Texas at Kansas
Horns (15-8; 4-8) travel to Kansas (13-12; 4-8) still looking for their first road win. This will be their seventh road game. Kansas is 2-4 in Big 12 home games. Horns lead the series 17-10. They have won the last four games, including sweeping the season series last year. They beat Kansas in Austin on Jan. 3, 2015 and will be looking for another season sweep this year on Saturday. Both teams will be looking to snap losing streaks. Kansas has lost their last two games. Texas has lost their last four games and is winless on the road (0-6) in league play.
Chelsea Gardner (# 15, 6-3 Sr. F) is Kansas’s top scorer (16.2 ppg) and rebounder (8.6 rpg). That puts her among the top five in the conference in both categories. Joining her with double digits scoring averages are Natalie Knight (# 42, 5-7 Sr. G) at 11.5 ppg and Asia Boyd (# 0, 6-1 Sr. G) at 10.3 ppg. Boyd is the top scorer off the bench. Gardner and Caelynn Manning-Allen (# 25, 6-4 Soph. F) are the leaders in FG% at 56.6% and 52.0%, respectively. They are the only two over 50% from the field. Gardner (82-145) and Knight (50-135, 37.0%) rank one and two in FGs made and attempted. Add in Boyd’s 94 FG attempts and those three have taken 374 of the team’s 611 FG attempted. Knight is the top 3pt threat, having made 24 of a team 74 3pt attempts (32.4%). Lauren Aldridge (#3, 5-7 Fr. G) is second in both categories with 17 makes on 48 treys attempted (35.4%). Terriell Bradley (# 23, 5-10 Fr. G) is the most accurate Jayhawk from BTA, hitting 47.6% of her treys (10-21). Four of the five players that have double digit FT attempts are making at least 71% of their FTs. Boyd (30-42; 71.4%) and Gardner (30-41; 73.2%) have stepped up to the FT line the most and are tied for the most FTs made. Aldridge tops that group of five with a percentage of 76.0%.
Gardner leads in eight categories, including rpg (8.6 rpg) and blocks (24). Knight (5.3 rpg) and Boyd (4.6 rpg) are the other main rebounders for theJayhawks. Kansas has two players averaging over 4.0 apg with Aldridge (4.8 apg) and Knight (4.1 apg) excelling in distributing the ball. Knight and Aldridge are tied for the team lead in steal with 17 each. Manning’s 11 blocks ranks second on the squad.
The starters for the past eight games have been Gardner, Knight, Aldridge, Jada Brown (# 4, 6-0 Soph. F) and Chayla Cheadle (# 22, 6-0 Fr. G). The top reserves during that stretch are Boyd, Bradley and Manning who have played in all eight games. Bunny Williams (# 5, 6-1 Sr. F) has seen action in five of the past eight games and eight league games overall. Larraine Enabulele (# 13, 6-0 Fr. F) has seen the court in three league games. Three of the starters average over 30 mpg: Aldridge (37.9 mpg), Knight (36.4 mpg) and Gardner (31.3 mpg). Boyd puts in 27.3 mpg coming in off the bench. Of the eight main players in the rotation, only Manning at 9.2 mpg is averaging less than 10 mpg.
Horns are led in scoring by a trio averaging just over 9 ppg: Kelsey (9.5 ppg), Ariel (9.4 ppg) and Imani (9.2 ppg). Imani (57.5%) and Kelsey (52.7%) are the most accurate from the field. A trio of players are close to be the first to reach triple digit FG attempts: Brady (98), Brooke (94) and Kelsey (93). Kelsey has made the most FGs with 49 while Imani is second with 46. Brooke (32) and Brady (31) are third and fourth, respectively, in FGs made. Horns have four players averaging over 2 3pt attempts a game: Ariel (2.3 attempts at 22.2%), Brooke (3.8 attempts at 32.6%), Brady (3.7 attempts a t25.0%) and Krystle (2.4 attempts at 16.7%). Brooke with 15 made 3s and Brady with 11 are the leaders in 3pters made. Ariel, even though she has only played in eight league games, has quickly demonstrated that she knows how to get to the FT line. She is tied with three others in FT attempts with 23 with Imani and Brady. Her 17 made FTs rank second to Imani’s 18 and is tied with Brady who also has 17. Kelsey is third in FTs made and second in FTs attempted (16-22, 72.7%). Three players are making over 80% from the FT line: Krystle (83.3% ; 5-6), Empress (80.0%; 12-15) and Brooke (82.4%; 14-17). Our four top players in FT attempts are all in 70=% along with two others: Kelsey (16-22; 72.7%), Ariel (17-23; 73.9%), Imani (18-23; 78.3%), Brady (17-23; 73.9%), Nekia (10-13; 76.9%) and Brianna (5-7; 71.4%). They have contributed to the team’s steady rise to rank fourth in the league in FT percentage at 72.0%.
Horns are led in rebounding by Kelsey with an average of 6.7 rpg. Imani adds 5.9 rpg. Brooke, Brady and Empress each averages over 3 rpg. Ariel, Nekia, Brianna and Celina each adds at least 2.0 rpg. Brady (2.9 apg) leads Empress (2.7 apg) and Brooke (2.1 apg) in distributing the ball. Brady (12) and Krystle (10) lead the team in steals. Imani (20) and Kelsey (18) top the squad in blocks.
The starting lineup for the last five games has been Kelsey, Ariel, Imani, Brooke and Brady. Kelsey is the only player to start all 12 league games. Nine active players have started at least one game. Nine players have seen action in all games they have been available for. Four others have played in at least one league game. Brady is the only one to see more than 30 mpg at 32.3 mpg. Kelsey, Ariel, Brooke and Empress all average over 24 mpg with Kelsey’s 28.6 mpg topping that foursome. Five other average in double digit minutes.
Projected starters based on the last game:
Texas KU
Imani (6-7 Jr.C) Brown (6-0 Soph. F)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Gardner (6-3 Sr. F)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G) Cheadle (6-0 Fr. G)
Brooke (5-4 Fr. G) Knight (5-7 Sr. G)
Ariel (5-11 Fr. G) Aldridge (5-7 Fr. G)
In the first game, Nneka was the main threat inside scoring and rebounding with Empress and Brady reaching double digits in scoring as well. This time, Kansas will need to contend with Kelsey and Imani inside. Brooke will provide a scoring threat at PG while Ariel did not play in the first game. Gardner and Knight have been the main scoring threats for the Jayhawks. The matchup between Brooke and Knight should be a good one with the experience that Brooks has gained in the past few weeks. Kelsey and Gardner should also provide a lot of action inside. Horns will continue to work the ball inside-outside while KU is likely to follow the trend to zone against Texas and collapse inside when the ball goes into the post. Horns will need be aggressive in attacking, either with passing or penetration, preferably a combination. Getting to the FT line will critical for the Horns as will be limiting TOs.
