As far as Harrison Smith, that's not really true. Rodney Terry sincerely thought Harrison Smith could help the program. Of course, that's not a ringing endorsement of Terry's scouting ability, but it's not like Smith was some kind of hidden player. He was one of the most prolific scorers in the state of Texas.
I didn't agree with the recruitment at the time, but it had more to do with my doubts regarding Smith's ability to help the program than anything else. Frankly, Smith has been a great asset to Texas basketball in any number of ways. He's a terrific teammate. He's very encouraging. Dexter Pittman credits Smith with helping him in terms of his eating habits, for example.
Because of our lack of depth at guard, Harrison has a chance this year to get some meaningful playing time. He's gotta drop some weight though and improve his consistency.
I do not believe the comment about Harrison Smith being signed strictly as bait for Deandre Jordan. That is a total crock of ****.
Back in high school Harrison Smith and Deandre Jordan both played on the same summer AAU teaml(Houston Swoosh). That team was coached by Byron Smith(now an assistant at a&m).
HOWEVER, the package was NEVER Harrison Smith and Deandre. Never. The package was the AAU coach plus Deandre. The entire world knew that. Whichever school gave a job to Byron was going to get Deandre. It had nothing to do with Harrison Smith.
For another thing, Smith had a HUGE summer right before he signed with UT. He was plenty good enough to come on his own. To suggest that he was some sort of charity case that only got a scholarship because he was friends with Deandre boggles the mind.
It surprises me a bit to see the newspaper or anyone associated with the program throw Harrison Smith under the bus this way. Maybe they are trying to challenge him to bow up or quit the program.
Don't anyone hold their breath on J'Covan. From what I've heard, it looks really bleak. I wish the kid best and sure would of liked to see him work out here as I think he's a good kid deep down and he really wants to be a longhorn. I don't know what the plans would be but assuming we know that he doesn't get in, will he have to go to JUCO for 2 years in order to qualify? I forget all the silly juco rules.
And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.
From a very reliable source....Brown will not make it and is not really even trying.
As for Smith, he avg. almost 30 ppg as a senior in HISD. He wasn't taken to lure Jordan. Jordan wanted to go to UT but he let his AAU coach control the situation and thus ended up at A&M. A year later, neither are at A&M.
isn't it just shocking that Jordan's AAU coach didn't get to keep his job after Jordan left??? When is the NCAA gonna step up and do something about this joke that is AAU basketball??? I'm so sick of these scumbags riding the coattails of 17 and 18 yr olds. It's a modern day slave trade and its despicable. These AAU wannabe coaches are the scum of society.
