This will be the first meeting between Texas and the Cornell Big Red. Texas comes into this game at 6-2 and off their first home loss of the season to Tennessee, 94-75. The Big Red is coming a Tuesday game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi which they lost 52-49 to drop their record to 5-4. This is the second of a two game swing through Texas for the Big Red.

Cornell has two scorers averaging in double figures. Allyson DiMagno (# 42, 5-11 Jr. G) averages 13.9 ppg. Clare Fitzpatrick (# 24, 6-1 Sr. F) scores 11.4 ppg. Among players that have played in at least 8 games, Kristina Danielak (# 3, 6-1 Sr. F) has the best shooting percentage at 60.0% (15-25). DiMagno has made the most FGs (40) and attempted the most (88) for a percentage of 45.5%. Fitzpatrick (34-73, 46.6%) and Spencer Lane (# 24, 5-7 Sr. G; 25-53, 47.2%) are the other Big Red players that made over 40% of their FGs. Shelby Lyman (# 12, 5-8 Jr. G) is their most prolific shooter from BTA, hitting 32.6% (14-43) treys. Three other players that are threats from BTA are: DiMagno (6-17, 35.3%); Stephanie Long (# 4, 5-7 Jr. G; 12-36, 33.3%) and Taylor Flynn (# 10, 5-9 Sr. G; 10-41, 24.4%). There are three players the Big Red want on the FT line: DiMagno (39-47, 83.0%); Long (14-17, 82.4%) and Fitzpatrick (35-47, 74.5%). In the game against A&M-CC, they were a combined 10-11 (91%) from the FT line.

DiMagno is averaging a double double as she pulls in 12.0 rpg to go with her team leading 13.9 ppg. After her, Long (3.9 rpg)& Fitzpatrick (3.8 rpg) are the second and third leading rebounders. Lane leads the team in assists (2.8 apg) while Long (2.4 apg), Lyman (2.3 apg) and Fitzpatrick (2.1 apg)all average at least two assists per game. DiMagno leads with 19 steals while Lane is second with 12. Fitzpatrick’s 7 blocks tops the team. The Big Red’s 25 total blocks is just four less than Imani has in one less game.

While Cornell has 15 players on the rosters and 14 have gotten into at least one game, their rotation is limited to eight players. Seven have played in all nine games with one playing in eight. Their lineup has been constant all season with DiMagno, Fitzpatrick, Lyman, Lane and Long starting all nine games. Flynn and Danielak join the starters in averaging double digit minutes in all nine games. Aspen Chandler (# 23, 5-7 Jr.G) has played in eight games, averaging 6 mpg, and 1.3 ppg. Flynn is the number four scorer coming off the bench. DiMagno, Lyman and Long all average over 30 mpg while Fitzpatrick and Lane are in the high 20s.

Texas has three players in double figures: Chassidy (19.8 ppg), Nneka (17.5 ppg) and Cokie (10.9 ppg). While Chelsea hit for 11 pts in her only game, she has not played since that game on 11/30/12. Her availability continues to be uncertain. Four players are making at least 50 percent of their shots: Cokie (30-56, 53.6%), Nneka (51-100, 51.0%), Imani (30-59, 50.8%) and Chassidy (38-76, 50.0%). Chassidy is the only guard/wing hitting over 36% from the field although Ashley (12-34, 35.3%), Brady (17-49, 34.7%) and Empress (21-62, 33.9%) have started to hit more consistently in the last two games. While Chassidy (13-25, 52.0%) remains the main 3pt threat for Texas, Ashley (7-19, 36.8%) and Empress (3-7, 42.9%) are viable threats from BTA. Nneka should command attention as well as she is 3-4 (75.0%) from BTA. Chassidy (30-34, 88.2%), Brady (9-12, 75.0%) and Nneka (35-50, 70.0%) are the best FT shooters on the team. Nneka leads the team in FTs made and attempted.

Nneka continues to lead the team in rebounding as she averages a double double (17.5 ppg & 12.3 rpg). Imani is second with an average of 8.3 rpg. Cokie (5.6 rpg) and Anne Marie (5.3 rpg) are third and fourth in rebounding. Celina’s 4.75 apg tops the squad while Brady is second with 2.6 apg. Empress (2.3 apg) and Ashley (1.9 apg) are the other leaders in assists. Imani average 2.6 blocks per game. Nneka chips in 1.8 bpg and Cokie 1.6 bpg. In steals, the leaders are Celina (1.9 spg), Empress (1.7 spg), Chassidy (1.5 spg) and Nneka (1.3 spg).No player averages more than 29 mpg although Chassidy had 37 minutes against Tennessee this past Sunday. Chassidy (29.3 mpg), Nneka (26.3 mpg), Celina (27.4 mpg), Empress (26.0 mpg), Ashley (21.9 mpg) and Imani (20.8 mpg) are all averaging over 20 mpg. Brady (19.4 mpg), Cokie (18.6 mpg) and Anne Marie (16.1 mpg) are also averaging in double digit minutes. Seven Horns have started at least two games. Nneka has been the only player to start all eight games. Chassidy (6-6) and Empress (7-7) have also started all games they have been available to play in. Six players have missed at least one game due to injury while Gigi is still recovering from a preseason injury and has yet to play.

Texas Cornell

Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) DiMagno (5-11 Jr. F)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Fitzpatrick (6-1 Sr. F)
Chassidy (6-10 Jr. G) Long (5-7 Jr. G)
Ashley (5-8 Jr. G) Lane (5-7 Sr. G)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Lyman (5-8 Jr. G) [/pre]

I am not sure if Nneka and DiMagno will guard each other but the possibility that the two players averaging double doubles will go head to head does exist. Should Cokie be ready to play, Texas will have a potential of 11 while the Big Red pretty much goes seven deep with the eighth player getting around 6 minutes per game.

With Texas, with or without Cokie, enjoying such a height advantage, I would expect the Horns will look to establish the inside game if they are running their half court offense. Cornell simply will not be able to match up inside with the Horns. Almost a third of their shots are 3s. I don’t expect that to change in this game. The Horns’ perimeter defense will need to shut down the Big Red shooters. Whoever is guarding DiMagno will need to be aware that she is capable of popping outside and making the three.

Cornell game preview

This should be an easy win for Texas as long as the team takes care of business. Cornell should not be able to stop Texas inside and will have problems scoring in the paint. Where they will look to stay in the game and possibly pull off the upset is by hitting threes and getting to the FT line where they are hitting 73%. Against A&M-CC, they made 93% of their FTs. They just simply did not get there often enough. The Texas perimeter defense will be tested by the Big Red as they like to shoot the 3. Horns will look to force TOs and run. When they are not able to run, either off TOs or rebounds, look for the inside game to be established and free up the outside shooters.

This should be the biggest crowd that Cornell has played in front of this season as Binghamton had a crowd of 1623. Even with the holidays, the Texas crowd should easily exceed that.

Game time is Thursday at 7 PM CST at the FEC. The LHN will be broadcasting the game with Fran Harris and Debbie Antonelli calling the game. KVET 1300 AM will do the radio broadcast with Jon Madani and Amie Smith Bradley on the mikes.

Bevo’s Bargains for this game is a $5 web coupon for a general admission ticket and 25% off purchases at the Texas Longhorns Official Team Shop at the FEC. The coupon must be presented at the box office. The coupon has four coupons that can be used in four different games, including this one. Each game coupon is $5.

Students are gone now for the break. Hopefully they will begin to come to the games when conference play begins.

"Still wonder how to get more students to attend the games!!"

1. Win
2. Build a basketball arena on campus
3. Win

Well even the men and a top 20 UNC couldnt even get students in the stands last night so I wouldnt anticipate much over the holiday break. Winning and better opponents should help b12 crowds tremendously.

I thought there were quite a few students at the men's game, actually.
Yes -- an on-campus arena is a distinct possibility. They're supposedly considering an area near the swim center -- southeast-ish of DKR. While it's not much closer for students than the FEC, distance-wise, being north of MLK would be huge. And it would actually be designed for basketball. While I have a soft spot for the FEC, it's just not a great b-ball arena.

That unfortunately was an ugly game for Texas. Never seen so many missed easy baskets. Got out to a big lead and then it seemed the team just disappeared until the last five minutes of the game. Glad we won I was just expecting a little more polished product on the court last night.
