Tech series

Vol Horn 4 Life

Good Bye To All The Rest!
Wow, not one post on the Saturday or Sunday Tech games?

I saw we won the series somewhere, but is that true? I can't seem to find actual scores anywhere.

Texas won the series 2-1. The loss was on Saturday, 4-2. Sunday was an 8-1 victory. Now Texas is 4-5 in conference.

To me, no posts >>> overstated criticism.

The past 2 weeks have not been ideal, but people act like the wheels have fallen off. We're still a Top 10 team.

I'll tell you one thing, we'll know everything we need to know about this team after the OSU/Nebraska road series.

I think everyone is frustrated as it is more of the same. Great pitching, no offense, and a likely loss in a regional again this year.

I thought this weekend went great for Texas. I know Tech is a poor defensive club but I think the offense made big strides and the Horns defense was strong.

On to Stillwater!

I'm a little frustrated. I hope my post is not considered "overstated criticism", but we cannot hit the ball right now. I was in Austin on business last Tuesday and Wednesday and was listening to the game on 1300. I can't tell you how many times Craig Way said "for teams like DBU, we're probably seeing their weekend pitchers for mid-week games..." or something like that. But, it's still DBU, and we're still Texas!!

DBU's mid week pitcher is probably their best. They are not in a conference and can save their best for their mid week opponents. He also had starts against Rice and T. Tech in mid week games and he hit 96 on the radar gun in the 2nd inning and set pretty consistant around the 92-94 range againts us.

DBU is a tournament team, not some scrub that's the mid-week whipping boy for Big XII teams.

The pitcher they threw was like 4-0 with a sub-2 ERA.

I'll agree that our hitting has been poor and inconsistent, but the thing that annoys me is fans expecting to come out and dominate every game while putting up 10+ runs.

I see a team that is missing ONE ingredient from being great ... and offense is usually the easiest thing to fix for a baseball team. I'd put our pitching/defense up against anybody.

But like I stated before, this team will show who it is in the next 2 weeks. Stay tuned.

All of you uneducated, over the top naysayers should do a little research. Check out the 2005 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP team.

Started the season 16-0
Finished the season 56-16
Conference 16-10
Lost Big XII tournament
Won five elimination games to make it to Omaha
Swept Omaha
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

My only regular season expectation for this team is to finish as a Top 8 Nat'l seed, securing a Regional and Super.

Right now we're a little off pace, but can easily make up ground. I think if we can stay in Austin we have a chance in the post-season.

Litnin' Horn: Not sure what your point is, about the 2005 team comparison ... That team was 33-6 before they had a lean patch of 8-6 record and picked up steam again. They lost a few in the tournaments but the pitching depth kept helping them advance.

This year's team is probably showing slightly better pitching but that team had quite a bit of better hitting.

Weare now 17-7 already. If we go 23-4 from here on out and finish the regular season 40-11, this team can be compared to the 2005 team. Can we do that - hell, yes - with the pitching we have; but the bats will need to be marginally better though, to the tune of an extra 1 to 1.5 run more per game.

The 2005 team finished with an ERA of 2.80 and an opponent ERA of 5.30 ... This year's team has not played a great schedule yet but is at 2.03 ERA and 4.04 opponent ERA. The opponent ERA needs to go up a bit for us to finish the regular season with under 15 or so losses. 20-7 from here on till end of regular season is not that unreasonable for this team (37-14) and they would be likethe 2005 team, and a contendor. Anything less would leave them as a very good team but not a serious Omaha contendor. Let us wait and see.

I don't want to be swept by anybody. With the kind of pitching we have, we shouldn't be swept by anybody on our schedule. It's frustrating to watch pitchers that time and again put us in a position to win, but the offense is asleep at the switch.

Jay...my point of comparison is pretty much what you said. If things start falling into place this team could easily wind up like the '05 team. Of course not all things about the two teams are exact, but there are very similar circumstances. This team is dealing with unexpected losses earlier, but hopefully can overcome their problems and finish on a streak. With our pitching, I don't think it is over the top to think we could win the rest of our series. As stated above, we certainly should not be swept by anyone.

Basically, there is no reason for anyone to think this team can't put things together like the '05 team did when it counted.

I don't get to many games, but I was there Saturday. I actually thought we hit the ball better than I was expecting. If not for a wind-blown 3-run homer and some poor baserunning, we probably sweep Tech. We hit some shots right at their RF. Our pitching looked very strong especially Jungmann. I'd say our chances in a regional are excellent. With our pitching, all we need to do is scratch out a few runs and be smart on the basepaths. The one thing that shocked me was that we did not attempt one stolen base all game. I have yet to know how well tech's catcher throws. Even when our CF gets a lead off walk? Shouldn't he be the fastest guy on the team? And in the 9th, they were playing behind the runner at first and no steal. You gotta take that base because the last out was a force at 2nd. I noticed listening to the game on Sunday we at least stole some bases. So it was encouraging to hear we made some adjustment there.

I am concerned that this team is 4 games shy of the half-way point in the season and they still have to *put* things together to get where they want to go. The concern should be can they *keep* things together.

Comparisons have been made to the 2005 championship team. Let's compare them to the 2008 team that didn't even host its own regional...

Record after 24 games: 17-7
Final record: 39-22
Conference: 15-12
Won Big XII Tourney
Eliminated in Rice Regional 7-4. Rice committed 6 errors in the final game and the Horns couldn't win.

The Horns look more like the 2008 team than the 2005 one. Since 2005 they have not made it out of the regionals - two of which they were national seeds and hosted.

They have a long way to go. Hopefully Coach Garrido can get them there. We'll see...

UT HornFan: One difference, though. Bad pitching almost *never* turns around. Either you have pitching or not. Hitting *can* turn around though, and can be cold for 10-15 games at a stretch sometimes. Perhaps we have had a very cold start for the bats.

Good pitching can become bad during the season - meaning we could go the other way - but I hope not. Last year's team's pitching was bad and there was hardly any depth. It was never going to work out and many of us knew by half-way point that we did not have it in us to be any sort of a contendor with that pitching.

As of now, with our batting, we are not serious contendors, but if the bats improve even a teeny bit (which can happen), we could roar into serious contention with our pitching. We could well sweep every series from here on, dropping just 4 or 5 games.

Well, I would worry a little less about bats going totally cold for one week (which is all that has happened so far, that has caused serious concerns in us). For the rest of the games, they have hit decently. We do seem to be hitting well for some 3-4 games in a row now again, and may be, just may be, the bats will hold up for a 5 run per game average from now on. That is all we need. We have one of the very best pitching staffs in the country, and have serius depth too - it is not fluke.

Let us wait for another 10 more games and see where the batting again goes totally anemic or whether they stay decent like in the last 3-4 games. That is the key.

R.J.

Our pitching is excellent. Consider the pitcher working it everytime he's up in rotation and not getting the run support. It really stinks. Pitchers can't win every game without support, it's not possible. Our batters must come up and play to the expectations that are out there. Our pitching will stay stillar. Our bats must come alive. Once they do come alive and on a consistent basis, we'll be damn tough to beat.

I'm not comparing '08 pitching and hitting to '09 pitching and hitting. I am looking at WINS & LOSSES. Last time I checked, and correct me if I'm wrong, but 17-7 = 17-7. Same results - different reasons for it.

Hitting is the easiest aspect of the game to correct. At this point in the season, there is no reason to think things won't improve. If the pitching can maintain their current level of play, and if the hitting can get to that level, the Horns will not just be a contender -- they will be the favorite to win it all.

Through the first 24 games, the results have been the same as last year. That is all I was saying.

At this point we all have our opinions/theories, but like I said, the next 2-3 weeks will tell the story of the 2009 Horns.

ORU
3 @ #15 OSU
#25 TCU
3 @ Nebraska

3 vs #10 Oklahoma

A couple of thoughts...

First of all, I did notice on Sunday that by the bottom of the 6th inning, we had stolen 3 of 4 bases. I'm not sure why we didn't attempt a stolen base on Saturday unless they had a different catcher out there. Of course too it has a lot to do with the Pitcher's motions. Either way, I was glad to see us drive em crazy with the steals.

I did not realize we had such a poor conference record in 2005. What a totally crazy year. What was even crazier was 2004 with CSF in the CWS finals (grrrr) but anyways... that is cool to know that we have won all the marbles while not playing to well in conference. I believe we finish somewhere around 17-10.

We are 4-5 now. I think we go...
@ OSU 2-1
@ NU 2-1
vs. OU 2-1
vs. KSU 3-0 (though their friday starter is awesome)
vs. BU 2-1
vs aTm 2-1

Someone mark this bizatch down...

This would mean that we are in contention for the Big 12 regular season title, but I have a feeling someone else may finish with less losses.

If this is the case and we take care of biz in our midweek games, which I believe we will do, then we can definitely host.

The only team that is playing great baseball right now is CSF, which I hate to mention twice in the same post, but those dudes are hands down the best in the land. Dont even think about an ACC team, they always look good right now and tank in the end.

17-10 would be insanely awesome considering the KU sweep.
