Coming off a disappointing loss to UCLA that marked their first loss of the season, Texas (5-1) looks to rebound against Louisiana-Monroe (ULM) this Tuesday in Austin. This will be the first meeting in a dozen years. From 1980 through 1990, the teams met six times, split evenly with two home games, two away games and two games on a neutral court. Texas won all six. The ULM Warhawks (2-6) are coming into this game after winning Sunday over Southern Miss 73-55.

Jasmine Shaw (# 22, 5-10 Jr. G) and Alexar Tugler (# 12, 5-10 Jr. G) lead the Warhawks in scoring with averages of 11.1 and 10.1 ppg, respectively. Ashleigh Simmons (# 20, 6-1 Jr. F) is third at 9.5 ppg. Those three are the only ones that have taken 45 FG attempts. Shaw is 38-93 (40.9%), A. Tugler is 31-84 (36.9%) and Simmons is 30-68 (44.1%). Alayshia Hunter (# 3, 6-1 Fr. F) leads the team in FG% at 50% (21-42). Three Warhawks have taken 67 of the team’s 84 3pters: A. Tugler (9-30, 30.0%), Shaw (6-21, 28.6%) and Jae Shin (# 10, 5-7 Soph. G; 7-16, 43.8%). A. Tugler has taken the most 3s while Shin has been the most accurate from BTA. Simmons has been the best at getting to the FT line (31 attempts) although she has not taken advantage of that, making only 15 (48.4%). However, she did make four of five in their last game against Southern Miss. Christina Gray (# 32, 5-9 Soph. G) has been the best FT shooter, making 13 of 15 (86.7%). Three others have better FT%s but have not gotten to the FT line much: Shin (8-8, 100%), Shaw (7-9, 77.8%) and Sharnice Brooks (# 34, 6-2 Soph. C; 8-9, 88.9%).

Simmons leads ULM in rebounding at 7.3 rpg. Shaw (5.6 rpg) and Hunter (4.8 rpg) rank second and third in rebounding. ULM has three players that average at least 2.5 apg: A. Tugler (3.6 apg), Elexar Tugler (# 21, 5-9 Jr. G; 3.3 apg) and Shaw (2.5 apg). Hunter’s 8 blocks leads the team with Brooks six second. E. Tugler’s 2.1 steals per game tops ULM in that category.

A. Tugler, E. Tugler, Simmons and Shaw have started all eight games for ULM this season. Gray has five starts, including the last two. Hunter has three starts. Shantrell Pierson (# 11, 5-8 Jr. G) and Brooks have played in all eight games, averaging 8.4 and 7.0 mpg. The five starters along with Hunter and Shin are all averaging at least 12 mpg (Shin) with Shaw’s 36 mpg topping the group. Jasmine Taylor (# 24, 5-9 Fr. G), Tyler Holley (# 40, 6-2 Soph. C) and Jenna Lee (# 55, 5-11 Soph. F) have gotten into seven games each but average between six and four minutes each. Ashley Aune (# 15, 5-8 Fr. G) has played in four games. In case you are wondering, A. Tugler and E. Tugler are twins.

Texas has four players averaging double figures for the season: Nneka (20.5 ppg), Chassidy (17.6 ppg), Chelsea (11.0 ppg) and Cokie (10.3 ppg). For the Horns, the problem is that two of those players missed the game against UCLA with head injuries, Chassidy and Chelsea. Their status for this game is uncertain at this time. Chelsea has only played in one game but has the best FG and 3pt FG% on the team, She took three 3pters and made two for 66.7% in both categories. Three post players (Nneka, 46-83, 55.4%; Cokie, 26-47, 55.3% & Imani, 24-42, 57.1%) join Chassidy (29-57, 50.9%) in making over 50% of their shots from the field. From BTA, Chassidy is 10-21 (47.6%), Empress (3-7, 42.9%) while Nneka has the best percentage, having hit on three of three from BTA. Five Horns have taken at least 10 FTs with Nneka at 28-42 (66.7%). Chassidy is the best FT shooter at 83.3% (20-24). Ashley (2-2, 100%), Anne Marie (7-10, 75.0%) and Celina (3-4, 75.0%) are the other Horns beside Chassidy that are making at least 70% of their FTs.

While it has been noted that Nneka has moved into first place with six straight double doubles, breaking a tie with Tiffany Jackson at five, I think she may have also eclipsed the record held by Jackie Swain of five double figure rebounding games set in the 1980-81 season. Nneka is averaging 13.7 rpg which gives her a double double average for the season. Imani (7.7 rpg), Anne Marie (5.4 rpg), Celina (5.3 rpg) and Cokie (5.0 rpg) provide strong support on the boards to help the Horns hold an 18.2 rebounding margin over opponents. Four players have broken into double figures in assists, led by Celina’s 32. Brady (14), Empress (13) and Ashley (12) rank two, three and four in assists. Imani (18), Nneka (12) and Cokie (10) add a solid block party on the inside for the Horns against opposing shooters. Celina and Nneka lead the way in steals with 12 and 10, respectively.
Nneka and Celina are the only Longhorns to start all six games. Both Chassidy and Empress have started all five games they were available to play in. Due to injuries, Chassidy missed the last game and Empress missed the A&M-CC game. With Chassidy out and Cokie limited, both due to head injuries, the UCLA starting lineup consisted of Nneka, Empress, Imani, Celina and Ashley. Nine players are averaging at least 15 minutes a game with Celina topping the group at an even 30 mpg. Chelsea missed the UCLA game after playing in her first game of the season against A&M-CC. Kayla got her first action of the season against UCLA.

Texas ULM

Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) A. Tugler (5-10 Jr. G)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Simmons (6-1 Jr. F)
Ashley (5-8 Jr. G) Shaw (5-10 Jr. G)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Gray (5-9 Soph. G)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) E. Tugler (5-9 Jr. G) [/pre]

ULM does not have the height to challenge the Horns inside, either offensively or defensively. Horns should dominate inside, scoring and rebounding. If Chassidy is unable to play, the Horns will need to find a scorer or two from outside to relieve defensive pressure inside. If Chassidy is out, I would not be surprised to see ULM pack it inside and dare the Horns to hit from the perimeter. On the other hand, ULM should find it tough going getting Simmons or their other post players clean shots in the paint. Defensive pressure by the Horns’ perimeter players will be needed to keep Shaw and A. Tugler from scoring like they did against Southern Miss.

Looking at the stats, this is a blowout waiting to happen. Several factors could keep that from happening. Chief among those is the availability of Chassidy and Chelsea. If neither is able to go, the Horns’ ability to score from the perimeter take a hit as those are the only two proven outside scorers. The good thing for the Horns is that Empress, Ashley and Brady have, at various times, shown the ability to be scoring threats. They will need to step up and provide a perimeter scoring presence, especially if Chassidy is unable to play. The Texas perimeter players will also have to shut down Shaw and A. Tugler, who are likely to come into this game brimming with confidence in their ability to score.

Game time is this Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7 pm. The game will be televised on the Longhorn Network and carried on KVET 1300 AM radio. There doesn’t appear to be any Bevo’s Bargains for this game. Fran Harris (pxp) and Debbie Antonelli (analyst) will do the video broadcast while Craig Way (pxp) and Amie Smith Bradley (analyst) will handle the radio broadcast.

There are no classes Monday or Tuesday as the students prepare for Finals starting Wednesday. I have no idea if that will affect the crowd one way or another.

Well, when the bench, especially including Imani and Anne Marie, combine to provide about half the points, rebounds, and steals, they are doing a great job. Are they perfect? By no means. There will be plenty for the coaches to harp on coming up to the Tenn. game. A lot of the balls both Anne Marie and Imani lost were slapped out of their hands. I do agree that Imani needs to make better use of her height. My main concern, and with all of the posts, was their difficulty in finishing at the basket. Nneka, especially, had a rough time doing that when usually she is so good at it.

So, I will stand by my comment, that imo, the bench, especially, Brady, Imani and Anne Marie, were superb in this game.
