Baylor (25-1, 14-0) hosts Texas (10-15, 3-11) this Saturday looking for their six straight win in the series. Texas leads the overall series 57-26. Baylor will be welcoming back former women basketball players at this game. Baylor has cinches the regular season title, their third in a row, and will be looking to finish Big 12 play undefeated for the second season in a row. Texas will be looking for their first win since March 10, 2010. A win Saturday would break two Baylor streaks: a record 36 Big 12 regular season wins in a row and a nation longest 53 game home winning streak.
Horns are led by a trio of players averaging double figures: Chassidy (13.5 ppg), Nneka (12.1 ppg) and Imani (10.9 ppg). Empress (8.4 ppg) is inching towards a double digit scoring average with five straight double digit scoring games, beginning with the ISU game on Feb. 6th. Those four each has topped 100 FG attempts in 14 Big 12 games: Chassidy (61-156, 39.1%), Nneka (61-132, 46.2%), Imani (60-139, 43.2%) and Empress (49-123, 39.8%). Chassidy (23-77, 29.9%) and Gigi (7-27, 25.9%) remain the top 3pt threats for the Horns. Seven Horns have at least 10 FT attempts. Brady’s 85.7% (24-28) tops the team in FT%. Nneka with 35 of 50 FTs (70.0%) has made and attempted the most FTs. Chassidy (17-24, 70.8%) and Imani (31-40, 77.5%) are also making over 70% of their FTs.
Imani (9.5 rpg) and Nneka (7.6 rpg) rank one-two in controlling the boards. Chassidy is third at 5.3 rpg and Empress fourth with an average of 4.3 rpg. Assists finds seven Horns with double digit numbers, led by Celina with 43. Empress (32) and Chassidy (23) are second and third in this category. Imani is the top shot blocker with 31 while Nneka is second with six.
Imani and Empress, both frosh, have started every Big 12 game to date. Two other freshmen, Brady and Celina, have played in every Big 12 game with Celina starting nine games. Chassidy (12) and Nneka (13) have started every Big 12 game they have been available for. Eight Horns average at least 10 mpg with Chassidy (35.2 mpg), Empress (33.6 mpg) and Nneka (31.0 mpg) topping the list. Chassidy, Empress, Nneka, Imani and Celina started the last game with Brady, Gigi and Sara providing support off the bench. Those eight form the main rotation for the Horns.
Baylor has three players scoring in double figures: Brittney Griner (# 42, 6-8 Sr. P; 23.4 ppg), Odyssey Sims (# 0, 5-8 Jr. G; 12.1 ppg) and Brooklyn Pope (# 32, 6-1 GS F/P; 11.3 ppg). Griner at 58.9% (139-236), Pope at 51.7% (60-116) and Jordan Madden (# 3, 6-0 Sr. G) at 50.6% (39-77) are all hitting over 50% of their FGs. Only Makenzie Robertson (# 14, 5-9 Jr. G), Niya Johnson (# 2, 5-8 Fr. G) and Sune Agbuke (# 22, 6-4 Soph. P) are the only Lady Bears hitting less than 44% of their shots. Sims (14-41, 34.1%) and Madden (12-28, 42.9%) are the main 3pt threats among the starters. Off the bench, Alexis Prince (# 12, 6-1 Fr. G; 9-20, 45.0%) and Roberston (5-13, 38.5%) are also dangerous from BTA. Posts Griner and Pope have gone to the FT line the most any Baylor player with Griner hitting 64.1% (50-78) and Pope 63.3% (38-60). Sims (35-47, 74.5%) and Madden (17-24, 70.8%) are the only Lady Bears hitting at least 70% of their FTs in league play other than Kristina Higgins (# 44, 6-5 Fr. P) who is 2 of 2.
Griner is just off double digits in rebounding at 9.5 rpg which leads Baylor. Destiny Williams (# 10, 6-1 Sr. F/P) is the second leading rebounder at 6.7 rpg while coming primarily off the bench. Pope (5.5 rpg) and Kimetria Hayden (# 1, 6-0 Sr. G; 5.1 rpg) provide strong rebounding support. Sims (78) and Hayden (75) top the Lady Bears in assists with Griner (39), Johnson (34) and Madden (30) all chipping in at least 30 assists each. Griner leads with 66 blocks while Williams has 8 and Pope, Madden and Prince each has 7. Five Lady Bears have at least 11 steals with Sims (43) and Madden (21) ranking one-two.
Griner, Sims, Pope, Hayden, Madden, Williams and Johnson have played in all 14 league games with each averaging at least 10 mpg. Prince and Robertson have played in 13 games, averaging 14.0 and 9.1 mpg, respectively. That’s a solid nine player rotation with four others available off the bench. Griner (32.4 mpg) and Sims (32.1 mpg) lead in mpg. Griner, Sims, Hayden and Madden have started all 14 league games. Pope has started 13 of 14 while Williams has started one game. Williams started the last game played which was against UConn while Pope started the last Big 12 game against TCU.Projected starting lineups:
[pre]
Texas Baylor
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Williams (6-1 Sr. F)
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Griner (6-8 Sr. P)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr, G) Madden (6-0 Sr. G)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Hayden (6-0 Sr. G)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Sims (5-8 Jr. G) [/pre]
The Baylor starting five has at least a couple of advantage over Texas’: they are playing in a system they are familiar with and they are all upper classmen (four Seniors and one Junior). Texas counters with three frosh, a soph and a junior. Still, the post play should be something to see. These are two of the best in the league in rebounding, ranking in the top three in almost every rebounding category. The posts are the main reason for that although Texas does get more rebounding help from their guards. Empress will contend with Sims for most of the game. The key for Texas will be the ability of the guards to score from the perimeter and from midrange. Griner allows the Baylor guards to take chances and play extremely tight defense on the perimeter. Chassidy will be the focus of the Baylor D, especially after her last two games averaging just over 26 pts per game. Empress has also become a consistent offensive threat the last five games. Baylor had trouble keeping Imani off the boards as she grabbed 18 rebs.

The last game between these teams two weeks ago ended up as a 75-48 win for Baylor. The Lady Bears pulled away in the second half after holding a nine point advantage at half time. Texas and Baylor ended up tied in rebounding with 40 each. The difference was on the defensive end, where Baylor excels as Texas had trouble scoring although they took a similar number of shots. It will be interesting to see if Texas can stay with Baylor on the boards, force TOs and get to the FT line. Texas has had trouble making shots all season long except for the last two games. If they can make shots on the Baylor D and not let Baylor dominate the boards, they have a chance to pull off the upset. The confidence they have gained in running their offense the last two games will be important in facing the top defense in the league.
