Texas Hill Country Wineries

Me and some friends are planning on making a trip out to the Hill Country in a couple of weeks to tour the wineries. Has anybody out there done this before? If so do you have any wineries you would recommend or suggestions for the trip in general? Thanks!

I like the Fall Creek (Tow)/Coopers (Llano) combo personally.

There's a number of them you can hit around Fredericksburg - Becker is probably the nicest aesthetically, but I have never been in love with their wine.

There are a number of nice tasting venues if you head out 290 from Oak Hill.

South of Dripping Springs is the Driftwood Winery which does not offer a fancy building but does offer a nice view of a valley and hills. The wine is okay.

Near Johnson City (take the road to Pedernales Falls from there) is the Hill Country Winery (or something like that) that is actually pretty good. Nice tasting room, okay area outside.

Then head towards Fredricksburg. Around Stonewall is the Woodrose winery which has a nice back patio for tasting.

Further down the road, you hit Becker which is a country road drive to the left. I like their wine and the place is really nice. Great veranda that looks out over a lavender field. It's one of my favorite stops when I head west. The wine of theirs I really like is the Prairie Rotie. (I don't pretend to have great taste. I can drink just about anything that isn't too sweet.)

Very near Becker is Torre di Pietro or Pietro de Toro. They have an outdoor sipping area that has always had a country band when I stopped in. I am not sure about their wine, but some friends like it best of all the wineries in that area.

Next on the way to Fredsburg is Grape Creek which has just opened a tasting room on a hilltop that is supposed to be very nice. I have not been there.

Chisolm Winery on the far side of Fredricksburg has very nice people, but the wine is Koolaid sweet.

Anyways, those are grouped together for a pretty nice afternoon of tasting, sitting and chatting. For a good dinner, Hannah on Main in Fredricksburg is my girlfriend's favorite place. Upscale fare and prices. It's on main street, northside beyond the fire station.

We'll probably be heading out that way ourselves pretty soon.

My friends and I like to camp out in Luckenbach and visit all of the wineries around Fredricksberg. Roma pretty much nailed it but I would add Bell Mountain to the list of wineries. Its not on the Trail Map but just head out on 16 towards E-Rock and pull over when you see the signs (about 7-10 miles). There's a little old lady the runs the tasting room (which has been empty the 2 times I was there) who is so nice and such a character the she makes the trip worth it. They have some of the best wines in the region, but it is definitely the experience that brings us back.

Torre di Pietra is overrated (most of their wines taste alike) and overpriced ($35-42 a bottle).

Check out a restaurant called the Nest. It's awesome.

Some of the best chocolate cake ever! at "Rather Sweet". I think its owned by Dan Rather's daughter in law.

Think I'm ready for another camping trip.

Dry Comal Creek in New Braunfels is nice. Not much of a view (it sits down in a valley) but they've got a nice covered patio & have some pretty good wines esp. their Fume Blanc (whites are better than reds but that's pretty standard in Texas). If the owner is around he'll hold court & tell you lots of interesting stories.

I really like Flat Creek Estate (Marble Falls) and Spicewood Vineyards (Spicewood). Driftwood Vineyards also has some good stuff, but avoid their two sweet wines -- they are stinkers.

ive never had a good red wine from texas, however, there may be some reserve winery only items that i am not aware of.
