The Southern University Jaguars roll into Austin on a four game losing streak that leaves them at 1-4. They will face off with a Texas team coming of a win over New Mexico to go to 6-0 halfway into a six game home stand. Texas is 4-0 over the Jaguars, with the last win coming on Nov. 30, 2006. SU has played Ole Miss, Illinois and Minnesota in their last three games, losing by an average score of 57.3 to 86.7 with Minnesota’s 45 pt. win skewing the average a bit.
Southern is led by Britney Washington (# 21, 5-10 Jr. G) who is scoring at a 19.0 ppg clip and Kendra Coleman (# 23, 5-7 Sr. G) who is averaging 12.4 ppg. Jasmine Jefferson (# 15, 6-1 Sr. P), an All-SWAC first team honoree last season, checks in at 8.6 ppg. Coleman was named to last season’s Louisiana Sports Writers Association second team. Those three are the most prolific shooters for Southern. Washington has hit on 36.3% (33-91) of her shots. Coleman is at 28.6% (20-70) while Jefferson is making 38.8% (19-49) of her shots. Quitesha Scott (# 11, 5-5 Sr. G) is making 53.8% but has only taken 13 shots in five games (she has made 7). Washington has made two thirds of the Jaguars’ 3pters while taking just over 53% of the team’s treys (16-52, 30.8%). Coleman (7-35, 20.0%) is the only Jaguar who has hit double digit 3pt attempts. Five Jaguars have reached double digit FT attempts. Kenidi Robinson (# 33, 5-11 Jr. P) has hit 6-6 for 100%. Washington (13-17, 76.5%), Coleman (15-19, 78.9%) and Keonia Parrish (# 20, 5-7 Sr. G; 7-9, 77.8%) are the other Southern players that are over 70% in FTs. No other player is making more than 60% of their FTs.
Five Jaguars average at least 4.8 rpg with Briana Green (# 1, 5-11 Fr. G) leading with 6.8 rpg off the bench. Scott leads the team with 17 assists while Coleman adds 12. Cortnie Purnell (# 30, 6-0 Soph. G) is the leading shot blocker with 5 blocks with Washington second with four. Coleman and Jefferson with six steals each top Southern in this category.
Washington, Coleman, Jefferson, Scott and Robinson have started all five games for Southern. Six other players have played in all five games with another having played in four games. Nine players average between 13 mpg (Shaquandria Litmon, # 4, 5-5 Sr. G) and 27.4 mpg (Coleman).
Horns have three players with double digit scoring averages heading into this game: Kelsey (14.0 ppg), Nneka (11.3 ppg) and Ariel (10.3 ppg). Brooke (8.2 ppg), Brady (8.0 ppg), Empress (7.5 ppg) and Brianna (7.5 ppg) all provide strong scoring support. Six players are averaging at least five shots a game: Brady (11-26, 42.3%), Brianna (20-39, 51.3%), Brooke (18-41, 43.9%), Nneka (27-43, 62.8%), Ariel (19-47, 40.4%), Empress (16-52, 30.8%) and Kelsey (40-64, 62.5%). Kelsey, Nneka and Brianna are the players hitting at least 50% of their shots. Brooke is the main 3pt threat at 11-20 (55.0%). Ariel at 3-6 remains the other besides Brianna (1-1) making at least 50% of their treys. Celina (3-8, 37.5%) and Brady (3-9, 33.3%) give the Horns two other 3pt shooters opponents need to account for. Nneka has been to the FT line the most (27 times) while Ariel has made the most FTs (21). Six Horns have reached double figures in FT attempts with making at least 80%: Ariel (20-25, 84.0%), Brady (15-17, 88.2%) and Tasia (12-15, 80.0%).
The top three rebounders are Nneka (7.7 rpg), Kelsey (6.0 rpg) and Brianna (5.2 rpg). Celina leads with an average of 3.0 apg. Brady (2.8 apg), Empress (2.2 apg) and Ariel (2.0 apg) have also broken double figures in total assists. Ariel with 10 steals is the first Texas player to reach double digits in steals this season. Brooke and Nneka with 7 steals are second in this category. Nneka (11 blocks) and Kelsey (9 blocks) combine for 20 of Texas’ 25 team blocks.
Kelsey, Nneka and Empress have started all six games for Texas. Celina has started the last five. Ariel started the first five. Brady started game six in place of Ariel. Krystle has started one game. Kelsey’s 28.7 mpg leads nine players averaging at least 10 mpg and six of those averaging at least 20 mpg. Other than Imani, who seems to be on schedule to return by the start conference, the Horns are back to full strength with 13 players having seen action this season.Projected starters based on the last game:[pre]Texas Southern Uni.
Nneka (6-1 Sr. F) Jefferson (6-1 Sr. P)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Robinson (5-11 Jr. P)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G) Coleman (5-7 Sr. G)
Empress (5-7 Jr. G) Washington (5-10 Jr. G)
Celina (5-8 Jr. G) Scott (5-5 Sr. G)
Southern is going to have trouble stopping Texas’ inside game. Their two tallest players, Yamine Nelson (# 12, 6-3 Sr. P) and Jadea Brundidge (# 5, 6-2 Jr. P) have yet to play this season. Jefferson and Taylor Mack (# 32, Fr. P) at 6-1 are the tallest posts that have played for the Jaguars this season. Washington and Coleman will be the focus of the Horns’ perimeter defense. Both teams use a lot of players with Texas going a bit deeper with up to 13 players in the rotation to Southern’s primary nine.

Southern depends a lot on the 3. Horns’ perimeter defense will need to identify the shooters, basically Washington and Coleman so far this season, and not give up an open shot. While Southern’s pace allows them to get off about eight more shots a game than Texas, they are making about 100 percentage points less than Texas (45.3% to 34.9%). They will not the going any easier against the Horns defense, especially inside. Nneka and Kelsey are making over 60% of their shots. They will have a significant height advantage inside. Horns prefer an inside-outside game. That should be in full display against the Jaguars.
Attendance should get a boost from 5000+ elementary school students attending the morning game.
Look for: Nneka has an excellent chance to reach 1000 pts in her career by the time this home ends as she is 26 pts from that milestone. She also has an outside chance to reach 1000 rebs this season as well as she had 723 rebs entering the season. She has averaged 282 rebs a season the last two years she has been a starter.
