OU (11-2, 1-0) comes to Austin to play Texas (7-5, 0-1) this Saturday. The Sooners pulled out a 71-68 win over WVU at Norman while Texas lost in overtime to ISU in Ames. Since the 2005-06 season, OU has won 11 of 15 with the teams each winning on their home court last season.

In Big 12 play, OU has five players in double figures, led by Aaryn Ellenberg’s (# 3, 5-7 Jr. G) 19 pts. Sharane Campbell (# 24, 5-10 Soph. G) had 17 pts vs WVU. Joanna McFarland (# 53, 6-3 Sr. F) added 13 pts. Nicole Griffin (# 4, 6-6 Jr. C)had 11 pts while Morgan Hook (# 10, 5-10 Jr. G) had 10. These five were the starters. They got one point from Nicole Kornet (# 1, 6-1 Fr. G/F). Ellenberg (5-12, 41.7%), Hook (3-11, 27.3%) and Campbell (4-7, 57.1%) took 30 of OU’s 44 shots. McFarland was a perfect 5-5 from the field. OU was 2-8 (25%) from BTA with Ellenberg (0-3), Hook (1-2) and Campbell (1-3) taking all eight treys. Ellenberg and Hook are the most likely to launch a 3 as Ellenberg has hit on 44-91 (48.4%) and Hook 20-53 (37.7%) for the season. McFarland, their C, is 7-25 from BTA for the season while Kornet (13-41, 31.7%) has been another 3pt threat for the Sooners. The Sooners come into Austin after hitting 31 of 39 FTs against WVU. They were able to keep WVU off the FT, as WVU only got 13 FT attempts. The starters were 30 of 37 from the FT line.

McFarland started off the Big 12 season by getting a double double (13 pts & 13 rebs). Campbell joined her with 12 rebs to go with 17 pts. Hook had four assists to lead OU against WVU. Griffin got 3 blocks to lead OU in this category. Ellenberg had two steals to lead the team.

With only eight players ready to play, the five starters—Ellenberg, Hook, Campbell, McFarland and Griffin all played at least 30 minutes with Hook (37) and Ellenberg (36) topping the Sooners in minutes played. Kornet got in for six minutes as did Portia Durrett (# 31, 6-1 Jr. F). Jasmine Hartman (# 45, 5-10 Sr. G) was the main player off the bench with 21 minutes. Eden Williams (# 33, 5-3 Soph. G) and Tara Dunn (# 43, 6-2 Fr. F), two VB players that recently joined the WBB team, did not play in this game.

Three Horns scored 15 pts each in the first Big 12 game of the season: Chassidy, Cokie and Ashley. Nneka joined them in double figures with 12 pts. Chassidy (6-15) and Nneka (5-15) took almost half of the FGs attempted by Texas. Cokie (5-8) and Imani (2-4) shot well when in the game but both were limited by foul trouble. Ashley was 4-8 from the field and 4-7 from BTA. Chassidy hit 3-9 from BTA as those two combined to hit all seven 3pters the Horns made. Cokie was 5 of 8 from the FT as she got there twice as much as any other Horn. Ashley was a perfect 3 of 3 from the FT line.

Chassidy led the team with 8 rebs while Nneka added 7 and Empress 6. Empress also led the team with six assists. Imani had four blocks in only 12 minutes before fouling out. Chassidy had six steals in the game.

Also playing with a short bench due to injuries and with Cokie and Imani picking quick fouls, Nneka played for 40 minutes and Chassidy 42. Empress was in for 37 minutes and Ashley for 31. Cokie (19), Imani (12), Celina (26) and Sara (17) all were in for double digit minutes. Texas went with a tall lineup with Chassidy, Empress, Nneka, Cokie and Imani getting the start for the Horns’ first Big 12 game of the season. Horns are still waiting for Anne Marie and Gigi to be released to play.

Projected starters based on the last game:
[pre]
Texas OU

Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Hook (5-10 Jr. G)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Ellenberg (5-7 Jr. G)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Griffin (6-6 Jr. C)
Cokie (6-4 Sr. P) McFarland (6-3 Sr. F)
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Campbell (5-10 Soph. G) [/pre]

This game will match two of the better 3pt shooters in the league in OU’s Ellenberg and Texas’ Chassidy. Imani could also impact the game defensively with her shot blocking. While Griffin does not have a great shot blocking average, she had nine blocks in OU’s 73-67 win last January 11, 2012. Ellenberg’s speed and quickness will present problems for Texas defenders as they need to conscious of her ability to hit the three as well as her ability to penetrate. Nneka and McFarland are two of the best rebounders in the league. The inside battle should be worth the price of admission by itself. Texas will have a slight advantage in height while OU has more experience. At this point, neither team is very deep at any spot. Foul trouble, a significant factor in the Horns loss to ISU, could also play a big part in this game. OU is a better FT shooting team than Texas and does a good job of getting to the FT line. OU’s focus will be on two players: Chassidy and Nneka although after Ashley hit four 3s against ISU, it’s likely that they will also be sure of knowing where she is on the court.

Both teams are coming off close opening games, with OU pulling out a win at home and Texas losing in OT in Ames. Both have thin benches with VB players called in to help out. For OU, the VB players have yet to play as they learn the system. For Texas, Sara Hattis has gotten her feet wet, playing 17 minutes vs ISU after a brief appearance against Central Michigan. Neither team is deep. Foul trouble and FT shooting are likely to have an impact on the outcome of the game. Both teams like to run with OU having one of the best at that in Ellenberg, who is capable of stopping and hitting the 3 or penetrating for a layup. OU’s starting five is experienced while Texas starts two to three first year players. Texas does have a slight edge in height but OU is pretty strong inside with McFarland and Griffin. Horns can’t afford to give up such a big edge in FTs to another good FT shooting team. They will need to take advantage of second chances to gain an edge as well as playing stout defense.Bevo’s Bargains for this game:

Interesting that they have Brady listed as a starter. Of course, we have had so many different lineup changes it wouldn't surprise me.

nice recap of the Sooners' win over WVU. The Mountaineers are going to remind people of A&M in their style of play. Also looks like the refs are calling it close, at least they were in the first round of games.

I think we have a chance if we play with as much heart as the other night AND improve FT & reduce # of fouls. Amie said many times the other night that Cokie, as a senior, should not be making the fouls she did, much less the others. I suspect Imani was horrified that she fouled out after 12 minutes and will work to improve that given all the other areas that she has improved already. The young guards…well, they might need to pick something to improve on each week and by February should be pretty decent.

There really is no excuse for such poor FT shooting in my mind. Get in the gym and get it figured out. We don’t need to be fouling the other teams so much, but sometimes that seems random from the refs, although I suppose the players need to adjust. Maybe the refs need to get in game shape too.

I really like these kids and think when the light bulb clicks for the guards and they learn to trust & play in rhythm that we’ll be very competitive. Karen is a good coach. I saw her take a Charlotte team and hold their own against a good (not yet great, but very good) Notre Dame team for most of the game. They made Muffet sweat. She can coach and motivate, so I have faith in her, and I think these players are good enough to compete strong with most of the Big 12. I’m not sure they realize it yet or realize what it takes. They probably think they are working together, but when the light bulb clicks they’ll be so relieved and be able to ramp it up. Someone told me that it really clicks between freshman and sophomore year. Hopefully, the dimmer switch starts moving up this year and it gets brighter.

Go Horns! Texas Fight!

I really don't know why we are having such trouble hitting FTs. 7 of 10 should be the minimum acceptable. I'm looking forward to having another couple of guards scoring consistently now that Ashley has started to make her shots to complement Chassidy.

Let me set something straight with you. My happiness at Texas losing was during your former million dollar coach era in year 5 who didn't give us our bang for the buck. Since March 19, 2012 it's been a godsend!!

Cynt nailed it. We missed way too many chippies and OU shot lights out, 64% on 3 pointers, 11 of them. We played much better than the San Diego series. Just had one dry spell. These young ones are learning!

11 of 17 from BTA pretty much explains how OU won. Three players were perfect from BTA for OU, going 3-3, 3-3 and 1-1. The team is not getting to the FT line like they should and they are certainly having trouble converting when they get there. Only Cokie out of our four posts got to take a single FT, something hard to believe considering how physical it was inside. She had four FT attempts.

There were some good things: Nneka had a double double, Empress came out of her shooting slump and did a good job on Ellenberg, Ashley continued her good shooting, Chassidy played her usual strong game, Imani played for a long stretch with three fouls and did well scoring and rebounding. Brady had a good game passing as well as being perfect from the FT line (4-4).

The defense is going to have to pick up to go with the balanced scoring we have displayed the past two games in order for the Horns to start pulling out these close games. And the FTs are going to have to improve. If they are only getting to the FT line 13-15 times a game, they can't afford to miss many.

We have some warriors on our team who should remind us that this isn't all about wins & losses. Chas played all out as usual, but this time with a heavy and likely exhausted heart. Cokie continues to play through tough physical issues and leaves it all on the floor. Celina lost her grandfather before a recent game.

These are big things for young adults to go through at any point, and I really appreciate how they are able to lace 'em up and give all they have.

I was very encouraged about several things. We scored on multiple inbounds plays, we had fewer turnovers, twice as many rebounds, and almost twice as many assists as OK. We had morensteals and more points in the paint. The stats looked good, but alas not the final score. The team is improving, and although they might not win many conference games, they are playing better.

It's not very often you see a team essentially double their opponents in rebounds and assists and still lose the game, especially with the turnovers even.

We still lack a playmaker...someone who can take over a game and carry the team. I've said it since GG. We've got to recruit at least two or three in hopes of getting one of these type of players. I'm all about team ball but you need one player come heck or high water that will carry the team thru and be the go to player to make it happen.

Yes, I think Nneka might be this person with the competitive spirit she's displayed of late. But I think this characteristic is in their DNA and they just do it w/out even thinking about it.

I would agree with both playmaker and point guard but would personally say team leader. Tomato - Towmatow - we haven't had one since Jamie.

I agree about having playmakers, but believe both Chas and Nneka have shown they are more than capable of taking over games. The problem is having others step up, and demand attention, so those two get some breathing room. If no one else is scoring, which has been a problem, defenses will continue to key on our top threats. Ashley really stepped up these past two games, and Empress reached double figures in the OU contest. If that continues to happen we're going to see better production from Chas and Nneka as well.

As far as the point is concerened, Celina is the most natural at that position, and best at dishing the ball. She's our assist leader by some margin, but her scoring has been almost non-existent. Don't really know what the answer is but for the time being it looks like we'll continue to see shared duty on that front.
