Nebraska comes to Austin with an overall record of 9-5 and 0-1 in conference after losing to OU at Lincoln, 77-55. Texas, meanwhile, returns to the friendly confines of the FEC after dropping a 65-62 game in Lubbock to Tech. Texas looks to extend a seven game winning streak at home this season after dropping their last three road games. The Huskers are 2-3 on the road this season.

Looking strictly at Big 12 stats, Neb was led by
Dominique Kelley(#24, 5-7 Soph. G)with 12 pts while Yvonne Turner(#22, 5-8 Jr. G) and Cory Montgomery (#40, 6-2 Jr. F)each had 9 pts. Cathryn Redmon(#44, 6-3 Soph. C) and Kaitlyn Burke (#5, 5-7 Soph. G)added 8 pts apiece. Redmon led on the boards with 9. Turner had 3 steals to lead in that category. Kelley had 4 assists. She also was 5-8 from the field while Montgomery made 4-13 and Redmon had 4-12 FGs. Ten players played for Nebraska with nine of them registering double digit minutes.

For the season, Montgomery (13.1 ppg), Turner (11.0 ppg) and Kelley (10.6 ppg)lead the Huskers in scoring. Those three have started all 14 games in the season. Turner is the top ball thief with 33 (2.4 spg). Kelley averages 3.3 assists per game. Montgomery is the top rebounder with 7.6 a game. Turner (24-79, 30.4%) is the top 3pt threat for Nebraska. Against OU, she was one of six from BTA.

Brit and Kat led the way against Tech with 21 and 20 pts. Both were sharp from BTA, hitting 3-7 (42.8%) and 4-9 (44.4%) respectively. Not only were they the top scorers, they were the top rebounders with 8 and 14 rebounds, respectively. Both also played 36 minutes in the game. Carla had 8 assists & 3 steals. Kat and Ashleigh each got 2 steals apiece. Kat also had 2 blocks.

Brit (15.3 ppg) and Kat (13.8 ppg)are the leading scorers for the season. Erika is third at 9.5 ppg. The Horns have seven players with double digit steals, ranging from Ashleigh’s 14 to 21 for both Lindsey and Carla. Lindsey tops the team with 37 blocks with AG having 34 and Kat third with 11. Our guards are doing a very good job distributing the ball with Carla averaging 5.7 per game. Ashleigh, Brittainey, and Yvonne all have at least 24 assists in 15 games. Kat is the top rebounder at 6.7 rpg, with Earnie (5.2 rpg) and Lindsey (4.9 rpg) second and third. Kat is the first Horn to have grabbed a 100 rebounds this season, actually 101 total. Kat and Brit are the top Horns at getting to the FT line, having taken 63 and 61 respectively. Carla with 37 FTs attempted, is third. Kat’s 87.3% from the FT is second only to her sister Kristen’s 95.2% on 20-21. Three other Horns beside the Nash sisters are averaging over 80% as the team is making 75.2% of their FTs for the season. Erika (27-69, 39.1%), Kat (24-64, 37.5%), and Brit (20-44, 45.5%) are the top 3 pt threats for the Horns. Earnie (6-13, 46.2%), Carla (7-16, 43.8%) and Yvonne (4-13, 30.8%) are the other Horns that have double digit 3pt attempts.

The Horns are averaging 78.0 ppg while holding opponents to 53.9 ppg. They are forcing 19.8 TOs while committing 17.1 TOs. They are outrebounding opponents by 10.6 rebs (43.9 to 33.3). As a team, the Horns are shooting well, connecting on 46.4% of FGs (422-909) and 39.5% of 3s (90-228). As an aside, Erika, Kat and Brit have taken 78% of the team’s 3s. All 11 players are averaging between 11 and 25 minutes when they get in. Ten of the players have gotten into every game they have been available for. Both Earnie and AG have missed one game due to injury.

As with the Tech game, the season stats indicate that Texas should blow out Nebraska. The conference stats indicate a close game. My feeling is that Texas will play closer to their potential and win going away. While both teams are weak offensively in the post, Texas has a much stronger defensive presence with Lindsey and Gayle. Nebraska will need to shut down Brit and Kat both from BTA and when they drive inside. Erika has had good and bad shooting games and is due for a good. That will really open things up inside for both Ashleys. The Horns need to exert dominance on the boards and in forcing TOs.

This is likely the last writeup I will do this season due to pressing work and academic tasks that will keep me from doing the research and writeups in a timely manner. I will see some of you at the games and try to check in at Hornsfans as often as time allows.

Statesman article about the Horns trying to get back on track tonight against the Huskers.

we really need to come away with 2 wins in this mini-home stretch against Nebraska and Colorado. after that we start a brutal away-home-away stretch against OU, A&M and Baylor.

let's go Horns!

I think we need to see more of Fontenette. She has the ability to create her own shot and get to the rim...enough of this standing around some of our guards do hoping that their defenders will all of a sudden forget to guard them.

Fontenette definitely showed up tonite!!! on the offensive and defensive end. player of the game, hands down. she moves very well without the ball, especially when AG has the ball in the post. they already read each very well, which is a good sign for the next 3 years.

she is crazy fast, too. she had a couple of fast breaks tonite, where she just blew past the Nebraska players like it was nothing.

BTW....thanks BabHorn for the incredible previews!!

And, how about Fontenette for Freshman of the week???

Great effort last nite. That Fontenette was on fire! She played like a Junior last nite. What got into her.I want more now.Maybe her effort will rub off on some of the veterans, which look like they were scared.Kathleen rocks as always. I love her energy. And Carla was great with the assist.Lets turn up the defense a little more.

Aubry showed some intensity in her handful of minutes...I actually liked the foul she was called for- she could really be a force off the bench if people have to respect her presence on defense.

I also liked how the crowd intensity actually picked up when we started that run at the end of the first half...would be nice if that could be sustained through a game given how the team seems to feed off the crowd.
