Texas (14-2; 3-2) travels to Baylor (16-1; 5-0) for a Monday afternoon game. Texas leads the overall series 57-29 but Baylor leads in Big 12 play 22-17. Baylor has won the last eight games, four at Waco and four at Austin. Coach Aston is looking for her first win vs Baylor. The Horns are seeking to break the longest losing streak in the series while Baylor wants to extend that streak to nine.
Baylor has the leading scorer in conference games in Nina Davis (# 13. 5-11 Soph. F) who averages 19.6 ppg. Supplying double digit scoring support are Khadijiah Cave (# 55, 6-2 Soph. P) at 11.6 ppg and Kristy Wallace (# 4, 5-11 Fr. G) at 10.4 ppg. Imani Wright (# 20, 5-9 Soph. G) who averages 9.4 ppg and Alexis Prince, (# 12, 6-1 RS Soph. G), coming back after foot problems kept her out last season, contributes 7.2 ppg. Those five are the main scorers for the Lady Bears. Five players making at least 45.7% of their shots help Baylor to the #2 spot in FG% for league play at 45.5%. Three of them have played in all five league games: Davis (37-69, 53.6%), Cave (26-47, 55.3%) and Wright (16-35, 45.7%). Cave has the highest shooting percentage among players that have seen action in all five league games at 55.3%. Davis leads the team in FGs made and attempted (37-69). Cave leads the bench players in FGs made, attempted and scoring. The Lady Bears have three primary 3pt shooters: Wallace (11-21, 52.4%) who leads in 3s made, attempted and percentage; Wright (6-16, 37.5%) and Prince (7-14, 50.0%). They have made all of Baylor’s 3s in league play and have all but one 3pt attempt. Niya Johnson (# 2, 5-8 Jr. G) has the other 3pt attempt. Like UT’s Nneka, Davis is the player on her team that gets to the FT line the most and has made the most FTs. Like Nneka, Davis is struggling from the FT line, making only 57.1% (24-42). Wright is the top FT shooter at 90.0% (9-10). Aside from Chardonae Fuquá (# 3, 6-0 Jr. F) who has hit 2-2 in three games, only Cave (6-8, 75.0%) and Wallace (3-4, 75.0%) are hitting more than 67% of their FTs, leading to Baylor being the worse FT shooting team in league play.
Davis is the leading rebounder at 8.8 rpg, which puts her fifth in the league. Johnson with 6.2 rpg, Cave with 5.4 rpg, Sune Agbuke (# 22, 6-4, Sr. P) with 5.2 rpg and Kristina Higgins (# 44, 6-5 Jr. P) with 4.0 rpg help to make Baylor the second ranked rebounding team in the league. Johnson has 45 assists which ranks her 1st in the Big 12.Wallace with 10 is second with six others having between six and five assists. Agbuke is their best shot blocker with 10. Wallace and Prince with three each are second in blocks. Three players lead in steals with nine each: Davis, Wallace and Johnson.
Baylor has a base rotation of eight. Three of them rotate at the post opposite Davis for the most part: Agbuke, Cave and Higgins. Davis, Prince, Johnson and Agbuke have started every Big 12 game. Wright started the first two games before Wallace took over for the last three. Cave, Wright and Higgins have played in every league game. Fuquá, Dekeiya Cohen (# 1, 6-2 Fr. F) and Ieshia Small (# 24, 6-0 Soph. G) have seen action in three league games. Davis (32.8 mpg), Wallace (32.6 mpg) and Johnson (32.8 mpg) play the most minutes per game. Cave (18.6 mpg), Agbuke (20.2 mpg) and Higgins (8.2 mpg) split the time at the other post and provide seven minutes relief to Davis. Wright (22.0 mpg) and Prince (20.8 mpg) join Agbuke in the 20+ mpg group.
Nneka (11.8 ppg) and Brady (10.6 ppg) lead the team in scoring. Nekia is third at 8.0 ppg. Nekia (16-24) and Brianna (2-3) lead the team in FG% at 66.7%. Imani (8-16) and Ariel (1-2) are second at 50.0%. Brady leads in FGs attempted at 49 with Nneka tops in FGs made at 19. Brady is at 36.7% from the field (18-49) while Nneka is hitting 42.2% (19-45). Brady (7-19, 36.8%), Brooke (3-17, 17.6%) and Krystle (2-11, 18.2%) are the leading 3pt shooters for the Horns. Nekia and Celina, both 3-6 from BTA, are the leaders in 3pt % at 50.0%. Empress has hit all three of her FTs. Imani is 8-9 (88.9%) while Krystle is at 75.0% (3-4). Nneka (21-37, 56.8%) leads in FTs made and attempted. Brady joins Nneka in being the only other Horn in double digit FT attempts (10-14, 71.4%). The Horns are seventh in the league from the FT line at 64.3%.Nneka remains the only player averaging a double double in Big 12 games with her 11.8 ppg and league leading 12.0 rpg. Kelsey’s 5.4 rpg are second while Empress is third at 4.8 rpg. Imani adds 4.0 rpg coming off the bench. Empress’ 3.0 assist per game rank 8th in the league. Brady (1.8 apg), Brooke (1.4 apg), Celina (1.4 apg) and Nneka (1.2 apg) are all averaging over one assist per game. Brady is the only player with double digit steals (11). That ties her for fourth in the league. Krystle with 8 is second while Nneka’s six rank third. Nneka tops the team with 12 blocks (3rd in the league) while both Imani and Kelsey have four each.
Horns have two players averaging over 30 mpg: Brady (31.4 mpg) and Nneka (30.2 mpg). Empress (25.8 mpg), Brooke (24.2 mpg) and Kelsey (24.8 mpg) all average over 20 mpg. In the teens are Nekia (12.8 mpg), Imani (11.8 mpg), Celina (14.0 mpg) and Krystle (17.2 mpg). Those nine have played in every league game. Tasia has played in four (5.0 mpg ) while Brianna and Ariel returned to action in the fifth game. Horns have ten players in the rotation and will add Bri and Ariel to make a 12 player rotation. Expect one of Lilley, Diani or Sara to see action in the games at times as well.
Projected starters based on the last game: While Celina and Krystle started the last game vs Tx Tech, I think Brady is likely to return to the starting lineup. It could be either Celina or Krystle at the PG spot.

Texas BU
Nneka (6-1 Sr. F) Davis (5-11 Soph. F)
Kelsey (6-5 Soph. C) Agbuke (6-4 Sr. P)
Brady (5-11 RS Jr. G) Wallace (5-11 Fr. G)
Empress (5-7 Jr. G) Prince (6-1 RS Soph. G)
Krystle (5-4 Sr. G) Johnson (5-8 Jr. G) [/pre]
While Nneka is likely to match up with Davis initially, Davis is also used at the 3 spot at times, meaning she will be the responsibility of one of the Texas guards. Davis’ quickness and explosiveness make her a very tough matchup despite her relatively small height for a post. Davis has been the focal point for the Baylor offense, creating open looks outside for the BU guards. Texas cannot afford to help inside off of Wallace, Prince or Wright who will bury the open 3pter. Neither Davis nor Nneka can afford to get into foul trouble as they are a big part of their teams’ offense, either scoring or opening up others for shots. Baylor will be able to match Texas’ height in the post and has one of the more dynamic scorers coming in off the bench in Cave. Even though neither Bri nor Ariel may be able to play 20+ minutes, they will help tremendously in being able to match Baylor’s height and quickness on the perimeter. Which team can free their posts up for scoring may determine which team wins this game.

The top two rebounding teams will face off in Waco this Monday, Jan. 19. They are also the top two in rebounding margin. That battle of the boards should be a big part of who wins this game. Baylor’s offense is working smoothly while Texas has been sputtering the past three games. The inside game of both is a huge part of their offense. Texas posts take 39% of the shots while Baylor posts take 48% of the shots. Neither team has been outstanding at the FT line with both ranking at or near the bottom of the league (Baylor 10th & Texas 7th). Part of that is that the main FT shooter for each team is hitting less than 60% of the FTs. Look for both teams to try to shut down the other’s post players. Baylor may go the route that others have, using a zone and daring the Texas guards to hit the outside shot or they may depend on man to man to do it. Texas is more likely to use man to man although they have used zone at times. Horns, as they have done in all games, will pressure Baylor with a press at times. If they can force TOs, they will need to capitalize. Baylor is the only team to have less than 60 TOs in league play. Baylor has three players among the top eight in steals. Horns will need to protect the ball and handle the one on one pressure from the Lady Bears.
The game will at 5:30 PM Monday in Waco. It will be televised on FS1. In Austin’s TWC lineup, that is channels 97 & 400. The game can be heard on radio at KVET 1300 AM.
Just as an FYI: OU and OSU will tee off at 3:30 PM on FS1 to provide a lead-in to the Texas vs Baylor game.
