Tell me about South Austin Jug Band

To me they're half Rascal Flats and half Dave Mathews. In otherwords, a bit bluegrass and a bit jam band.

Go see Hayes Carll down in Gruene Wed night - best local thing going imo.

Wasn't trying to minimize their talent, so I should have elaborated. My comment was more from the bluegrass instrumentation of a band like Rascal Flats or Union Station, but they also have a tenancy to launch into the 10 minute jam-band song like a DMB, Grateful Dead or Widespread Panic. No? Will certainly admit being wrong if so.

I'm sure they like to stretch out more than someone like you (or I) would like, but jeez, Rascal Flatts? That hurts!

Mea culpa - my bad...and NO I don't own or listen to RF!!!

I don't think you're that far off, dude. at the same time, I don't really know what RF sounds like.

they're very jammy. much moreso than "normal" bluegrass. but, they're not exactly the new grass -- be it the Colorado sound or any of the other folks playing modern blue grass (two high string, nickel creek, etc.). I guess you could say new grass w/a Texas Country vibe? sometimes classifying music is such a downer...

I can't say I'm crazy about them, but they're def not bad. I thought they were better when Warren Hood was still in the band...guess that shows how long it's been since I've really been out to see them.

as stated, their instrumentalists are very good -- fiddle, mando and the flatpicking on the guitar. I've run into these guys around town a little bit and the anecdote above seems right. they're good guys.

Do they sounds anything like Emmett Otter's Jug Band?
Then again I only see them around Christmas ever year...

Rascal Flats???? Ive never seen the Jug Band but i may never try after hearing this comparison.

rascal flats is more Micheal Bolton than bluegrass.
