Texas (15-7, 6-4) comes into this game over a win over Texas Tech Wednesday. ISU (16-6, 5-6) lost a heartbreaker at home to TCU Wednesday, 61-60. After making 11 3s in the game, ISU gave up a last second 3 to drop the game. Texas will be defending a 5-0 conference home record while ISU is 3-2 in Big 12 road games. After starting 2-0, they are 1-2 in their last three road games. Horns are 10-14 in the series, having lost all three games the teams played last season. This will be the first time Texas and ISU meet with another game set for later in Ames. Since starting 14-0 and 2-0 in conference, the Cyclones have lost four in a row before alternating wins and losses in the past four games.
Texas has two players in double figure scoring in league play: Nneka at 11.8 ppg and Imani at 11.6 ppg. Chassidy is at 9.5 ppg while Brady adds 8.7 ppg. Brady continues to be the top 3pt shooter for Texas at 14-35 for 40%. Chassidy is averaging 40% on 8-20 treys. Nekia is also at 40% from BTA on 4-10 shooting. Gigi has the best 3pt percentage at 50% (7-14). Both Celina and Krystle are at 37.5% from BTA on identical 6-16 shooting. Nneka has gone to the FT line 53 times and converted 36 for 67.9%. She is the only player that has made it to the FT line more than 19 times in league games. Imani (12-19, 63.2%) and Brady (15-18, 83.3%) are the next in line in getting to the FT line. Horns have five players making over 70% of their FTs while eight make less than 70% and one has yet to attempt a FT. As a team, Texas averages 67.4% on 126-187. What makes it difficult for other teams is that Texas has five players that average between 8-10 shots a game. And a slew of others that average between 3-5 shots a game.
Nneka is currently the only Big 12 player averaging a double double in league play with her 10.5 rpg to go with her 11.8 ppg. Imani is second in rebounding at 6.0 rpg while Kelsey adds 5.1 rpg. Celina is the assist leader with 4.4 apg while Empress (2.6 apg), Brady (2.2 apg) and Krystle (1.9 apg) all help in helping Texas average an assist on 60% of their FGs made. Imani leads in blocks with 2.3 bpg while Kelsey and Nneka each averages 1.1 bpg. Celina (1.3 spg) and Brady (1.2 spg) top the team in steals.
Nneka, Kelsey, Celina, Chassidy & Brady started the last game. Celina and Brady have started every league game to date. Nine players have played in all ten Big 12 games. Imani has played in 9 while Chassidy has played in the last six since she returned from a knee injury. Horns have a rotation of 11 players. Brady is the only one that averages over 30 minutes at 31.1 mpg. Five others average over 20 mpg while two average around 17 mpg and three at 9 mpg.
The ISU Cyclones have three players sporting double digit scoring averages in league play. Hallie Christofferson ($5, 6-3 Sr. F) leads the way with 16.5 ppg. Nikki Moody (#4, 5-8 Jr. G) average 128 ppg. Jadda Buckley (#11, 5-8 Fr. G) completes the trio at 10.7 ppg. Christofferson (93.2%) and Moody (91.9%) are two of three Cyclones that make at least 90% of their FTs. Brynn Williamson (# 22, 5-11 Jr. G/F) completes the trio by hitting on 92.0% of her FTs. Those three are among five players that have taken at least 25 FTs. All five make over 72% of their FTs as ISU is making 81.8% of FTs as a team. Williamson is the primary shooter from BTA at 27.2% (22-81). Nicole "Kidd" Blaskowsky (# 15, 5-7 Soph. G) is another threat from BTA. She has made 23-72 (31.9%). Four others join those two in taking at least 22 treys during conference play. Christofferson is 8-32 (25%). Moody is 15-50 from BTA (30%). Buckley has made 12-33 (36.4%). Seanna Johnson (# 12, 5-10 Fr. G) is at 50% from BTA (11-22). By comparison, only Brady (35) and Chas (20) have taken at least 20 3s.
Johnson is the leading rebounder at 8.5 rpg. Christofferson is second at 7.3 rpg. Moody adds 5.0 rpg while Williamson averages 4.2 rpg. Moody has 12 steals while Johnson is second with 8. Christofferson leads with 1.8 bpg. Williamson is second with 0.8 bpg. There are 13 players on the roster. Madison “Maddie” Baier (# 34, 6-4 Soph. F/C) is out for the season with an ACL injury suffered in early December. Of the 12 remaining, 7 have played in all 11 conference games. The other five have played in no more than 7 games (Tenisha Matlock, # 21, 6-2 Sr. F/C) and her 4.3 mpg is the most of the five. All of the seven that have seen action in all the league games average double digit minutes, ranging from Blaskowsky’s 21.9 mpg to Christofferson’s team high 34.9 mpg. Christofferson, Moody (34 mpg), Johnson (30.7 mpg) and Williamson (34.0 mpg) have started all 11 league games. Buckley (32.5 mpg) has started 9 games while Blaskowsky (21.9 mpg) has started 2 games. Fallon Ellis (# 32, 5-11 Jr. G/F) averages 12.1 mpg in her 11 appearances.
Projected starting lineups:
Texas
#2, Celina Rodrigo, 5-8 Soph. G
#3, Nneka Enemkpali,, 6-1Jr. F
#24, Chassidy Fussell, 5-10 Sr. G
#32, Brady Sanders, 5-11 RS Soph. G
#40, Kelsey Lang, 6-5 Fr. C
ISU
#5, Hallie Christofferson, 6-3 Sr. F
#4, Nikki Moody, 5-8 Jr. G
#12, Seanna Johnson, 5-10 Fr. G
#22, Brynn Williamson, 5-11 Jr. G/F
#15, Nicole "Kidd" Blaskowsky, 5-7 Soph. G
ISU has four players 6-2 or taller on their roster. One, Baier, is out of the season. Jordan Jensen (#35, 6-2 Fr. F) has played two minutes in one league game. Tenisha Matlock (#21, 6-2 Sr. F/C) averages 4.3 minutes in the seven league games she has played in. That basically leaves 6-3 Christofferson on an island to deal with Texas’ rotation of 6-7 Imani & 6-5 Kelsey and maybe 6-1 Nneka and 6-2 Gigi. None of the other ISU players in their 7 player rotation are taller than 5-11 while Texas still has 6-4 Lilley in reserve behind Imani and Kelsey. ISU lives and dies by the three. Half of their shots (297 of 607; 27 attempts per game) are from BTA. They lead the conference in 3s made per game at 8.6 per game. Only KSU, with 227 attempts (22.7 per game) from BTA, has taken more than 187 3s in league play. Horns will need to guard the 3pt line. In addition, they will need to be aware that Christofferson is capable of shooting and making the 3.
For ISU, the problem will be stopping Texas’ inside game. Christofferson cannot afford to get in foul trouble. Plus, whoever is guarding Nneka will have problems matching up with her. They cannot afford to leave the Texas guards open while collapsing inside. This season, the Texas guards have made that an unattractive option. I feel for Christofferson this season. Last season, she was a nightmare matchup on the wing and at times in the four. This season, she is ISU’s lone option in the post which eliminates a lot of the matchup problems she created last season. She is still one of the Big 12’s best players and will give our posts problems Sunday.
