Texas (14-7; 5-4) hosts Tech (6-15; 0-10) this Wednesday. The Longhorns will be seeking to snap a five game losing streak to the Lady Raiders that started on 01/28/12. Both coaches will be seeking their first win over their opponent as head coaches for their respective schools. Texas is coming off a tough 87-73 road loss to Baylor. Tech dropped a close home game to Kansas, 70-62 in their last outing. Tech is looking for their first league win this season while Texas will be trying to extend a 4-0 home winning streak in Big 12 play.
Nneka is averaging a double double (12.2 ppg & 10.9 rpg) in league play to lead the team in both categories. Imani ranks second in scoring with 11.4 ppg. Chassidy (9.6 ppg) and Brady (8.6 ppg) are the 3rd and 4th leading scorers. Texas has seven player that have taken at least 10 3pters in league play. Brady has been the one that has taken and made the most treys, going 13-33 for 39.4%. Chassidy, in four league games, is 7-17 (41.2%) from BTA. Gigi (45.5%) and Nekia (40.0%) also have been shooting well from BTA. Both Celina and Krystle are an identical 5-15 (33.3%) shooting the 3pter. As befits a team that is strong inside, the posts are taking a big part of the shots. Texas has averaged 57.7 shots a game. Nneka averages 9.4 shots, Imani 9.9, and Kelsey 4.3. Guards/wings average as follows: Brady 7.3, Chas 9.0, Celina 4.1, Empress 6.9 and Krystle 5.0. Nneka, with 34 makes on 51 attempts (66.7%), have been by far the player logging the most time at the FT line. Imani, with 17 FT attempts, has the second most FT attempts on the game. Brady (14-16, 87.5%) is second in FTs made. Her percentage ranks second to Kelsey’s 88.9% (8-9).
Imani is second in rebounding with an average of 6.1 rpg. Kelsey (4.8 rpg) and Empress (4.1 rpg) rank third and fourth, respectively. Imani leads with 2.5 bpg while Nneka averages 1.2 bpg and Kelsey adds 1.1 bpg. Those three combine for 4.8 of the team’s 5.4 bpg. Horns have two players averaging just over 1 steal per game: Brady at 1.3 spg and Celina at 1.1 spg.
Brady leads in mpg with an average of 32.3 mpg. Nneka (28.3 mpg) leads a group of seven that average over 16 mpg. Two others average just over 9 mpg. Nine players have played in all nine conference games. Imani has played in 8 of nine and Chassidy has played in all five games since she was cleared to play since her knee injury. The rotation is eleven with three others available. Brady and Celina have been the constants in the lineup, starting all 9 Big 12 games. A total of nine players have started at least one game.
Ashley Battle (# 12, 5-9 Jr. G) is the face of the Lady Raiders offense. She is their leading scorer (18.3 ppg), third in assists (1.8 apg), leads in rebounding (6.4 rpg) and is their top shooter from the field (65-157) and from the FT line (48-68). She is also Tech’s leader in steals at 1.1 spg. Ivonne Cook-Taylor (# 2, 5-8 RS Fr. G; 6.8 ppg), Minta Spears (# 3, 5-10 RS Fr. G; 6.4 ppg) and Marina Lizarazu (# 1, 5-8 Fr. G; 5.4 ppg) are the other top scorers for the Lady Raiders. Jasmine Caston (# 23, 5-10 Fr. G; 11-31, 35.5%) and Lizarazu (22-49, 35.3%) are the most accurate from BTA. Spears (11-47, 23.4%) has taken the most 3s. Battle has taken 27 3s in league play but has only hit on 5 (18.5%). Spears has the best FT percentage 13-16, 81.3%) among those that have attempted at least 10 FTs.
Spears (2.1 apg) and Lizarazu (2.0 apg) are the top distributors for Tech. Haley Schneider (# 31, 6-5 Sr. C) is Tech’s top shot blocker with 1.9 bpg. Younger sister Kellyn Schneider (# 13, 6-5 Soph. F/C) is second in blocks with 0.6 bpg. Shauntal Nobles (# 33, 6-3 RS Sr. F/C), Caston, and Spears are second on the team to Battle with 8 steals each.
First year coach Candi Whitaker has ten players on her roster. Only one, H. Schneider, has not played in all ten games. And she missed one due to illness. Nine of the ten are averaging at least 15 mpg with the tenth, K. Schneider, averaging 8.3 mpg. Tech’s two top players, Battle and Spears, average 35.1 and 30.5 mpg, respectively. No one else averages more than 21 mpg. Three players have started all ten league games: Spears, Battle and Audrisa Harrison (# 24, 5-10 Jr. G). Lizarazu (6 starts), H. Schneider (2 starts), Nobles (8 starts) and Diamond Lockhart (# 5, 5-5 Fr. G; 4 starts) have split the starts on the other two spots.Projected starting lineups:Texas
#2, Celina Rodrigo, 5-8 Soph. G
#3, Nneka Enemkpali, 6-1 Jr. F
#24, Chassidy Fussell, 5-10 Sr. G
#32, Brady Sanders, 5-11 Soph. G
#34, Imani McGee-Stafford, 6-7 Soph. C
Texas Tech
#3, Minta Spears, 5-10 RS Fr. G
#5, Diamond Lockhart, 5-5 Fr. G
#12, Amber Battle, 5-9 Jr. G
#24, Audrisa Harrison, 5-10 Jr. G
#33, Shauntal Nobles, 6-3 RS Sr. F/C
This is going to be a tough matchup for Tech inside. They usually start a four guard line with none taller than 5-10 Harrison. Will they decide to go bigger, starting either 6-5 of the Schneider sisters along side Nobles or stay with their regular lineup? Either way, Tech will have trouble keeping Texas from scoring inside and from winning the rebound battle. For Battle, she will be facing a rotation of Brady, Empress, Chas, Brianna along with an occasional side of Celina and Krystle. Whoever is on the floor and not Battle will be hounding Spears. Lizarazu, a teammate of KSU’s Romero on the Spanish National teams, is a good penetrator, passer and shooter. Celina, Krystle and Empress, who all play the point for Texas, will need to not lose her when she is in the game. Lockhart, currently starting at point for Tech, is more of a distributor than a scorer at this stage of her career. Texas will need to use ball and player movement to take advantage of Tech’s difficulties guarding the 3pt line. However, Texas cannot forget that the biggest advantage they should enjoy is inside. They need to dominate on both ends rebounding. H. Schneider did a good job defensively against the Kansas posts in Tech’s last game but it will not get easier for her and the rest of the Tech posts against the Texas post players.
