Texas (7-9, 0-5) visits OU (14-3, 4-1) for their second Big 12 game this season. Texas has dropped three games since then while OU has gone 2-1. Texas will be looking to break a five game league losing streak while OU wants to stay at # 2 in the league behind Baylor. Horns will be looking for their first win at OU since Feb. 3, 2010. OU will be seeking to extend a two game home winning streak against the Horns.
OU comes into the return match with Texas with four players scoring in double figures in Big 12 play: Aaryn Ellenberg (# 3, 5-7 Jr. G) averages 21.0 ppg; Sharane Campbell (# 24, 5-10 Soph. G) is at 15.0 ppg; Joanna McFarland (# 53, 6-3 Sr. F) contributes 12.4 ppg and Morgan Hook (# 10, 5-10 Jr. G) adds 11.6 ppg. McFarland (23-33,69.7%) and Campbell (24-50, 48.0%) are the most accurate shooters from the field for OU in league play. Ellenberg (17-47, 36.2%) is OU¡¦s top threat from BTA. Campbell is 5-8 (62.5%) from BTA, with over half her completions coming in the Texas game when she went 3 of 3. OU has four of the top 13 FT shooters in the league in Hook (14-14, 100%), McFarland (13-15, 86.7%), Ellenberg (20-25, 80.0%) and Campbell (19-25, 76.0%).
McFarland tops the team and is second in the league in rebounding at 9.8 rpg. Hook leads with 6.2 assists per game. Ellenberg¡¦s 1.6 steals per game ranks first on the team. Nicole Griffin (# 4, 6-6 Jr. C) tops the team in shot blocking with 2.6 blocks per game. Campbell adds 0.8 blocks per game while Ellenberg and Hook each are at 0.6 bpg.
Both Ellenberg and Hook are averaging 38.2 minutes per game. Those two are joined by McFarland (30.4 mpg), Campbell (34.6 mpg) and Griffin (29.6 mpg) as starters for all of the league games. Jasmine Hartman (# 45, 5-10 Sr. G) averages 14.4 mpg. Portia Durrett (# 31, 6-1 Jr. F) is the top frontcourt reserve and averages 10.6 mpg. Nicole Kornet (# 1, 6-1 Fr. G/F) adds 6.0 mpg. All eight have played in all five Big 12 games for the Sooners.
Horns have three players in double figures: Nneka (12.6 ppg), Chassidy (11.8 ppg) and Imani (10.4 ppg). Ashley and Empress are both averaging just over 7 ppg. Those five are the top five in FGs made and attempted. Nneka and Chassidy are tied with 56 FGs attempted while Chassidy (24) and Imani (23) have made the most FGs. Sara (5-10, 50%) is the only Horn making at least 50% of her shots. Imani (47.9%) is second on the team in FG%. From BTA, Chassidy is 7-28 (25%) while Ashley (9-22, 40.9%) and Gigi (2-5, 40%) are the other main 3pt threats for Texas. Nneka (15-21, 71.4%) is the only player to have reached double digits in FTs made and attempted. Brady¡¦s 6-6 from the FT line leads the team while Ashley (4-5, 80%) and Chassidy (6-8, 75%) are other top FT shooters.
Imani just misses averaging a double double in league with 9 rpg to go with her 10.4 ppg. Nneka is second at 6.8 rpg while Chassidy (5.5 rpg) and Empress (5.2 rpg) offer strong support on the boards. Empress tops the team with 17 assists. Celina is second with 12 assists. Imani (9) and Chassidy (4) lead the team in blocks. Chassidy also tops the team in steals with 8 while Nneka, Ashley and Celina each have six steals. Brady has five steals.
Nine players have gotten into Big 12 games. Chassidy (34.8 mpg), Empress (34.8 mpg) and Nneka (31.0 mpg) top the team in minutes played. Imani, Ashley, Sara, Brady and Celina all average double digit minutes while Gigi has been increasing her minutes and now averages 9 mpg. The starters for the last game were Chassidy, Nneka, Imani, Empress and Ashley. Nneka, Empress and Imani have started all five Big 12 games while Chassidy has started all four games she has been available for. Ashley has started four of the five league games while Celina has one start.
Projected starters based on the last game:
Texas OU
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) McFarland (6-3 Sr. F)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Griffin (6-6 Jr. C)br>Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Ellenberg (5-7 Jr. G)Ashley (5-8 Jr. G) Hook (5-10 Jr. G)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Campbell (5-10 Soph. G)
In the first game, Ellenberg, Hook and Campbell played 40. 38 and 38 minutes, respectively. They scored 59 of OU¡¦s 78 pts with all three hitting 3 threes each. Campbell led the way with 24 pts. Campbell hurt the Horns, not just with her outside shooting but with her ability to get to the FT line and convert, going 7-9 from there. The Horns¡¦ focus on Ellenberg kept her in check for most of the game and made her work for her points. That left Hook and Campbell open to his 7-10 and 7-11 from the field, respectively, including each going 3-3 from BTA. While the focus should remain with slowing or stopping Ellenberg first, the Horns cannot afford to lose track of Hook and Campbell.
The Horns had success going inside but showed a balance offense as Nneka, Imani, Empress and Chassidy all were in double figures in scoring. The difference was OU¡¦s 3pt shooting and ability to convert from the FT line. Texas dominated in rebounding and got 21 pts of 27 offensive rebounds. But Texas was only able to make 3-13 3s to OU¡¦s 11-17 and suffered from a poor shooting night at the FT line at 7-13 while OU hit on 13-17. Horns will look for Nneka to have a better shooting game than her 7-18 in the first game.

The first game got away from Texas during a five minute stretch from 12:24 to 7:39 when OU stretched a four lead to 18 pts. Texas missed seven shots and committed four TOs during those five minutes. Since then, Texas continues to average just over 20 TOs a game. Texas will need to take advantage of their ability to score inside. They will also need to continue the improved FT shooting they have displayed the last three when they have gone 38-50 for 76%. Texas will also have to decrease their TOs from the 25.5 they have averaged the last two games. Those TOs have contributed to having opponents get more than ten extra shots.
The Texas posts have played well. Texas guards will need to handle the pressure that OU will bring as well as play strong and smart defensively to keep OU from getting uncontested shots. Empress played her best overall game against OU, going primary against Ellenberg on defense and matching with either Hook or Campbell on defense. Screens will be important against OU to get the Horns looks on the perimeter. Empress was able to penetrate against OU and penetration by the guards will help in getting the others open looks.
