Stanford and Texas will meet on the court for the ninth time since 1981.
Texas took the first two games. Stanford has won the last six. The Horns
will look to break Stanford’s 28 home game winning streak. In the AP
rankings, turned in before the Stanford-UConn game Monday evening,
the Cardinal are 6th while Texas is 10th. The ESPN coaches poll, taking
into account Stanford’s win over UConn, jumped the Cardinal from 6th
to first. The Horns are ranked 13th.

Stanford came into this season with a new offense, 2 starters and 12
letterwinners. Those two starters are important in the new offense as
they comprise the starting backcourt from last season. They will be
integral to the new guard-oriented, fast-paced, pick-and-roll offense.
Stanford still has a big number of tall posts with seven players 6-2 or
better. Erica Payne (# 25, 6-2 Sr. F) is the shortest post. Tess Picknell
(# 34, 6-5 Jr. F/C) is the tallest. Taylor Greenfield (# 4, Sr. F), Kailee
Johnson (# 32, Soph. F), Kaylee Johnson (# 5, Fr. F), Erica McCall
(# 24, Soph. F) and Bonnie Samuelson (# 41, Sr. F) all check in at 6-3.
Amber Orrange (# 33, 5-7 Sr. G) and Lili Thompson (# 1, 5-7 Soph. G)
are the returning backcourt duo. Karlie Samuelson (# 44, 6-0 Soph. G),
Briana Roberson (# 10, 5-7 Soph. G) and Alex Green (# 00, 5-6 RS Jr. G)
are the other three guards that have played in both games along with
Orrange and Thompson. Picknell and Payne join Brittany McPhee
(# 12, 6-0 Fr. G), Taylor Rooks (# 31, 6-0 Fr. G) and Jasmine Camp
(# 23, 5-7 RS Jr. G) in having played in one game. Of the 15 players
on the roster, ten have played in both games: five posts and five guards.

In two games, the Cardinal are averaging 92 ppg. They have three players
averaging in double figures. Thompson leads the trio with an average of
25.0 ppg. Orrange adds 14.0 ppg and McCall 11.0 ppg. Stanford is hitting
a stunning 56.8% from the field and 51.9% from BTA. That makes their
FT percentage of 66.7% rather pedestrian by comparison. Thompson and
Orrange average over 10 shots a game, hitting 65.4% and 57.1%, respectively.
Thompson (4-7, 57.1%), Bonnie Samuelson (2-6, 33.3%) and Karlie
Samuelson (3-4, 75.0%) have been the main 3pt shooters for the Cardinal
in their first two games. Thompson’s 19 FT attempts lead the team by a
wide margin. Bonnie Samuelson and Kaylee Johnson with 6 each are
second. Thompson has hit 12 FTs while Bonnie Samuelson joins two
others who are perfect from the line.

Kaylee Johnson is the top rebounder at 8.5 rpg with Orrange second at 7.0
rpg. Orrange is the assist leader in assists with an average of 5 per game.
Karlie Samuelson has five assists to rank second on the team. Kailee
Johnson is the top shotblocker with four in two games. Orrange has five
steals while Thompson and Kailee Johnson each has swiped three. Orrange
(35.5 mpg), Karlie Samuelson (29.5 mpg), Thompson (28.0 mpg) and
Kaylee Johnson (25.0 mpg) are the only four to average over 20 mpg. Of
the ten players that have played in every game, nine average at least ten
mpg. The tenth, Alex Green, averages 5.5 mpg. The starting lineup has
been the same for the first two games, both wins. Thompson, Orrange,
McCall, Greenfield and Kaylee Johnson have been the starters. The rotation
runs ten deep with the other five having played in the first game but not
against UConn.

After the first game of the season, Kelsey is the leading scorer for Texas
with 12 pts. Brianna (11 pts) and Empress (10 pts) join her with double
digit scoring. Kelsey and Nneka share the top shooting percentage at 66.7%
with Kelsey going 6-9 and Nneka 4-6. Brianna was the top shooter among
the frontcourt players, hitting 5-10 FGs. She was 1-1 from BTA with Brooke(1-2) making the other 3 the Horns hit. Empress got to the FT line a teamhigh seven times, making 4. Ariel (4-4), Nekia (2-2) and Tasia (2-2) start
the season off perfect from the FT line.

Kelsey also leads the team with 3 blocks and 3 steals. Nekia hit double
digits in rebounding with 10. Nneka had 8 while Kelsey and Brianna added
six rebounds each. Nneka and Tasia are tied for second in blocks with two
each. Eight of the 11 players had at least one steal. Nneka Brianna and Celina
each had two.

Between the exhibition game and the first regular season game, Brady injured
her shooting hand and was unable to play. That left the Horns with 11 players.
All played against UTSA. The starting lineup for the first game of the season
was composed of Nneka, Kelsey, Empress, Krystle and Ariel. Ariel played the
most minutes with 27. Brooke, Brianna and Kelsey each were in for 23 minutes.
Empress played 21 minutes. Nneka and Celina notched 18 minutes apiece. Both
Kelsey and Nneka were limited by foul trouble.

Projected starting lineups based on the last game played:

[pre]
Texas Stanford

Nneka (6-1 Sr. F) Johnson , Kaylee (6-3 Fr. F)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Greenfield (6-3 Sr. F)
Ariel (5-11 Fr. G) McCall (6-3 Soph. F)
Empress (5-7 Jr. G) Thompson (5-7 Soph. G)
Krystle (5-4 Sr. G) Orrange (5-7 Sr. G)
[/pre]

For Texas, it will be critical for Kelsey and Nneka to stay on floor. Stanford
will be able to run at least five posts at them while the Texas post depth will not
be able to match that. Nekia and Lilley will be able to give them limited rest
with Kelsey and Nneka needed to do the heavy lifting in the post. Defensively,
the Horns cannot allow Thompson and Orrange to penetrate at will. Of the ten
main players in the Stanford rotation, five are hitting at least 50.0% from BTA.
Texas will need to be very aware of the 3pt shooters. Against UConn, Stanford
hit 7-14 3s with Bonnie Samuelson leading the way with 2-5 from BTA. Texas
will have an advantage in being able to use up to six guards against Stanford’s
four primary guards. The Texas guards will have their hands full stopping the
Cardinal guards penetration and Thompson’s ability to get to the FT line. Stanford
will look to stop Nneka and Kelsey inside. It would not surprise me if they double
Nneka and see if Kelsey can be stopped one on one. The Horns perimeter players
will need to hit more than 16.7% from BTA to open up things inside for their posts.
If Brady is unable to play, Horns are going to miss her 3pt shooting. Even if she
can play, one has to wonder how much the hand injury will affect her shooting.

Both teams will look to run often. Stanford was consistent in penetrating and
finishing against UConn. The rebounding battle will be key in which team is
able to fastbreak. The turnover battle looks to favor Stanford but their backcourt
has a third of their TOs. Orrange was the best Cardinal inswiping the ball from
UConn. The senior will look to turn over the Horn PGs, who did a good job
protecting the ball against UTSA. It will be interesting to see how the rebounding
goes. Stanford was quite effective against UConn while Texas ended up dominating
a smaller UTSA squad. This should be an excellent game for our freshmen to play
in against top competition before Big 12 play.

From the texassports.com site:
Injury Report: Junior center Imani McGee-Stafford (leg) and freshman forward
Diani Akigbogun (knee) will not be active for Thursday's game.

A fun fact from that article: •The Cardinal’s 460 all-time appearances in the AP
top 25 are fourth behind Tennessee (661), Georgia (511) and Texas (471).

The game will on the PAC 12 networks and online at Pac-12 Networks Live. Just have to
keep clicking that “more” button until the game icon shows up. There’s a TV
provider login, so hopefully the online video is free. In Austin, the TWC schedule
shows the game at 8pm on the PAC12 Bay Calif channel: 381. Radio will be:
103.1 iHeart Austin. Kinda surprised that I don’t see KVET 1300 AM listed as
carrying the game. Maybe they will anyway.

Looking forward to Texas playing competitively against Stanford. Not going to be easy playing against the #6/#1 team on their home court. That losing streak has to be broken sometime! A game earmarked as a barometer of sorts for the program for sure.

Coach A has a quality roster with depth and hope she can find the right combination to make Stanford sweat and perhaps result in a W for the Horns.

okay, now TWC is showing the Texas-Stanford on ALL PAC12 channels, starting with the PAC 12 National on 375 through 381 (PAC 12 Bay Calif).

Hopefully, that means a lot more people will be able to see the game.

Just saw on Twitter that Nekia is out due to illness.

well, Brady has been cleared to play. With Nekia out, look for Brady and Ariel to get some time at one of the post along side either of Nneka or Kelsey.

game time! the men are up by 15 with about 2 minutes to go. Doubt if they will blow it.

Time to see how Texas does against Stanford.

two fouls on Orrange. Horns are playing well. Ariel looks like she has lost the nerves. Good rotation on D on the perimeter for the Horns.

I appreciate the information, Babhorn. I can't watch the game, suddenlink doesn't carry to Pac 12 network. Even the live stats link from the schedule is not working, so any specific information about how we are doing and why the score is what it is, would be greatly appreciated.

Ariel beginning to join Empress in scoring. Man, Stanford just keeps hitting 3s, that was a corner 3 off the backcourt. doubt she called it. Horns up 21-16. Ariel just go her second foul.

Nneka and Kelsey need to get more aggressive on the D board. Stanford just taking the offensive rebounds away from them.

Horns up 23-19. Nneka and Kelsey staying out of foul trouble. Kelsey hit a jumper from the left corner of the FT line. Horns may need all their guards if they continue to foul.

Horns going inside and Stanford having trouble stopping Kelsey. On the other hand, they are driving inside and drawing fouls easily. 31-23 Texas.

Brady passed up a short jumper in the lane to make an extra pass and that led to a TO. Need to take that open shot. Our Horns can hit that 6-8 foot jumper most of the time. 31-28 Texas.

Both Orrange and Empress sitting with 3 fouls. Hurts us more as Empress has been our main scorer so far. And Brady with a layup and the emotion.
yippee.gif

god, looks like they are calling us for touch fouls. we are going to need all our guards for sure.
