Texas-Ex Tom Landry

The guys on 1530 were discussing Longhorn greats in the context of the retired jerseys, and Ketchum raised the point that people don't realize or seem to forget that Tom Landry played for the Longhorns. Considering that Landry is one of the most important figures in football over the past 50 years, it's odd that the University doesn't do more to recognize him as an alumn, with the exception of maybe a photograph in the media guide.

I've always wondered why the University doesn't promote Landry more. Why is this? I understand if the administration doesn't want to give him the Earl Campbell or James Street treatment, but it sure helps to frequently remind people that this legendary badass coach played football on the 40 acres.

Not only with his great playing at UT but with his many accomplishments afterward one would think Coach Landry would be a shoo in to have his number retired. Strange indeed!

As great as his contribution to the state's football culture, he did not make the same impact as a player as many of his peers. I don't think he harbored ill wwill towards Texas; I think he just was too busy doing other things.

clemens got his number retired. he wasn't even the best pitcher while at UT. but he sure made a name for himself after Texas.

a lot like Landry, but Landry didn't shoot the juice.
