Texas in the running for Jamil Wilson

The new Scout.com affiliate, Burnt Orange Beat, is taking over for Inside Texas, which has moved on to ESPN.

While the staff isn't completely in place yet, it promises to have the very best basketball coverage of anyone out there.

Here's a blurb on Jamil Wilson, a forward out of Wisconsin (the thread title says he's a power forward, but he's actually more of a wing). He came in on an official visit to Texas last weekend, and apparently the visit made an huge impression.

Here's the link ($$$):

You can read any articles in the Scout system, including those published on phog.net.

However, you can't access other teams' premium message boards. For example, I've been a long time subscriber to phog.net's premium services, but I had to sign up as a new subscriber for Burnt Orange Beat to access their premium board. However, any Scout.com premium subscriber can access the national boards, including the premium basketball recruiting board.

I'm in a fortunate position where I can afford to be a member of a multiple number of sites, but I know if I ever am at a point where I have to choose just one, Burnt Orange Beat will be the one I'll choose. They're just getting started, but I know the kind of talent they'll have working there, and no one is going to be able to cover the basketball program and football recruiting as well as them.

I hope that gave you an answer (my "cue" key apparently isn't working, or else I'd type "I hope that helped answer your uestion").

When it comes to scholarship limitations, Barnes always answers, "These things have a way of working themselves out." So that's what I'd go with at this point, linkdapimp.

skymonkeyhorn, supposedly he's been a long time Michigan State lean. There are some Nike ties which makes Oregon a real player, but we'll have to see after the official out to Eugene is done with.

I'm not counting on him, but it is interesting to see Texas being a real possibility at this late date.

I don't think I'm at liberty to say, moosejaw.

I can say Gerry Hamilton announces he's leaving Orangebloods, then Inside Texas moves over to ESPN, opening up a spot in the Scout network for someone to take over the Texas site, seems like an awful lot of coincidences. I can't think of anyone who would be better suited to take over a Longhorn premium site than Gerry Hamilton. Can you?

jimmyjazz, my guess is Maruette saw the writing on the wall, but I don't have any legitimate way of knowing for sure.

But I would tell people to hold off for now. I'm on a 7 day free trial there, and very little is showing up in the way of news articles or even good info on the message boards.

I suspect they are still getting the staff together, but until they do so, it's hardly even worth the visit, much less the $, but that will probably change. The only question is when.

Of course, Orangebloods (Rivals) is in a similar circumstance, having replaced Gerry and having said a "Hoops War Room" would appear late last Friday, then pushed it back "a couple of days," but is still hasn't appeared on the site.

When my 7 day trial runs out, I'll tell everyone what is the extent of coverage there, and maybe someone else can step in to report on their progress.

Obviously I don't know the circumstances but I really wish (and maybe they did) OB would have exhausted every resource they could to keep Gerry. We'll see how the bball coverage recovers b/c I really don't want to subscribe to 2 sites.

Getting back on track with the thread, one of the assistant coaches at UT feels very good about Jamil Wilson as of last week.

I think all of the assistants feel pretty good about getting Jamil Wilson.

Rodney Terry is the actual assistant responsible for Wilson's recruitment, and he feels VERY good, so we'll see. I've seen situations before where an assistant felt really good about the way a recruitment was going --- in football or basketball --- and then it ended up going in a different direction.

The most important opinion to me is Rick Barnes. I think Barnes is completely underrated as a player evaluator. Many of what could be argued were "mistakes" in recruiting, were mistakes made because Barnes didn't get the chance to see the player.

Barnes absolutely loves Jamil Wilson. Unfortunately for Wilson, he suffered some foot injuries prior to the summer, and had a family difficulty to deal with. It hurt his performance over the summer. Barnes doesn't feel that the way Wilson played over the summer is indicative of what kind of player he is. He thinks Wilson is an out and out stud, with exactly the kind of mindset he wants on his team. If you'll remember last year's recruiting class, where Barnes passed on any number of top 100 prospects, he doesn't always feel that way, and rankings don't really matter all that much to him.

I didn't get to see the badass version of Jamil Wilson, but if Barnes has confidence in him, I do, too.

My problem with Wilson is that I'm not excited about another wing, but that's my own problem to deal with if Texas brings in Wilson. As I said somewhere --- maybe on this thread --- it seems like Barnes is trying to make up for the lack of true college wings throughout his tenure at UT by recruiting a whole roster full of them in the 2009 and 2010 classes.

After seeing what happened with Connor Atchley, I'll take any kid Barnes wants to vouch for and not give a damn whether they got 1 star or 5 stars. Also, Wilson is probably one of those guys that will become a part of a solid nucleus that will stick around for 4-5 yrs. We can't over-emphasize the importance of having that core to give us continuity from 1 year to the next.

He's a much higher recruit talent wise than Atchley. He used to be five stars, but he slipped a bunch lately...I believe he actually started at like 7 on Scout.

Any particular reason for the slip? I see SL mentioned the foot injury but it seems strange the the services would drop him down knowing he was dealing with an injury.

btw: I see a couple articles showing he was the 9th rated player in the class. Their description of him still leans on that with several "elite player in this class" references.
