eventually i'm going to move into a house with a wife. and i work long hours so i'd like for their to be some kind of protection for her. are german shepards the way to go? "i am legend" made me think they are bad ***.

Shepards are great dogs especially for families. I had several growing up and they are a joy to have. Make sure though that you train them early and that you expose them to other dogs. In addition you need to make sure that you are willing to spend enough time with the dog as they like and need to be very active. Extremely smart dogs.

german should be capitalized as well.

I grew up with them. Very protective of family- babies especially. We had one that would lay at the foot of my little cousins crib...and when you took the baby out, you better do it very slowly and carefully, otherwise our dog would growl.

I remember one time some dude came to pick up my sister...my dog was barking and I was hollering for my sister. I told the guy to wait outside..so I shut the door..well, he decided to open our front door and come inside...mistake. My dog gave hime a quip nip on the thigh and the guy went back outside.

They are great dogs and are very good with children. They are also very smart and extremly protective.

They are bad ***. My friend who is in the secret service just got one. It is 5 or 6 months old and already 75 lbs. He is putting it through defense training (name?) and attack training. Said you have a "trigger" word and after you say it, anything you point at or what you were looking at when you said the trigger word he will track. I would love to have one.

My dog is a shepherd mix and the coolest dog ever. he is one of the family and a great guard dog. my kids have grown up with him.

He won't fetch though, must be something about the breed?

Great, great dogs. Very protective of their family. Have similar stories growing up to the above posts.

Easy to house train.

I have two GSD, a 2.5 month old and a 14 month old.

Super easy to house train and train in general. Great dogs, very sweet, not hyperactive, perfectly content to be on a dead sprint after a ball and fall asleep at your feet.

They MUST be trained and mentally stimulated though. They are smart smart smart dogs and if you aren't training them and exercising their mind, they'll find some way to do something else "constructive".

The breeder we got ours from does police dog training as well. It is absolutely incredible what these dogs are capable of. She showed us a video of the dogs she trained in action... One would be in a car, window down, its owner out in a field about 200 yards away. Some guy comes up to the owner, they talk for a while and then the owner makes an aggressive move at the other guy. Dog sits still. The other guy then makes an aggressive move at the owner and the dog jumps out of the window and takes off and mauls the F out of the stranger. Owner says "stop" and the dog heels immediately. They do it again but this time mid-sprint he yells "stop" and the dog stops dead in his tracks before getting to the stranger. Amazing discipline on the dogs part.

Oh and my 14 month old loves to play fetch. My 2.5 month old loves to chase my 14 month old while playing fetch

great dogs! very smart, protective, great with children, playful. socialize them early and often. can be unpredictable when socializing with other dogs. make sure to get them trained and make your trainer tell you positive and negative body movement. they also have problems with their rear legs when they get older.

I've been around them all my life and would never own anything else. Currently on number 6. Heidi, Pearl, Dixie, Major, Cassy, and now I have Blade(the breeder picked that one).

The GSD is a herding dog so they do need to be stimulated ie they need job or they will get very bored very quick. Our current male is 3 and right at 100 lbs. Anything bigger is not ideal. Females should probably max at 80. If you get one you must spend the time to train them. We bot a dog back pack and load it down with about 6-8 soup cans and go for a walk. It's amazing to see the change is his demeanor when we put on the back pack. My favorite quote about GSD's is "they aren't the best at anything but they are second best at everything"

I prefer American GSD's but you might consider a German GSD's. WIth our last two our male was American and our female was German.

I've always heard these dogs were potentially dangerous (top five when you count bites/attacks, right?). It sounds like it's their protective nature that makes them that way?

They are also known as German Shedders. They shed alot so be ready for fur everywhere. My friend has two of them and he ended up tiling most of his floors to make cleanup easier.

What is more important is a dog that would "alert" your wife that someone is trying to enter the house. That is more important than what the dog would do once he enters your home

All the posts about how smart and how well GS are with people/kids are all true. But if you are looking for a dog to help keep intruders from entering your home then any dog that will bark as soon as someone tries to enter will work. Intruders do not want to enter a home if the occupants are aware that someone is trying to break in. Most any lap dog will start barking as soon as they hear someone coming.

And before posters start the "lap dog bashing', remember one thing, all breeds of dogs are man-made for a specific purpose so don't knock the breed of dog.
