Tell me about TV rabbit ears

I want to drop satellite/cable altogether and just have the local channels. I'm not worried about missing out on any TV because we don't really watch much.

But I would like the option of still seeing The Office or the local news from time to time. When I was a kid we didn't have cable and I remember it was always a pain in the *** to get a clear picture with the antenna. Is it still fuzzy with an antenna, even if I live in the heart of Austin?

How is the picture quality with a decent antenna these days? I'm talking about for a normal TV, not HD, LCD, plasma ...

As for quality of signal, when I lived in the Zilker area last year, I had Dish Network and got the locals over the air. My regular rabbit ears brought in a signal just as clear as the dish signal. No problems.

right on the money. the converter boxes that down convert the digital signal to analog also don't do a very good job and the picture is pretty bad. step up and by a HDTV.

Oh yeah, I had totally forgotten about the DTV deadline. I guess I'll get a converter box.

I'm definitely not going up to HD. I've watched HD and it is impressive, but TV is just such a small part of my life that HD just doesn't mean much to me. I can't justify the expense. I've seen it plenty of times and it looks great, but it;s never made me want to go out and buy one. My TV sometimes goes a week at a time without being turned on.

I just remember in the late '70s when we'd have giant squiggly lines running across the screen or static so thick you couldn't recognize faces on the screen. And having to manipulate ythe antenna constantly to try to improve the picture. It sounds like it's better than that these days. I don't need crystal clear precision, just something like Youtube quality or better.

Get a converter box and the $8-10 RCA antenna from best buy. It works best if you're less than 20 miles from the tower, which almost all of Austin is.
