Fresh off the upset of Stanford, # 6 (AP)/# 1 (Coaches), the Horns (2-0) will help UCLA open their home schedule this Sunday. This will be the first home game of the season for the 0-2 Bruins. This is another series with a PAC 12 team that Texas is behind in. UCLA holds a 6-4 edge going into the 11th meeting between the two teams. Texas is ranked 10th in the AP and 13th in the coaches polls. UCLA is receiving votes in the AP poll and not ranked in the coaches poll. After that monumental upset of Stanford on Thursday, Horns will seek to avoid the let down against an unranked UCLA who will be seeking their own statement win.

The Bruins have three players in double figures with Nirra Fields (# 21, 5-6 Jr. G) the main scorer at 23.5 ppg. Lajahna Drummer (# 11. 6-1 Fr. F) averages 13.0 ppg while fellow freshman Jordin Canada (# 3, 5-6 Fr. G) checks in at 12.0 ppg. Seven players have reached double figure FG attempts led by Fields 16-40 (40.0%). No other Bruin has reached double digits in FGs made. Drummer, coming off the bench in both games, has the second most made FGs and leads in FG % (7-10; 70.0%). Monique Billings (# 25, 6-4 Fr. F) has the second highest shooting percentage at 66.7% (6-9). Canada joins those three as the only Bruins making at least 40% from the field as she is at 40.0% on 6-15 shooting. Three UCLA players have made 3pters in their two games. Fields leads in 3s made and attempted with 5-15 (33.3%) from BTA. Kari Korver (# 2, 5-9 RS Soph. G) has hit 3 of 10 treys (30.0%). Paulina Hersler (# 24, 6-3 RS Fr. F) is 1 of 2 (50.0%) from BTA. UCLA is shooting an even worse percentage than the Horns from BTA. UCLA is at 22.5% while Texas is at 26.1%. Six players have reached the FT line for UCLA. Five are hitting at least 71% with the sixth at 60.0%. Fields (10-14; 71.4%), Drummer (12-13; 92.3%) and Canada (12-14; 85.7%) have reached double figures in FTs made and attempted. The Bruins are hitting 79.3% of their FTs as a team.

No Bruin has reached double figures in rebounding average but they have five players that average at least 5 rebounds per game. Billings leads the way with an average of 7.5 rpg. Next up are Fields and Canada averaging 7.0 rpg. Drummer throws in 6.0 rpg into the mix. Luiana Livulo (# 13, 6-3 Sr. C) adds 5.5 rpg. The top assist leaders are Canada (3.0 apg), Fields (2.5 apg) and Receé Caldwell (# 5, 5-8 Fr. G) 2.0 apg. Canada with four steals tops UCLA in that category. Billings and Livulo with 3 blocks each combine for 66.7% of UCLA’s total blocks.

The Bruins have ten players averaging double figures in average minutes played per game. Fields (38.5 mpg) and Canada (31.5 mpg) are the work horses. Drummer, Korver, Billings, Livulo and Caldwell all average over 20 mpg. Dominque Williams (# 20, 5-8 Soph. G) has played in only one game. Three others on the roster have yet to see the court this season. 6-9 RS Fr. C Savanna Trapp (# 54) is out indefinitely for personal reasons. UCLA has used the same starting lineup in both games this season: Fields, Canada, Korver, Livulo and Kacy Swain (# 10, 6-3 RS Jr. F). The Bruins are incorporating the five freshmen that make up UCLA’s # 1 ranked recruiting class last November.

Through two games, Texas has four players averaging double figures in scoring: Nneka and Kelsey average 13 ppg; Empress is at 11.5 ppg and Ariel averages 11.0 ppg. Three others average between 8 and 9 ppg. Very balanced scoring from the team. Lilley leads the team with a 100% from the field on 1-1 shooting. Three others are making over 60% from the field: Nneka (12-17; 70.6%), Brady (2-3; 66.7%) and Kelsey (13-21; 61.9%). Only Empress with 22 FGs attempted has taken more shots than Kelsey. Six players have hit double digits in FGs attempted. Ariel and Brooke (both 2-5; 40.0%) have been the main threats from BTA. Brianna has hit the only 3pter she has attempted while Celina is 1-2 from BTA. Those four are the only Horns to connect from BTA. Ariel (10-10) and Nekia (2-2) are prefect from the FT line. Empress (5-9; 55.6%) and Brady (5-7; 71.4%) have the second most made FTs on the team. Ariel leads in FTs made and attempted. Empress is second in FTs attempted. In two games, Nneka and Kelsey have attempted a total of 4 FTs combined and made two.Nekia, despite playing in only one game, is tied for third for the most total rebounds with 10 and leads the team in RPG with an average of 10.0 rpg. Kelsey (7.5 rpg), Nneka (6.5 rpg) and Brianna (5.0 rpg) rank second, third and fourth on the team in rebounding average. Brady is the leader in assists per game with 4.0 apg after playing in her first game. Celina (2.5 apg) and Empress (2.0 apg) are second and third in that category. Eight players average at least one assist per game. Nine players have at least one steal with Kelsey and Brianna each totaling 3 steals. Kelsey is the leading shot blocker with four while Nneka (2) and Tasia (2) have the other four blocks of the team total of 8. Empress with 9 TOs leads the team. No one else has more than four (three players).

Ten players have played in both games. Brady and Nekia have only played in one game each due to injury. Kelsey (30.5 mpg) and Empress (30.0 mpg) lead a group of nine players that average at least 16 mpg. Krystle at 9.5 mpg just misses making it ten players averaging double digit minutes per game. Nneka, Kelsey, Empress and Ariel have started both games. Celina and Krystle have started one game each at the PG position.

Projected starting lineups are based on the last game’s starting lineup.

Texas UCLA

Nneka (6-1 Sr. F) Swain (6-3 RS Jr. F)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Livulo (6-3 Sr. C)
Ariel (5-11 Fr. G) Korver (5-9 RS Soph. )
Empress (5-7 Jr. G) Fields (5-9 Jr. G)
Celina (5-8 Jr. G) Canada (5-6 Fr. G)
[/pre]

Fields has been the main scorer for the Bruins in their first two games. Empress will get first shot at slowing her down. Brianna should get a chance as well although Fields will likely see a number of players defending her. Canada is the first of the five freshmen to start although Drummer, Billings and Caldwell have made an impact coming off the bench. UCLA will have their hands full with Kelsey and Nneka as long as those two stay out of foul trouble. Drummer is the most effective post offensively for the Bruins. 43.5 pts of the Bruins scoring comes from the starting backcourt. That’s 56% of the total. By contrast, Texas’ starting backcourt five averages 24.0 ppg or 31%. The Texas bench average 36 ppg, 46.5% of the total. With Drummer contributing 13 pts, the Bruins bench adds 25 ppg, 32.3% of the total. Team defense will be key for Texas in at least slowing down Fields. Patience on the offense end if the fast break is not there will help Texas in getting open shots and in getting the ball in to Kelsey and Nneka.

SCORE BY PERIODS: 1st 2nd OT Total

Texas
74 69 12 155
UCLA
80 63 12 155

Both teams are averaging the same number of points per game. The results have been different as UCLA is 0-2 and Texas is 2-0. The difference? UCLA is giving up ten more points than they score while Texas holds teams to 13 points less than their average. UCLA has been taking 20 threes a game but only hitting about one out of five. Texas is not doing much better, making about one out of four. One thing that UCLA has been able to do is get to the FT line and convert. They are 29 FTs a game and making 23. For a change, Texas is averaging less turnovers than opponents. Even better, the Horns are under 20 turnovers a game, averaging 18. The Bruins have been prone to turning the ball over which could help the Horns get the edge in fastbreak points. The Horns’ pressure defense should give the Bruins problems. Both teams will run up to ten players in and out although UCLA has relied on Fields and Canada heavily. Texas is more balanced in the minutes players average. Look for the Horns to feed the posts who will either score or kick it out to the open shooter. As long as Kelsey and Nneka stay out of foul trouble, look for them to play 30+ minutes and dominate inside.

Ariel and Brooke showed no signs of nerves against Stanford. While they may still be up and down at times, the learning curve seems to be getting easier for them. Tasia had some of those down moments in the game. I look for her to come back strong against UCLA. Our bench was impressive. To close out the OT period, iirc, our lineup had only one starter on the floor. Of course, both Nneka and Empress had fouled out but Ariel, Brooke, Brady, Brianna and Kelsey closed it out in high style.

The game will be on the PAC 12 Network. Guess we will find out at game time which PAC 12 channel it is on. Game time is 3pm CST. Radio will once again be on the 103.1 iHeart Austin.

Just as an FYI, the VB team will be hosting Kansas this Saturday at 3 PM. The game will be on the LHN. This is the next to last home game of the season.

Note: Nekia will be out for this game as well as missing the Stanford game. Hope she heals soon.

preview box from the AAS. They can't wait for the game as they have it listed as being played today. Can't blame them. I can't wait for it, either.

getting ready to tipoff. Kinda disappointed it is not the main PAC12 channel. Found it on TWC 377-PAC12 Arizona.

Go, Horns! No letdown!!

good, streamer says UT-UCLA game will be showing on main PAC12 channel once the VB game between Oregon and S Cal is done. Oregon up 2-1 in sets and 21-18 in the fourth set.

Horns posts struggling early to hit their shots although Kelsey just sank a short jumper to bring Texas to 13-14. UCLA ran a couple of backdoor plays to give them the 14 pts before Kelsey's jumper.

cheez, the announcers are not really talking about what is going on the court but about UCLA's #1 class and the problems they are having adjusting.

Wow, stats show Vanderzee, Foman and McCarty all in together, along with Brady and Empress. Good stuff, love to see a lot of different players getting time on the court.

up and down. Texas up 19-18. Empress, I think, will be shooting FTs. Lilley in to give Kelsey a breather. currently a timeout so Kelsey could be back in after the timeout. Lilley doing a good job blocking out Costa.

wow, quick recovery by Caldwell to block that 2-1 breakaway by the Horns. Horns missing too many shots. Still up 27-20.

Ariel just picked up her second foul with 5 to go. puts her out of the game and UCLA gets two FTs. 27-22 Texas.

Texas had another 3 just off. time out with 3:25 to go and Horns up 29-24. announcers did not say who got the ball on that tie ball. UCLA is in the bonus. Horns have hit on just 1-8 in their last 8 shots.

Texas is really small with no one taller than 5-10 on the court other than Kelsey. Having trouble rebounding. Brooke hit a 3.

wow, UCLA stole the ball on the inbound pass with less than 2 seconds left and missed. Texas led by Brooke (9 pts), Kelsey (8 pts) and Ariel (8 pts). Horns lead at the half 37-32. Brooke with 3 of 4 treys. Nobody on either team has reached double figures. Horns at 34% (14-41) while UCLA is at 41% (13-31). Horns have hit 4-10 from BTA while UCLA is 2-12. From the FT line, Horns are 5-6 (83%) with UCLA at 4-6 (67%). Texas leading rebounding 26-18.

Nneka, Ariel and Brady will start the second half with two fouls each. Canada and Drummer also have two fouls each. Neither team is turning the ball over, Texas has four TOs, UCLA five. UCLA is outblocking Texas 5-1.
