Texas is a team playing scared

I grew up a horn fan with both parents and one grandparent as alumnus. I played football in an Earl Campbell uniform. I played HS FB but was too small for the College level and didn’t run a 4.3. My Dad turns 81 next month. We text during every game. The off-season kind of ruined the regular season regardless of record. I still think 8-2 is likely if they stay together as a team. It’s mental now. Move on, have fun. That’s what college football is all about.

Not buying the playing scared angle at all. We've thrown the ball downfield all year. Trouble last week is the announcer said we had 284 yds called back due to penalty in the 1st firggin half. We didn't play scared, we played dumb. Then the dumbest play of all was Ingram's reaching on 1st down. The play calling was all there to win this game. Execution was in the crapper. We lost because we were mentally lazy.

Never heard of LongHorn Bob.

Wow, I guess I am old. I was on LFZ. I still miss El Aitchbee and his pre-game emails.

I think the problem with this team WRT the fans is the opposite of what some of you guys are saying. IMO we are too soft on our team. By my lights, and mind you, I graduated in '86 and have had season tickets since, Longhorn fans are quite patient, to a fault. The old saw that Texas fans think they are entitled to the NC every year is just not true. For sure, we do not hold the administration of UT to the fire as much as we should. Schools like Alabama, Ohio State, and even OU are *much* more focused on winning football championships than UT is, and I am not talking about just the athletic dept, I mean the entire university from the president on down. We just do not have that at UT.

I don't think we're playing scared. Sloppy, absolutely. Dumb, absolutely. On cruise control, possibly. Fearful, no, I don't see that.

Texas isn't nearly the pressure cooker that real football teams are. If Clemson, Alabama, OSU, lost 5 games last year, 4 the year before that, it would have been far more of a storm that at Texas

That's because they are on top right now. After Mack only lost 9 games total in a 6 year span from 2004-2009, going 9-4 and 8-5 was the end of the road for him.

If Alabama replaced Saban with a guy who went 6-7, 5-7, 5-7, then they'd be reacting to 10-4 with a Sugar Bowl win about like we did.

Herman gonna be Herman. He doesnt care about the University. Most of the players dont care about the University.Herbie has an opinion, just like the rest of us. He is no authority. Royal said that Texas is a tough job, because they expect you to win.
My advise to Herman and the players is "If you cant take the heat, get outta the kitchen.
Name me a school where they have a tradition of winning (Alabama, tOSU, ND, Georgia, etc) where the fans don't expect you to win. Without those expectations consistent success is impossible. High expectations and winning history brings fans and players together in many ways. Traditions, energy, momentum, donations to the school and programs, all sorts of ways that make the school and the player's experience better; Enhancing everyone's experience. This could, and should, be a strength and asset to players, coaches and fans.

To minimize the fans has a paradoxical effect of minimizing the team, the sport and the players. It was a serious mistake TH made. He has made a number of mistakes since his arrival. His personality is not good. He is low on interpersonal skills.

He is low on humility. He doesn't get that highly competent, effective people can use humility as a strength. Foolish people see humility as a weakness.
DKR was a humble man, but he was strong, competent, and respectful of fans--whether you were a big donor or not. I wasn't around him much, but when I was he looked me straight in the eye. And didn't seem in a hurry for me to move on.

I don't expect TH to be another DKR. But I would like him to show more respect and understanding of the sacred relationship between the school, the students, the fans and every team that suits up in Burnt Orange and White. I think it would help him become a better coach.

There were multiple reasons we lost to Patterson again. Making stupid mistakes was one of them. To be fair, I thought many of the refs calls were off, but plenty were legitimate.

I believe the playing scared part applies mostly to the defensive side of the ball.. mostly....but I think it is an evident, general vibe around the program and team as a whole....part of their overall "personality " makeup resulting from many things building up within the program the last decade...dont think the kids dont feel it.

Didnt know where to put this. At first, I was surprised and then I started thinking....you know that's right we dont put the ball on the ground much.
The first thing I thought of when KI fumbled was how evident RJs very tight carrying of the ball is and how unfortunate it was he wasnt in the game.
Not to bash KI...he made a mistake...a costly one...but it isnt like he or the team have major issues with this and - at least with this one particular thing- perhaps its unfair to put it in the "poorly coached, undisciplined" cake. ...Perhaps....
What is Texas' problem? Why the Longhorns struggle to get out of their own way

Th appearance is that we dont game-plan for the next opponent during the week. Every game, we walk onto the field with the attitude that was are going to "impose our will" against each new opponent. But each new opponent knows our tendencies, knows our weaknesses and knows how to exploit them against us. This is the 4th year of this same shyte. Thus is why it always looks like we did nothing during summer/fall practices.

In other words, the team has taken on the persona of the HC.

I feel different on the KI fumble. Because it's not like some dude just knocked it out. KI just gave them the ball. It's different when people just don't get the situation. 1st and goal from the 1 you just don't do what he did. VY did it against OU as well. He made up for it the following year. KI needs to make amends starting this week.
