Tex and Long Tex

Awhile back I posted a story about the recent passing, in Austin, of Tex Coulter, my uncle Ray's brother, who was one of the nicest people I ever knew, and a prototype for the "Gentle Giant"... albeit Sport Magazine (used to be THE sports mag before SI came along) referred to him in an article as "The Roughest Man in Pro Football" and credited him with the creation of the now-outlawed "head slap" (imagine a hand the size of both of yours and a bit more to boot hitting you in the ear-hole before you could even come out of your three-point stance) as well as the also-outlawed "forearm shiver" (imagine a forearm as big around as your leg hitting you under the chin.

Last week, an acquaintance of mine asked if I'd seen the picture of the Coulter brothers in the Rio Grande Electric Coop magazine we get. Tell the truth, I hardly ever even look at the damn thing. Imagine my surprise when I rooted around in the "periodicals" stack in my library, found the Coop rag, flipped through it and found the picture. I've seen this, but it's probably been 50 years since the last time I laid eyes on it. It was taken when they played for the Masonic Home Mighty MItes after the banksters took their daddy's farm, so this picture would probably have beem around '38 or '39 I think. Most of the kids there were small, but they were all tough as nails, and Tex and Long Tex were not the only ones to play college and pro ball.

Anyhow, I was so taken with this that I scanned it - took awhile to get a decent copy - this is a reduced jpg - the scanned original is a tiff, but it's about 6 MB and of course a little big for your screen. If anyone for whatever strange reason, wants a copy of it, I'll be happy to oblige... all you goota do is ask.

Ray "Long Tex" Coulter, on the left, his younger brother, Dewitt "Tex" Coulter on the right. Rusty Russell, coach of the Masonic Home Mighty Mites, in the middle. In this picture, I think Long Tex is 17, maybe 18, about 6'6", and Tex is only 14 or 15.

That's a really cool pick longtex and great Texas family heritage to be proud of. I bet the Ft. Worth historical society would love to have that, though it's probably worth more to you and your family.
