Class 4A All-State football team
Thursday, December 18, 2008

The Class 4A all-state high school football team, as voted on by The Associated Press Sports Editors and based on regular-season performances. The Class 5A all-state team will be released today:

Central Texas players

FIRST TEAM

• Paden Kelly, Lake Travis: The University of Texas-bound offensive lineman had 56 knockdowns and didn't allow a sack all season, grading out at 83 percent.

• Rhontae Scales, Killeen: The future Texas A&M offensive lineman was a hulking force on the Kangaroos' line, with 55 knockdowns and 65 pancake blocks.

• Cade McCrary, Lake Travis: The Cavaliers' top receiving threat, he had 54 catches for 1,182 yards and 16 touchdowns, averaging 21.5 yards per catch.

• Garrett Gilbert, Lake Travis: The Class 4A offensive player of the year led the top-ranked Cavaliers to this week's state championship game, completing 180 of 266 regular-season attempts for 3,043 yards, 38 touchdowns and only two interceptions. He also rushed for 509 yards and 12 more scores.

Since he was named the state's offensive player of the year in 4A, Gilbert is now eligible to be named the state's overall player of the year, which will be announced Friday. Giddings defensive back Xavier Daniels — the Class 3A defensive player of the year — also is up for the honor.

• Chris Maldonado, Hays: The senior defensive lineman had 94 tackles, 10 sacks and caused and recovered two fumbles.

• Quinton Crow, Lake Travis: The junior linebacker had 129 tackles, five sacks and five quarterback hurries.

• Harry Hatch, Lake Travis: Another Cavaliers linebacker, the senior had 99 tackles — including 47 solo stops and 19 for loss — along with 11 sacks, 10 hurries and one interception. He also caused four fumbles.

• Kerry Hyder, LB, LBJ

Garret Gilbert for player of the year was pretty much a no brainer. II sure wish the Lake Travis game was going to be on the TV today instead of one of the 5A games.

Denison's center, Corbin Boettger, was a surprise to me. I knew he had played very well this year but I did not realize he had been that efficient. He is a junior therefore we get to enjoy seeing him play next year too.

I understand we have several OL recruits but are a bit thin at center. He may be a player to keep an eye on for 2010.

Why aren't one or more Lake Travis WRs on the Longhorns recruiting list?

I see just one WR on the 2009 commitment list so far. Surely it would make sense to get one or two of the guys Gilbert has been throwing to....

1) they have learned and worked with him
2) they have to be pretty good

A few things about that:

1) Being a great HS WR doesn't mean you are going to be a great college WR. Obviously.

2) There are a ton of WR's throughout Texas who would put up huge numbers playing with Gilbert in that offense.

3) WR just isn't a big need this year. We only have one SR. WR this year (Cosby) assuming Ship gets his med shirt. One ship in for one going out is fine. We also will only lose one next year, that being Shipley. Williams is only a freshman. Kirkendoll and Collins are only sophomores. We redshirted Hales and Grant, who both have huge potential.

Even if we have a transfer from a guy buried on the depth chart like Phillip Payne or Montre Webber (completely hypothetical, no info or speculation), then we'd be better off waiting until next year which appears to have a good amount of talent in-state, led by Darius White.

Gustav, count von Alvensleben-Erxleben

Prussian general and adjutant general who was the chief personal adviser to King (later Emperor) William I.

Yes , R%ussell Erxleben was from Seguin.... an early German Texas settlement...... lots of Czechs and Germans in that area
