When Mrs. Reboot and I move back to League City this summer, we are buying a home right away. I need recommendations for our homeowners insurance policy. Who should we go with? We plan on having all our insurance through one carrier, Home, Auto, Rental Property, etc. Any recommendations for or against would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!

My wife and I just bought a house and in our neck of the woods. (NW Houston) The only place that would cover homes in the area was All=STate. We were thrilled b/c by switching we also got a discount of over 1,000 between my wife and I on car insurance.

And no... we didn't switch TO Geico.

We've been dealing with these issues on several threads. Try searching the archives for "homeowners insurance".

Or, try these suggestions from the thread about Allstate:

Try the homeowners insurance policy coverage comparison function on the web site for the Office of Public Insurance Counsel. The Link

You may also want to do a rate comparison using the Homeowners Rate Guides on the Department of Insurance web site. The Link

For a list of insurers actively accepting new homeowners customers, try the list at Helpinsure.com.The Link

If you want to avoid insurers who use credit reports to decide who they will insure, try this link:The Link

If you, your wife, your parents or your in-laws served in the military, you're eligible for USAA. We use them, and they always have real competitive rates, and treat their members well.

Unless USAA has recently (within past 3 months) reversed their underwriting guidelines, the qualifications you have listed no longer make you automatically eligible for homeowners insurance. They have greatly restricted writing of new business and are refusing to insure most people who would otherwise be eligible.

As far as how they treat their members, congratulations on the service you have received, because it does not exemplify the level of service all of their customers receive.

AustinTejasFan,

Are you talking about insuring a home with USAA for the first time? I just insured my 4th house with USAA with NO problems. They didn't require any inspection, I just talked with a rep for about 45 mins and it was done. Now I have had insurance (Renters/homeowners) with USAA for 21 years. I don't know if that has anything to do with it but they have AWAYS treated me right. (Maybe it's due to my Dad know General McDermott, I don't know

"new business"

Yes, first time customer. It is well known that some customers of various insurance companies do receive preferential treatment. That could amount to illegal discrimination.

Well, all I know is they've treated me right for the last 10 years or so.

Of course, I've only been a homeowner for 3.
