#13/12 Texas (11-2; 1-0) will travel to Morgantown to face an NR/RV WVU (9-3; 0-1) squad that is most likely upset with their performance this past Wednesday in their loss to TCU. The Longhorns, while winning their home opener, also have a lot to improve on in their first Big 12 road trip.

Texas holds an 11-6 edge in this series. Horns have won the last three games, which is the second longest winning streak for Texas. The Horns won five in a row from 12/30/15 through 01/29/17. The longest win streak for WVU were when the Mountaineers won the first two games of the series on 03/17/12 and 01/19/13. Texas has won three away games in a row starting on 12/30/15.

West Virginia Mountaineers (9-3; 0-1)
After one conference game, WVU has only two players hitting in double figures. Naomi Davenport (#0, 6-0 Sr. G/F) scored 22 of the team’s 48 pts. Tynice Martin (#5, 5-11 RS Jr. G) had ten. Katrina Pardee (#22, 5-9 Sr. G) and Lucky Rudd (#15, 5-9 Jr. G) each added 7 pts. Davenport hit 50% from the field (9-18), from BTA (2-4) and from the FT line (2-4). Martin had a poor shooting game, going 3-17 (17.6%) from the field but 3-3 from the FT line. Pardee (3-9) and Rudd (2-6) each hit 33.3% from the field. Those four accounted for all but three shot attempts and all made FGs for WVU. Rudd hit 2-2 from the FT line.

Davenport came up just short of a double double as she grabbed nine rebs to go with her 22 points. Pardee had five rebs while Martin added five and Theresa Ekhelar (#34, 6-6 Sr. C) had four rebs. Pardee led WVU with five assists while Madisen Smith (#30, 5-5 Fr. PG) ended up with three assists. Ekhelar had three blocks and Davenport added one block. Pardee (3 steals) and Ekhelar (2 steals) had five of the team’s eight steals.

The Mountaineers only played seven players against the Horned Frogs although they had ten players that have played this season. Four of their starters played at least 31 minutes: Davenport (40 min.), Martin (40 min.), Pardee (38 min.) and Exhelar (31 min.). The only bench player to get significant minutes was Rudd with 25 minutes. Kari Niblack (#14, 6-1 Fr. F)) logged nine minutes off the bench while starting PG Smith was in for only 17. Of the ten active players, Rudd just became eligible this spring and Kysre Gondrezick (#2, 5-9 RS Soph. G) has only played in five games so far although she had been projected to be the starting PG this year after sitting out last season after her transfer from Michigan. She continues to be out on a leave of absence with her return uncertain. Jala Jordan (#12, 6-2 Fr. F) got just over seven mpg in non-conference games and did not play against TCU. Realistically, since Gondrezick's leave of absence started, the Mountaineers only have nine active players. Rochelle Norris (#31, 6-5 Fr. C), expected to provide depth and gain experience in the post behind Sr. starter Ekhelar, continues to sit out with an injury suffered before the season began. Like Sedona, she is on track to redshirt this year.

Texas Longhorns (11-2; 1-0)
Three Longhorns poured double digit points in Texas’ first league game. Sug went off for 14 points; Danni notched 11 points; Joyner added 10 points and Jatarie had eight points. Texas spread their shots among their ten players. Sug was 5-10 (50.0%) from the field while Jatarie hit on 4-10 (40.0%) to lead Texas in FG attempts. Six of the players hit at least one shot while four missed on all of their attempts. Danni (3-6) and Joyner (4-8) joined Sug in hitting at least half their shots. Seven players attempted at least one trey with Sug (1-1; 100%), Danni (3-4; 75%) and Joyner (1-3; 33.3%) connecting for all the five 3s Texas made. Danni, Charli and Destiny were each 2-2 from the FT line to top the team in FT%. Jada (5-8; 62.5%) and Sug (3-6; 50.0%) led the team in FT attempts.

Danni almost corralled a double double with her eight rebs to go with her 11 pts. Jatarie had seven rebs and Olamide six rebs. Sug had five of the team’s nine assists. Joyner handed out two assists. Our four post players combined for 16 of the team’s 25 TOs. Charli had the only block that Texas registered. Jada had four steals while Joyner added three steals.

A new starting lineup debuted to open Big 12 competition. Olamide joined previous starters Sug, Danni, Joyner and Destiny in the starting lineup. This was Olamide’s first start since she arrived at Texas. Sug (32 minutes) and Danni (31 minutes) logged the most time on the court as they have done during the non-conference games. Joyner, Jatarie, Jada and Destiny all logged at least 20 minutes. Olamide, Charli and Audrey played at least ten minutes while Joanne saw action in six minutes.

LINEUPS
Projected lineups are based on the previous game’s starting lineups. Okay, looks like Coach Aston is going to keep us guessing as to who starts in at least two spots.

Martin, Pardee and Davenport have been the big scorers for WVU all season. Our guards will have their hands full stopping those four as well as Niblack off the bench. Neither Smith nor Ekhelar have been big scoring threats this season. Danni will most likely match up with Martin initially as Danni seems to have become our best perimeter defender. Martin, Davenport and Pardee are normally all outstanding 3pt shooters.

The issue for WVU, aside from keeping Danni from getting open looks from BTA, will be matching up with Joyner and our other posts when Texas is on offense. Davenport will probably be assigned to slow down or stop Joyner. Niblack is another option that has a bit more height as does frosh Jala Jordan (#12, 6-2 Fr. F). Our posts should have an opportunity to have a big game in the paint, especially if they can get Ekhlear in foul trouble.

Regardless of how poorly WVU scored in their first league game, both teams like to run. This could be a game where the shot clock is not a big factor. Kinda of interesting to find Texas second in 3pt FG% after one league game. ISU is far away the leader with 48.5% from BTA on 16 of 33 treys in one game.

Both teams will be looking to revert back to doing well some things that went haywire in the first conference game. WVU will be looking to revert back to their ability to hit the 3 (38.7%) going into conference play after hitting only 33.3% against TCU. Texas will be looking to cut down TOs back to their 15.9 average instead of the 25 they had against OSU. Horns would like to their threes around the same as they connected against OSU (38.5%) rather than their non-conference average of 31.1%. Both would probably like to see their 2pt shooting go back to non-conference averages. Texas hit 52% inside the arc prior to making only 32.6% versus OSU. WVU made 49% of their 2pters before playing TCU and only hitting 36.8% for their 2pters.

Game time is 3 PM CST on Sunday, Jan. 06, 2019. The game will be on ESPN2 and online on WatchESPN (ESPN3). Craig Way and Kathy Harston will be on radio on 150.3 FM.

No. 13 Women's Basketball preview: at West Virginia - University of Texas Athletics
The Longhorns are 5-0 away from home this season.

Slightly off-topic. Which coach makes you cringe more when you see them screaming at their own players? Mike Carey or Bill Fennelly?

I think Carey for me.

I don't like to see any coach scream at their players. Speaking firmly and pointedly, fine, but losing their cool on a player is not cool (and I doubt effective). That was one of the many things I liked about Jody, also Karen. I have never seen them do that.

WVU to Host Texas on ESPN2 - West Virginia University Athletics

Fans can also take advantage of a Family Day deal and purchase four tickets and a $15 concession voucher for $25. Those who wish to participate in the Teddy Bear Toss to benefit local police can bring a stuffed animal and receive free admission.
Single-game tickets are $5 each and $3 for groups of 10 or more when purchased in advance at WVUGAME.com. At the WVU Coliseum ticket window, tickets will be $7 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors and $3 for groups. The discounted online pricing will be available until tip-off of the game. Students receive free admission with a valid WVU ID...."They're a very good basketball team," coach Mike Carey said. "That's why they're ranked so high. They have good size, they have good guards, they have quickness. They play extremely hard. We'll have to play the best game of the year to be in there with them. It's going to be about the paint and being able to control the paint."

West Virginia women's basketball team set to host Texas
Texas coach Karen Aston expects a rugged matchup in Morgantown. West Virginia is holding opponents to 30-percent shooting, second-best in the Big 12.

“You kind of always know what you get when you play them,” she said. “They have great, great guards who can score the basketball and they’re very physical. It will be a good experience, and an enlightening one, for our young players.”

Man what a sloppy low scoring game so far. Nobodys shooting good on either team. Doesn't seem like either team really wants this thing.

Man, another dang thriller I could have done without. Thank goodness for Sug in the first half. Our posts were trying to be like guards, not post players.

Nice to see both Danni and Destiny hit from BTA in the second half. Sug sure need the help. Olamide and, especially Joyner, remembered that they were taller than any WVU player guarding them and had a nice scoring second half.

Another long non scoring stretch late in the last quarter to allow WVU to close the gap from 18 down. And some silly TOs where the WVU player just simply took the ball out of the Texas player's hands.

But, all of that and the Horns prevail, 70-58, to get their first Big 12 road win and go to 2-0 in league play.

OU is coming to town next Wednesday.

As others asked, I also wonder why Charli did not play. I thought this was a perfect game to get her some experience, especially in the first half when Coach Aston was searching for an effective post.

Good to see the team get a win on the road where it’s always difficult to win. The post play has been an issue with not being very physical and trying to play like guards now for a couple of years. Again, good that they got the win because we know Oklahoma always plays Texas tough.

A win very similar to OSU but not as many turnovers on our part. Good shooting by Littleton and aggressive attacking by Sutton... Always good to get a road win in Big 12 play.

Gotta give OU hope, though, the way twice the Horns have built up a big lead only to let the opponent come back in the fourth.

I didn't comment on the OSU game because I was so frustrated with the coaching staff. That near-loss (OSU) was because of coaching. The spark in the second half against WVU, was because of coaching. So, I have to give that to them.

The commentators kept pointing out that Texas has the height advantage and why weren't they playing a low post game? I think this year won't be that type of team. The Imani-Kelsey, the Kelsey-Joyner, the Jatarie-Joyner type of game we were pretty good at the last few years seems to be chucked out the window.

Was it Joyner's hurt ankle? Is it that Jatarie seems much slower this year? Is it that our point guards aren't the same this year? Maybe all three.

I just know that Sug is my least favorite ball handler since the Celina Rodrigo days. Having the ball just snatched out of your hands or losing the ball while trying to cross mid-court just drives me Kray-kray.

Sug was one of three players, iirc, that WVU did that to. And, I think Destiny did one of her dropping the ball behind her as she goes by her teammate on that play. Almost led to another TO when she did the same thing earlier.

I need to watch the replay at 9 PM tonight to watch for those plays specifically as they did not replay them during the game. They sure were head-scratching kinda of plays.

Yeah, our inability to get the ball to the bigs inside is really frustrating. Could it be that T.Jackson isn't as good a coach as T.Thompson? Perhaps our guards just aren't capable of making those plays. One thing for sure, Sug Sutton needs to be taking more shots.

IMO the guards outside of Sug have had an issue with post entry passes and the inability to get the ball to them inside. They really need to work on and improve in that area. And Sug does have a tendency to be very loose with the ball at times.

It would really help if the posts actually set up inside and presented a target for the guards. Unfortunately, that did not happen in the first half. Much better doing that in the second half with better results in getting the ball in scoring position.

I wasn't criticizing the post players, but rather the coaches' offensive approach. We don't seem to be running an offense that capitalizes on our size advantage...

Hard to capitalize on our post advantage when the posts turn the ball over, can't finish at the rim or miss short jumpers. All of which happened every time the posts were targeted in the first half of the WVU game. Eleven touches, zero points. And that's not counting the two 3s Joyner attempted. Different story in the second half when Jatarie, Olamide and Joyner combined for 17 points on 17 touches, ten in the fourth quarter.

The offense works when our posts score.

The post play... Not finishing at the rim and turning the ball over... is very frustrating to watch. I know Charli still needs to be more physical, but she's not going to get that way from the bench watch those playing in front of her sling the ball up off the backboard.

It really angers me that she did not play one second against WVU with all the lackluster post play going on. She was very aggressive offensively when the season started... Now, when she does get to play, she looks like every ounce of the confidence she showed at the beginning of the season has been sucked out of her. Run this one off, KA, and I'm done.

I echo brnkj's concern. What is up with Charli not getting in for even one minute, especially after already having essentially been suspended for an earlier game? This is most disturbing with our history of Chaz and Rellah leaving for lack of playing time (and Destiny almost leaving). (Rellah's case may have had complications we weren't apprised of.) Charli needs to be the future for us. She has a lot of potential. Her size, a pretty good shooting touch, and her free throw shooting alone. I guess Nalyssa Smith is further along than Charli in her ability to hold her own on the block, but Charli may have just as much potential. Their college experience so far seems to be exactly opposite.

@JoeDallas I can't fully express the reasons I am so upset over this issue, because what I don't want to do is take away anything from other players. But I will say that Charli's skill set, upside, and potential are matched on this team ONLY by Sedona (who we all know is unavailable this season).

Why in the world we would not be grooming her and getting her ready is mind blowing... especially given how our post play has been. I suppose it's more of the old "tear 'em down and build 'em back up" routine that has NOT served us very well.

On a side note... Jatarie seems to have lost some of her confidence as well. KA's whole philosophy and approach is outdated and ineffective. Kids are different these days...they come in highly skilled. As a coach you should be able to FIND A WAY to put them on the floor and get them some experience while they're going through their learning curve.

Baylor only beat TTU by 16 or 17 points because they playinged their freshmen to log lots of minutes. I can't force myself to be a Baylor fan, but I sure can watch them in appreciation. Yes, she's a pistol on the sidelines that irritates s lot of people, but Mulkey is in a completely different coaching realm than Aston will ever be. One needs to look no further than her record against KA and the development of Baylor's talent compared to ours. I bet Queen Egbo is glad right about now.
