Tenn leads the series 18-12. Tenn is 8-5 at Knoxville. 8-6 at Austin and 2-1 in neutral sites.

Horns won in Austin last December by . That win broke a three game Lady Vol winning streak. Horns will be looking to add to that win. The Horns have had two four game winning streaks in the series, 1982 through 1985 and 2002 through 2004 (there were games on 02/12/02 and 12/21/02). Tenn has had a 13 game winning streak that started on 01/20/90 with the last win on 12/22/00 when the last Texas four game win streak began. In the game last season, neither team shot well but Texas took advantage from the FT line to pull out the win. Tenn was 21-63 (33.3%) from field, 6-20 (30%) from BTA and 11-24 (45.8%) from the FT line. Texas hit on 24-65 (36.9%) from the field, 5-17 (29.4%) from BTA, and 20-29(69%) from the FT line. The Horns pulled out a 73-59 win to break the Lady Vol’s 3 game winning streak in the series. Tenn was led by Glory Johnson with 13 pts and Angie Bjorklund with 11 pts. Brit with 21 pts and Kat with 12 pts led the Horns. All four players return for this game.

The Lady Vols are led by three players in double figures. Shekinna Stricklen (#40, 6-2 Soph. G/F, 16.0 ppg), Glory Johnson (#25, 6-3 Soph. F, 14.7 ppg) and Angie Bjorklund (#5, 6-0 Jr. G/F, 14.7 ppg) have started all six games for the Lady Vols. Taber Spani (#13, 6-1 Fr. F) is averaging 9.7 ppg and has started the last five games. Kelley Cain (#52, 6-6 RS Soph. C) adds 8.4 ppg and 8.6 rpg. She started the first five games but was kept of the George Washington game due to a concussion. She could be available to play Sunday. In her absence, Briana Bass (#1, 5-2 Soph. G) got the call to start. Stricklen and Johnson join Cain in averaging over 8 rpg at 8.3 each. Alyssia Brewer (#33, 6-3 Soph. F) and Alicia Manning (#15, 6-1 Soph. F) who has started one game are each averaging double digit minutes along with Bass. Kamiko Williams (#4, 5-11 Fr. G) and Sydney Smallbone (#20, 5-10 Jr. G) have played in five games for an average of just over nine minutes per game. Cain’s 9 blocks is tops for the team. Johnson with 14 steals is the only Lady Vol with double digit steals. Three players have gotten to the FT line at least 20 times. Stricklen leads with 27-29 (93.1%). Johnson is at 76.9% (20-26) while Spani is hitting 70% (14-20). If the Horns do want to put a Lady Vol on the FT line in a close game, they will be looking for Brewer (1-5, 20%) or Cain (8-19, 42.1%).Bjorklund is the primary 3pt threat (20-44, 45.5%). Spani is also solid from BTA (6-17, 35.3%). Stricklen is in a very slump, hitting only 3-20 (15%) from BTA. Smallbone is the only other Lady Vol that has taken at least 10 3s to date (2-10, 20%). Stricklen (33-80, 41.3%) and Bjorklund (32-72, 44.4%) are the most likely to take a shot. Johnson is outstanding this year, hitting 34-56 (60.7%) from the field. Brewer has taken about a third as many shots (16-22) as Johnson but is also hitting a very high percentage at 72.7%.

While the Lady Vols have 13 players on the roster, only 10 are available at this time as Faith Dupree (#34, Fr. F/C) and Amber Gray (#10, 6-1 Soph. F) are redshirting this year. Dupree has back problems and Gary is recovering from, first shoulder surgery, and a stroke suffered shortly afterwards. Vicki Baugh (#6-4 Jr. F) could return this year after successful ACL surgery in Feb. 24, 2009.

Texas is led by three players in double figures: Kat (14.6 ppg), Brit (14.1 ppg) and Ashleigh (10.0 ppg). Erika is just below double digits at 8.7 ppg. In the post, Ashley and Cokie are combing for 12.8 ppg, 7 steals, 30 blocks (Ashley has 20), 10 assists, and 11.1 rpg. They also have 19 TOs (2.7 pg) each. Ashleigh and Erika top the team with 10 and 9 steals, respectively. Three players have at least 14 assists: Ashleigh (25), Brit (19) and Erika (14). Kat and Yvonne have 9 assists each. Kat is the leading rebounder at 7.3 rpg while Ashley’s 6.1 rpg is second on the team. Seven Horns have been to the FT line at least 14 times. Brit’s 25-32 (78.1%) tops the team in all three categories. Ashley (17-31, 54.8%) and Cokie (13-21, 61.9%) rank second and third respectively in all three categories. Kat and Kristen are an identical 11-15 (73.3%) from the FT line. Kat (15-29, 51.7%) and Erika (13-41, 31.7%) are the top 3pt threats for the Horns. Erika is coming of the ORU game where she hit 7-12 from BTA. Brit (6-19, 31.6%) and Ashleigh (6-18, 33.3%) can also connect from long distance.Four players for the Horns have taken 264 of the team’s 432 FG attempts. That’s 61.1% for the FG attempted. Fittingly, they are the top four scorers for the Horns. Kat has taken 79 shots , Ashleigh 59 with two others in between. That will make it difficult for Tenn to focus on just one or two players to shut down because the others can make them pay.

Like UConn, Tenn is big and physical. They will come hard. The Horns, though can match the height and physicality. Which team can force the other into poor shooting and which team can get to the FT line and capitalize when there is the one likely to win this game. It should a hard played and physical game. If Ashley and Cokie can stay out of foul trouble, they will make it difficult for Tenn to score inside. If Tenn can get them in foul trouble, Horns will have trouble staying on the boards with the Lady Vols.

projected starters:
[pre]
Texas Tennessee

Ashleigh Bass/Cain
Erika Bjorklund
Earnie Spani
Kat Stricklen
Ashley Johnson[/pre]

I’m being optimistic, but I think this Horn team can pull out a win in Knoxville. It will be interesting to see how our post players handle one of the better front lines in the college ranks. Can Tenn handle, not one but two outstanding 3pt shooters on the court at the same time? There will be times when the Horns will have Kat, Erika, Brit and Ashleigh on the court with all four able hit the open 3.

Thx Babhorn.

If our defense is solid and our shots are falling this should be a good game. We win by 3. If not TN wins by 15. TN is coming into there own. They are learing how to play together and play both ends of the floor. By March they will be scary good. I love these teams playing. I look forward to this game every year - my FAVORITE two WCBB teams.

While I would love to be wrong, I think we are looking at a 20 point plus blowout loss. In the ORU game all that kept the team from losing was a huge advantage on the boards and Erika getting hot. No way TX out rebounds TN, and TN perimeter defense is much better than anything the team has seen thus far. TX turns over the ball way too frequently and cannot shoot free throws - a sure recipe for a loss at TBA, a very tough place to play. To pull the upset, the team needs to harass whomever is playing point for TN, limit turnovers and shoot close to 50%. I am hoping for the win, but would put the odds very low. If Cain plays, and plays well, Reed and Gayle need to stay out of trouble and step up big time.

Coaches G & Summitt to wear pink hats during the game Sunday in support of the Kay Yow fund. A $10 thousand donation from various coaches will make sure it happens.

to both coaches.

Reed and Gayle must be big inside to come away with a win and Raven needs to bring her A game. We need to take what comes to us from BTA and not jack up a bunch of ill-advised three pointers that result in long rebounds and transition baskets for TENN.

While I do not expect Tennessee to blow us out unless we really don't even show up for the game.....wins in Knoxville are scarcer
than hen's teeth....I am not predicting a win, but if we lose, I want it to be no more than by a single digit.

From the Knoxville News Sentinel, a couple of articles related to the game:

on the Lady Vols and their zone defense;

and one on the pink hats

Lady Vol center Kelley Cain, who missed Tenn's last game due to concussion, will be a game time decision on her avialability to play today.

Cokie needs to make her FT'S.....she will be getting a bunch, and we need the points...

And why don't we get loose balls?

Come ON, tEXAS.....GO RAVEN!!

Turnovers, missed lay ups and missed free throws are killing us! the team needs to get it together fast. This one is on the verge of getting beyond reach.

Terrible first half of play for the Horns. Can we BUY a few baskets for the 2nd half????!!!! Please!!!

One of my keys to playing well was not jacking up a bunch of ill-advised 3 pointers...we are 1-9 so far.

Has Kat even scored? I hope the halftime plan is to try getting her some open looks. She's doing a good job rebounding, but help GET HER OPEN to score!!

This is the worst I have seen this team play, ever.

They are hitting NOTHING, and just look horrible...no rebounding, and those stupid traps Gail keeps having them run do NOT work, it leaves someone open every time...Just sucks...

Ahh, well. Certainly not the game I expected from them. The inconsistency in scoring from game to game is very frustrating. Horns have a long road to get to UConn's & Tenn's level consistently. Still, I liked Ashley's fight on the boards and Kristen's work as well as Lauren's play at PG. Can't believe how many layups they blew. Seemed like their confidence went down with each missed layup.

Can't wait to see how they rebound from this beating. They need to come back strong going into conference play. Well, it's a good time to go to Ft. Worth for some fun and relaxation since the Horns don't have a game for 10 days.

Go, Horns. It's a learning experience this early. As Coach Summitt said, there's nothing lost in pre conference games.

OK Folks. After the helter skelter effort against ORU, this blowout loss was clearly on the cards. We lost to a very good TN team tonight. The good news is we gave them a ton of help. Shooting has been a problem for this team for at least the last five years. We have one truly elite player - Brittany Raven. Kat Nash and Erika Arriaran will do fine against lesser teams but cannot create their own shots against top level defenders. Flores and Fontenette are gamers, but we are young and weak in the post. We are a top part of the middle of the pack Big 12 team. We will probably make the tournament, but I predict another 1st or 2nd round loss in the NCAA's. We played TN close for the 1st half of the 1st half. Less talented teams have done better. I dunno how you teach discipline and focus but that is what this team needs. Cokie needs endless footwork drills. And the wild passes need to stop. And AT needs to finish on fast break penetration. I thought Kristen played tough and Kat was smart enough to realize that she could not shoot against this TN team. Edub is all hustle, but is way out of her league against the athletes of TN. Against top teams, I think Coach G needs to play Raven and the underclassmen, and then let Kat and Erika go off against lesser competition. And lay-up drills until exhaustion . . . We are obviously 20-25 points away from being an elite team, but the Big 12 is down (again) this year and I think we will do respectably in conference. There is a long way to go to get to the top echelon of WCBB. Coach G is paid bug bucks to work out how. For me the jury is still out, but if by next year we are still not remotely competitive with the likes of UConn and TN . . . Hook 'em for the rest of the season and I hope everyone on the team aces their exams1
