Coming into Austin tomorrow and and looking for some good Tex Mex, but I will only be around the North side of town. What are your suggestions? Is Enchiladas y Mas the consensus for this part of town?
At some point, you northsiders need to do yourself a favor and try Elsi's on Burnet. It's not exclusively TexMex, as they have Salvadoran and other central American dishes, but it's mighty good.
In that area, I would side, ever so slightly, with the Dart Bowl's enchiladas over Enchiladas y mas. But then, the rest of the menu at Dart Bowl is typical -- but first-rate -- bowling alley fare.
the cheese enchiladas at enchiladas y mas are just store-bought corn tortillas stuffed with velveeta and covered in wolf brand chili. their other stuff is good, but i'm not a big velveeta fan.
I just ate at Enchiladas Y Mas with some buddies from work due to all the hornfans props. They are pissed now. We all got the #5 and it was ******* horrible. The corn tortillas were totally undercooked and everything else was flavorless. You guys should actually eat there once in a while before you proclaim it Tex Mex heaven after the one time you went there 3 years ago.
I don't think this has anything to do with personal taste. The enchilada plate was just bad, period. The chips/salsa/queso were decent. The rocks rita tasted like spoiled lemonade.
i have gone to the arandas taqueria on burnet a few times in the last couple months. they have really good carne asada, but i haven't tried anything else.
btw, my opinion of enchiladas y mas's cheese enchiladas would completely change if they used cheddar and/or jack instead of velveeta. i think they harvest velveeta when mark mangino goes to donate blood.
