all. We should have been attacking AR in order to get her out of the game. The offense for us looks a mess. And if I see them feature Brittany one more time as the Star player for Texas I am going to pull my own hair out. She is not the star player for Texas. She is too scare to even drive inside. Which her outside shoot is not working. So why keep shooting instead of going inside at least you have a chance of getting foul and going to the line if she can make that. I am very disappointed in the veterans on our team. And lack of leadership to me also.Taylor Hill please come to Texas.

Would someone please remind me...was it Sluggo Riley who took Brit down last night? All I can see when I look at Sluggo Riley is RED, so maybe I was just imagining it, since she's oh-so-good at knocking people silly.

As I recall, there was a mass of people sort of tumbling...like a bowling ball into pins, with Brit at in the wrong place at the wrong time. I believe that was the same play where the foul was on the floor before the shot but they gave the thug two shots anyhow...

I was at the game and watched Sluggo hit Brittney upside the head. Plain and simple. That, however, is not my excuse for the loss. It is just my observation that Riley gets away with a lot more than she should. Kind of the way C. Paris gets to use her stomach to knock people over without worry because everyone knows a ref won't call a foul a good gut check.

Not sure if we are talking about the same play or not, but from what I saw on TV (I was sick and couldn't make it to the game) I did not see anything malicious from either party. Raven was guarding Riley fairly closely and they bumped. Raven fell backward and took a knee to the head from one of our own players (Anderson I think).

The announcers on the radio said B-Rave got an elbow to the nose from Sluggo.....I didn't see it, but....she was called a short time later for shoving someone else....I HATE that we lost to her and her team...anyone but her/them.

RIght. Not the play where Raven was knocked to the ground. She took one to the head and it was obvious that Riley did it intentionally. A few plays later Riley even more obviously shoved a player and got called. Typical Riley. Which is why she has to sit out the first game of the NCAA tourney if they make it... their win against us makes that possible.

I have the game on tape and the play where Brit got kicked in the head was where Riley bumped her while driving to the bucket, Brit fell backwards to the floor, and then Yvonne accidentally tripped over Brit and she is the one who accidentially kicked her in the head. This is the play at the 4:58 mark where Gail and the trainer came out to see about Brit and she went to the bench for a while. Riley may have elbowed her in the nose on another play, but it wasn't the one where Brit lay on the floor, obviously in pain.

just my thoughts here....

we played TERRIBLE last night....got beat...deserved it. what goes around comes around for AR and OSU (should they get to the ncaa tourney).

I'm sure Coaches and the ladies have already moved ahead to A&M saturday morning....let's do the same.
