Texas Tech (12-4, 2-2) has alternated wins and losses since starting Big 12 play. They lost their last game and probably feel that they are due to win this game. Texas, on the other hand, needs to win this game. They come into this game at 7-8 overall and 0-4 in league play. Texas leads the overall series 61-27 but Tech has won the last three games in the series.
Chynna Brown (# 00, 5-8 Sr. G) and Casey Morris (# 15, 5-9 Dr. G) lead the Lady Raiders in scoring at 12.5 and 10.0 ppg, respectively. Just off double figure scoring are Kelsi Baker (# 41, 6-0 Jr. F) at 9.8 ppg and Monique Smalls (# 23, 5-6 Sr. PG) at 8.8 ppg. Brown (17-39, 43.6%), Morris (15-40, 37.5%) and Baker (11-37, 29.7%) have taken the most shots for Tech. Brown (9-18, 50.0%) and Morris (6-19, 31.6%) have been the main 3pt threats for the Lady Raiders. Smalls (3-6, 50.0%) and Amber Battle (# 12, 5-9 Soph. G; 3-4, 75.0%) are other potential threats from BTA. Four Lady Raiders have reached double digits in FT attempts with all four making at least 70% of their FTs. Baker is 15-21 for 71.4%. Smalls has made 14-18 (77.8%). Christine Hyde (# 5, 5-10 Sr. G) has connected on 10-12 FTs for 83.3%. Brown is 7-10 on FTs and 70.0%.
Brown and Baker lead Tech with an average of 7.0 rpg. Hyde is second with 4.3 rpg. Smalls’ 14 assists equals the total for Baker and Morris, who have 7 assists each. Baker and Shauntal Nobles (# 33, 6-3 Jr. F/C) top Tech with two blocks each. Brown and Baker share the team lead in steals with 8 apiece. Mooris’ six steals ranks second.
Nine players have played in all four Big 12 games for Tech. Two others have gotten into one game. Brown, Hyde, Morris, Smalls and Baker have started all four league games. Morris (35.5 mpg), Smalls (35.5 mpg) and Brown (34.0 mpg) are all playing at least 34 mpg. Hyde, Battle, Baker and Jackie Patterson (# 42, 6-1 Jr. F) all average between 12 (Battle) and 29 mpg (Baker). Mary Bokenkamp (# 24, 5-9 Sr. G) averaged 3 mpg in her appearances in Tech’s four league games. Nobles (recovering from Guillian-Barre' Syndrome) is averaging 9 mpg. The Schneider sisters, Haley (# 31, 6-5 Jr. C) and Kellyn (# 13, 6-5 Fr. F/C) have gotten into one game, versus OU. Haley was in for two minutes and Kellyn for less than a minute. It’s difficult to say if they will get in against Texas, even if they are the tallest Lady Raiders.
Horns are led by Chassidy (13.3 ppg) and Nneka (11.3 ppg) as the two players averaging in double figures in league play. Three others are averaging at least 8 ppg: Ashley (8.3 ppg); Empress (8.0 ppg) and Imani (8.0 ppg). Chassidy (14-44, 31.8%) and Nneka (19-48, 39.6%) have taken the most shots in Big 12 games. Next up are Imani (15-36, 41.7%) and Empress (13-34, 38.2%). Chassidy (6-22, 27.3%) and Ashley (8-20, 40.0%) have been the top 3pt threats for Texas in league games. Gigi, in her first extended action after briefly seeing action against WVU, is 2-4 (50.0%) from BTA. Nneka has made the most FTs (7-10, 70.0%) while Brady (6-6, 100.0%) and Ashley (3-3, 100.0%) are prefect from the FT line in Big 12 games.
In Big 12 games, Imani leads in rebounding with an average of 8.5 rpg while Nneka is second at 7.5 rpg and Chassidy and Empress each contribute 6.0 rpg. Empress (13 assists) and Celina (12 assists) are the only Horns that have hit double digit assists in league play. Ashley has 7 assists while Chassidy and Brady have notched 5 assists each. Imani leads the way with 8 blocks while Chassidy has 3 and Brady 2. Chassidy has 8 steals in three games. Celina has 6 in four games and Brady also has 5 steals in four games.
Nneka, Ashley, Empress, Imani, Brady and Sara have played in all four league games to date. Chassidy has played in three games while Gigi has played in the last two games. Anne Marie and Kayla have yet to see action in a Big 12 game. Nneka, Empress, Imani and Chassidy have started in all games that they have played in. Celina has started in one league game. Empress (35.8 mpg), Chassidy (34.7 mpg) and Nneka (30.0 mpg) all average over 30 minutes per game. Ashley, Imani and Celina all average over 20 mpg while Brady and Sara average between 14 and 11 mpg, respectively. Gigi played 12 minutes in the game against OSU after getting in for 2 minutes in her first game back against WVU.Projected lineups based on last game:
[pre]
Texas TTU
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Brown (5-8 Sr. G)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Baker (6-0 Jr. F)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Hyde (5-10 Sr. G)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Morris (5-9 Sr. G)
Ashley (5-8 Jr. G) Smalls (5-6 Sr. G) [/pre]
The Horns will have a significant height advantage with Nneka and Imani inside and 6-4 Sara and 6-2 Gigi coming off the bench. Tech will counter with quickness and physicality. Tech has a basic 7 player rotation with others getting for a few minutes. Look for Texas to play 9 players with possibly another two in the rotation depending on health. Nneka and Imani will provide the main scoring threat inside while Chassidy, Ashley and Empress look to score from the perimeter. The main defense so far against Texas has been the zone. Texas has struggled to penetrate and to hit from the perimeter, making it difficult for the post players to get free inside. Tech will run and try to take advantage of quickness in transition to score. Smalls will present another challenge for Empress as she continues to line up against some outstanding Gs in the league. Baker and Hyde will have the challenge of stopping the Horns inside presence of Nneka and Imani. Nobles will provide some relief and height as she continues to recover from Guillian-Barre' Syndrome and gets stronger. The Schneider sisters could give Tech some height if they get into the game.

This will match two teams struggling to score. This is a game where Texas should dominate inside, especially being able to get second chances with offensive rebounds. Tech, if they have to set up in a half court game, could find it difficult to score inside. Neither team is too dependent on the three although Tech is getting better results from their 3pt attempts. For Tech, they will look to force Texas into TOs, something that the Horns have done at an average of 19 TOs per game. Tech, with a more veteran team, makes 13.8 TOs a game.
Tipoff is at 7 PM this Wednesday at the Frank Ervin Center. The game will be carried on the Longhorn Network with Fran Harris doing play by play and Debbie Antonelli the analysis. Craig Way and Amie Smith Bradley will do the radio broadcast on KVET 1300 AM.
