The Texas Longhorns and the Iowa State Cyclones kick off their Big 12 slate as ISU hosts the Horns on Wednesday at 7 pm. The Iowa State Cyclones (9-1) are on a four game winning streak after a 50-42 loss to Iowa, the only common opponent faced by both UT and ISU. Texas is on a two game losing streak, going 2-4 in December, including an 86-63 loss to Iowa last Friday. The Cyclones are on 13 game home winning streak, including six this season. Texas has yet to play an away game this season, going 2-3 on neutral courts. Texas last won on the Cyclones’ home court during the 2008-09 season.
ISU is led in scoring by their five starters who average between 15.8 and 8.0 ppg: Hallie Christofferson (# 5, 6-3 Jr. F; 15.8 ppg); Chelsea Poppens (# 33, 6-2 Sr. F; 13.3 ppg); Anna Prins (# 55, 6-7 Sr. C, 11.4 ppg); Brynn Williamson (# 22, 5-11 Soph. G/F; 9.6 ppg) and Nikki Moody (# 4, 5-8 Soph. PG, 8.0 ppg). Top bench scorer is Nicole “Kidd” Blaskowsky (# 15, 5-7 Fr. G) at 7.7 ppg. These six players account for 87% of made FGs and 73% of FGs attempted. Christofferson (53-99, 53.5%) and Poppens (38-67, 56.7%) are hitting over 50% of their shots. Prins has attempted the most FGs (46-108, 42.6%). From BTA, Christofferson (20-45, 44.4%) and Williamson (21-52, 40.4%) are both over 40%. Prins (5-33, 15.2%), Moody (6-26, 23.1%) and Blaskowsky (17-59, 28.8%) are the other 3pt threats for the Cyclones. As a team, ISU is making an excellent 79.9% from the FT line. Williamson (15-15) and Amanda Zimmerman (# 42, 6-1 Sr. F; 6-6) are at 100%. Four others are 80% or better with Christofferson’s 32-40 (80%) topping the team in FTs made & attempted. Moody’s 18-24 for 75% is the worst percentage of the top six players. You really don’t want to put any of those top six players on the FT line.
Poppens just misses averaging a double double with 9.4 rpg to go with her 13.3 ppg. Christofferson adds 7.9 rpg while Prins is averaging 6.1 rpg. Moody’ 7.0 apg (70 assists total)ranks first in the Big 12. Prins with 21 assists is second on the team to Moody. Prins and Williamson share the blocks lead with 13 each. Zimmerman’s six blocks is second on the team. Three players are in double figures in steals although none averages more than Williamson’s 1.7 spg. Moody is at 11 (1.1 spg) and Christofferson at 10 (1.0 spg).
The Cyclones have 11 players on their roster. Seven average double figures in minutes with the top six all averaging over 23 mpg. Blaskowsky, Zimmerman and Fallon Ellis (# 32. 5-11 Soph. G/F) are the top three reserves. Madison Baier (# 34, 6-4 Fr. F/C) is the tallest Cyclone and the only reserve taller than 6-1.
Horns bring four players averaging double figures to this game: Chassidy (17.1 ppg), Nneka (15.2 ppg), Imani (11.0 ppg) and Cokie (10.1 ppg). Imani’s 56% on 51-91 leads the team. Cokie at 53.3% is the other Horn above 50% from the field. Nneka (63-131, 48.1%) and Chassidy (50-119, 42%) are the only other Horns hitting over 40% from the field. Chassidy is the top 3pt threat for Texas, having hit 41% of the 3s made by Texas and attempted a third of the 3pters (18-46, 39.1%). Ashley has come on recently and is now making 41.7% of her treys (10-24). While Celina (4-24, 16.7%) and Brady (4-29, 13.8%) don’t have good percentages from BTA, Celina is 3-6 in the past three games while Brady is made two of her four 3s in the same three game span. Horns have three players at 70% or better from the FT line: Chassidy (36-41, 87.8%), Brady (10-14, 71.4%) and Celina (7-10, 70%). Our posts are getting to the FT line but are not converting as well as they could: Nneka is 38-57 for 66.7%; Cokie is 17-26 for 65.4% and Imani is making 54.3% on 19-35.
Nneka continues to average a double double with 11.5 rpg and 15.2 ppg. Imani is second on the team in rebounding at 8.8 rpg , getting close to joining Nneka in averaging a double double. Three guards lead the team in assists with Celina’s 46 tops. Brady is second with 29 and Empress has 22. Imani tops the team with 30 blocks while Nneka chips in with 15 and Cokie has 11. Empress and Celina have 17 steals each while Nneka and Cokie add 11 steals each and Ashley has 10. Brady (9) and Imani (8) are close to hitting double digit steals for the season. With the addition of 6-4 freshman volleyball player Sara Hattis this past week, the Horns have 11 players that are able to play. Neither Gigi nor Chelsea have been cleared to play as of yet. Eight players have started at least one game with Nneka, Imani, Empress, Ashley and Chassidy starting the last game versus Central Michigan. Empress, Celina, Nneka, Ashley, Chassidy, Brady and Imani are all averaging over 20 mpg. Cokie and Anne Marie average 18 and 14 mpg, respectively. Chassidy at 31.6 mpg is the only Horn over 30 mpg. After getting in against Iowa, Anne Marie did not play in the last game and may not be available against ISU.
Projected Starters-based on last game:

Texas ISU
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Poppens (6-2 Sr. F)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Prins (6-7 Sr. C)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Williamson (5-11 Soph. G/F)
Ashley (5-8 Jr. G) Moody (5-8 Soph. G)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Christofferson (6-3 Jr. F) [/pre]
This game will match four of the top 20 league scorers in Chassidy, Nneka, Christofferson and Prins. Horns have two of the top four rebounders in Nneka and Imani who will match up against Christofferson and Prins, another top rebounding duo. Christofferson, Williamson and Chassidy are among the top five in the league in 3pt percentage. Imani and Nneka rank second and fifth in blocks while Prins and Williamson are tied for sixth in that category.
Williamson is the Cyclones best defender but if she is on Chassidy, that means a big will be matched up against a Texas guard. Of course, a zone would make that a moot point. The ISU posts are experienced and solid. They will be going against a younger and talented Texas post squad. This is going to be an interesting matchup as both squads battle for points and rebounds. The ability of the ISU backcourt to score from BTA will be a severe test of the Horns’ perimeter defense, not a skill they have excelled at so far this season. ISU is likely to be the best 3pt shooting team Texas has faced this season. Christofferson, Williamson and Blaskowsky have been the primary 3pt shooters for ISU, a fact that Texas defenders will need to remember. The problem is that all six top players for ISU can shoot the 3 although not all are having success so far this season.

Both teams average 70 ppg while ISU is number one in the league in scoring defense and Texas is ninth. Texas could have trouble scoring if they don’t take advantage of their ability to get offensive rebounds. As part of their overall defense, ISU is number one in the league in 3pt defense while Texas is last in the league. ISU averages 26 3s per game and makes 8 a game. Texas will need to tighten up their 3pt D to prevent ISU from raining down a storm from BTA. 45% of ISU’s shots are from BTA. Horns will have to defend the three without putting the shooters on the line. ISU is the top team in the league in making their FTs. Unlike Texas, ISU will look to shoot the 3 first. Texas will be looking to do more scoring inside with Imani, Nneka and Cokie. While the Horns can’t get into a 3pt shooting contest with ISU, they need to hit the shots they put up from BTA. Getting to the FT line will be critical for the Horns as will converting once there. Neither team is really deep athough Texas has been more willing to play their bench players while ISU has pretty much used a 7-8 player rotation. ISU has less depth inside than Texas which could be an advantage for Texas if they can get the ISU posts in foul trouble.
