The Texas Longhorns were tabbed the Team of the Decade (2000-09) in a poll of Division I baseball coaches, Baseball America announced on Wednesday. The publication also released an All-Decade Team which included former Longhorns Kyle Russell and Huston Street.
The Longhorns received 32.6 percent of the vote and topped the likes of Oregon State (24.6%), North Carolina (8.6%) and Rice (6.0%) in the balloting for Team of the Decade.
In the 10-year span from 2000-09, the Longhorns advanced to the College World Series on six occasions, capturing two titles (2002, '05) and finishing as runner-up twice (2004, '09). Texas also won six regional titles, five Big 12 Conference regular-season titles and four Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship crowns. The Longhorns also boasted 36 First Team All-Big 12 performers, 21 All-Americans and 21 Freshman All-Americans during the span.
Street was an overwhelming choice as the top relief pitcher of the decade, receiving 79.3 percent of the vote. Street logged a 1.31 ERA and a school-record 41 saves from 2002-04. A three-time All-American, Street was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 College World Series as a freshman.
Russell earned an all-decade team spot in the outfield by finishing third in balloting with 9.8 percent of the vote. A first-team All-American and Golden Spikes Award finalist in 2007, he set school records for most home runs in a season (28 - 2007) and in a career (57). He also set the UT career mark for slugging percentage (.683).
Augie Garrido was edged out for Coach of the Decade voting by the narrowest of margin. His 24.6 percent of the vote trailed only Oregon State's Pat Casey who tallied 25.3 percent.
