Tebow and Collier

Two rich and famous athletes looking for a new contract, Tim Tebow and Jason Collier, have been in the news for vastly different reasons.

Tebow was let go by the Jets after they decided to go elsewhere for quarterback help. Collier came out of the closet while seeking a new NBA contract as a player generally viewed as pretty good.

Tebow has been the object of some ridicule because of his conspicuous Christianity and his fame as a quarterback despite lacking the quick throwing motion and accuracy many think necessary for sustained NFL success. Collier seems to be getting support from all over.

My take. I like both those guys and the fact that they are willing to put their beliefs in practice. I feel sorry for neither.

I have a lot of respect for Jason Collins (not Collier, btw). Not because he is gay but because of his guts in coming out of the closet (especially as a free agent) and the way he has handled himself so far in interviews. He seems like a really good person.

My problem with Tebow is not him at all. He also seems like a really good person. It is the fact that both media and fans seems to think he is a much better quarterback than he is. And, yes, I know that is not his fault. It just can get on my nerves.

I like Tebow as a player more than I used to like him. He has always been a very average QB but seemed like a good leader, a hard worker, and a person who was willing to learn. I think such players are good for the locker room (except I get the feeling that Tebow is too preachy in his beliefs).

A friend of mine who played pro ball told me that when you get to the NFL, everyone is a good athlete. The main criteria separating players is their dedication to the sport. Guys who party and miss practice generally aren't going to survive in the league very long.

Looking at Tebow, his form is a lot better now than it was when he first came into the league. And his decision making has improved over time. I wouldn't ever take him as a starter but I would take him as a back-up who would be a good influence, keep his head in the game, and come in for spot minutes.

Collins -- how embarrassing.

By "pretty good' i mean he's been good enough to hold a spot on an NBA roster for a while. NBA rosters are populated by athletes of unreal physical gifts and a lot of skills.

I don't know Deez, if I was a GM, I wouldn't take him partially because he did come out. Everyone in the league already knew that he was gay. I doubt too many GMs care about his sexual orientation unless it created a lot of problems in the locker room. However, GM's do care about his basketball skills. And as far as the NBA goes, his basketball skills are below average for the league. So now you can find many guys of equal skill who aren't going to be a distraction in every city the team travels. My guess is that the player already knew this and knew his basketball career was ending. This was a way to begin his second career whatever that may be. The publicity will certainly help him get a job in radio, television or film. It would also help him on the reality show circuit. But I think it will harm his NBA career.

Undeniably Collins is trending down and gay or not there is a very good possibility that he was/is not going to get a contract for next season to play in the NBA. If he never plays another minute in the NBA, then how is this different than a player coming out of the closet after retiring?

I find it hard to believe that coming out isn't going to make it easier for him to get a contract for at least one season. The last thing the NBA is going to want is there to even be a debate on why he didn't get a contract.

I agree with Roger
collins will get a contract somewhere
and I think that is why he did it

a one yera contract isn't bad money and I don't fault him for doing it at this time

But be honest he is NOT a pretty good player. He is tall and you can't teach tall. For many teams he was insurance for a little help inside if their big men go down.
let's not make it more than it is. Leave that up to BO

In other news, Destinee Hooker and her husband are expecting first child!

She confirmed she will be ready for the 2016 Olympics!!!!
