Texas 32 OU 33 at half. We can win this one and need to do it.
I noticed the same with OU's attendance. Ranked OU versus Texas should be packed. Both athletic departments need to rethink whatever they are doing and get home attendance up.
Overall just sloppy play in the last 5 minutes after solid play the entire rest of the game. This team still has the potential to make a run, but it is going to require Holmes, the only senior, getting out of his funk and stepping up. We are running out of time for that to happen.
So frustrating. This program has had some epic January-February slides, but somehow this one just seems more epic than any of the others. At least this one wasn't a 30-point blowout at home like the other one this season.
I would not say we had a January-February slide this year. The narrative applies to about every year except this one. Taylor got injured in November, we became discombobulated after that struggling at Uconn, losing to Kentucky and Stanford, and just have never really recovered. I do not know if it is due to the concussions or what, but Holmes has not been the same player he has been in the past.
We actually seem be getting our act back together, it is just that it might be too late.
Agree with all these posts--this would be a "good loss" if we weren't already so in the hole needing every possible win.
I thought Holmes would be so good this year--it was all set up for that--but he doesn't look that good right now.
Ibeh and Yancy looked good, and Taylor is getting better. So is Turner. So is Cam.
So, some good things going on, just not quite enough.
I thought Taylor was probably the main reason we lost. You can't have a PG who gives so many opportunities to the other team with missed shots and stalled possessions. Barnes only succeeds if he can stick to a defensive gameplan and allow an All-World PG to play mistake-free ball.
Holmes is not back to his pre concussion level of play, especially on the offensive end. He simply could not get his rhythm shooting. The 3 he made at the end inflated his stats, but the game was over at that point. I think that with a healthy Holmes we win that game. I feel for him. He is such a competitor. He gives it everything. Maybe by the conference tourney he'll be all the way back.
Another thing I think hurt us is that Felix did not get enough looks from the 3 point arc. He was shooting well, but Barnes could not design enough screens, etc. to get Felix the looks he needed. Also, there were way too many times our offense was inept at being able to cut, roll, or alley oop to the hoop to break down ou's D.
Again, Barnes' lack of acumen on the offensive end kept our scoring chances below what a top team needs to attack good defense, especially zone.
Overall, I enjoyed the game. Many lead changes and well fought until the Texas collapse at the end. Holmes is killing us right now. You can blame it on his concussion, but he was struggling before it happened. We really need his senior leadership (in the form of solid play).
I was encouraged to see Miles play well against stiffer competition in a tough road environment. I just don't see why we didn't make more of an effort to get him the ball in the last 3:30 minutes. Taylor was struggling, so our best option to get points in the final possessions. The only time he touched the ball was a put-back attempt. He was fouled and made both free-throws. At this point, he needs to be our go-to guy. Just think back to Durant. No way the ball is not end his hands when we really need a bucket.
The game was lost when we had Felix on the floor when we needed to shut down OU. The man he should have saged off to guard was Spangler who scored easily because no one fronted him, which Felix should have done. Felix was in and Taylor was on the bench for that defensive play. Taylor should have been in the game and Felix should have been on the bench. Felix cannot, or will not, play defense.
