Tempo

Does anyone else feel that that the "tempo" (how fast/slow our run plays develop) are a big problem with Colt as our QB?

In other words, with Vince it played into his strength to let the run develop rather slowly and to consitently use that tempo throughout the game because there were so many options.

I don't mean to turn this into another would our offense be better with Chiles/Sherrod at QB. I think Colt is an outstanding player but our running game suffers against decent defenses which has really hurt us the past few years.

Of coarse there are many explanations as to why we haven't been able to run when we want to and control the clock (i.e. execution, inexperience on the line, smaller backs, formation, etc.)

My point is this, the formations we use along with the tempo at which our backfield develops hasn't changed much if at all since VY left. Maybe I'm completely off base here, but it doesn't seem to me that the formation or personnel is the problem. To me there has been a lack of quick attacks at the middle of the line.

Maybe we did try this more than I can recall. If memory serves me correctly we have tried a few speed options to the edges and I don't remember any of them working (Colt is just not fast/shifty enough to make it work). In short I think some quick dives and some fast swing passes to the RB could really loosen things up for us. Maybe put some TE/WR in motion to lead block too. Thoughts?

If anything, I think the offense played better in an uptempo manner. I'd like to see us run a lot more no-huddle.

I agree that the running game should be better next year, and Colt keeping more on the zone read will help. I also remember us recruiting some guys that should give us more options at fullback, which I think helps as well. I don't know that we really had a really strong option there last year, and that limits what you can do in the running game.

nothing was wrong with the offense, other than inconsistent OL play due to youth and injury (which leads to an inconsistent line up.)

the defensive tempo was piss poor until the bowl game.

In this post I'm not reffering to the tempo as in no huddle/quick snaps/cadence. What I mean is that the RB/QB takes a while to decide where he is going to hit the hole. It's defenitely a product of the zone read and the coaches philosphy to set up play action off of it.

If you go back and look at JC's 80 yard run vs. ou, I really like how quick JC got the ball and started to run down hill. (Maybe I'm wrong, but I think this was a pre-designed run to JC that looks like the zone read...basically a play action run.) Of coarse he made a nice cut back, the 0-line blocked wrecked shop, and the threat of Vince running made one of the ou defenders get out of position and then whiff on JC and collide with his own teammate.

The reason I choose this clip was that had JC not cut back he would have still picked up a nice chunck of yards had he just lowered his pads and ran like he was shot out of a cannon. This is something I can see McGee doing well this year. I'd just like to see a little more "snap and attack" type plays.
