Team Batting Average is Anemic ...

Kinda concerned at this point. The only guy on our entire team hitting over .300 is now on the bench (Hernandez .330). We are hitting .271 as a team, and with it being so early in the year it's even more alarming. You'd think that having only played 20 games the averages would be inflated right now.

Here are the averages for the past 10 years or so ...
1999 - .296
2000 - .303
2001 - .290
2002 - .304
2003 - .303
2004 - .289
2005 - .302
2006 - .296
2007 - .316
2008 - .306

With this pitching, if we could just plate 4-5 runs a game we would be in solid position. Up 1-0 on DBU in the 5th.

Kansas - .287
Oklahoma - .348
Baylor - .301
Nebraska - .292
Texas A&M - .277
Mizzou - .256
Texas Tech - .295
Kansas State - .346
OSU - .318

This team reminds me of some of Gus' teams.

They take way too many pitches. Most of our hitters don't seem to start swinging until there are 2 strikes. That sure makes it tough to get a pitch to hit.

I'm sorry, Scooter, could you repeat that?

Unbelievable that at the University of Texas, a program rich with tradition, we can't fnd kids who can put ball to bat.

I've always heard great pitching will make up for poor hitting, but so far this team has proven otherwise.

Our hitting is bad. We score 2 in the 1st inning today then get shut out for the next 8 innings. If we don't get this worked out we're in for another dissapointing season.

This is the fourth year (third?) of offensive inadequacy. something has got to be wrong with our offensive coaching.

Who is responsible for identifying talent to recruit, and who is the batting coach?

Answer those questions and I think you'll have your answer as to who is not doing his job.

Team scoring

Through first 11 games (11-0) = 61/11 = 5.5
Through next 10 games (4-6) = 31/10 = 3.1
Through last 7 games (5-2) = 40/7 = 5.7

Are we done with our batting slump now? May be a bit too early to tell. If we can score near 6, our nation-leading pitching staff can ensure a pretty damn good season. Need to keep our eyes on the batting.

Since this thread started with just one player with a BA over .300, now we have imprived to three guys. Hernandez at .318, Tucker at .314 and Belt at .308. Some signs of life? I hope so.

Well, the bottom line is that except for the 3-6 slump caused by totally dead batting, we are kicking *** wth a 17-2 record, thanks to our pitching! In other words, I suspect that the sky is not falling.

I feel a bit better following the OSU series ... one thing that concerns me is we tend to get like 5 runs in an inning, then struggle to scratch 1 or 2 more as the game progresses.

Cut me some slack, UT Horn. Trying to find positives whichever way I can, about the batting!

Of course, take away the 8 games when we played badly, and we are undefeated. What is wrong with that?

If the bats stay at a 5.5+ average, we won't lose more than 3 or 4 more games in the remaining regular season. But will they stay away from a bad slump? We will see...

While our team batting average has actually dipped since I started this thread to .269, some of our expected leaders are getting their swings back (Tucker/Belt):

Tucker .321
Belt .318
Hernandez .313

Team BA is still very low...but there are some very encouraging signs lately… 11 hits last night vs TCU (and the Frogs threw some of their best pitchers – Lockwood is their ace and Holle leads the team in ERA). We had 13 hits (albeit all singles) on Sunday and had 9 hits and 7 runs against OSU last Friday with Andy Oliver on the mound.

Keith Moreland proclaimed last night that the offense for Texas is back on track and the Big 12 needs to watch out – He maybe getting a little ahead of himself, I really hope that he is correct. But the last few games have been an improvement.

But of course Texas still leads the Country in ERA and is leading the Big 12 in Fielding.

i'd rather have good pitching and defense than good offense and mediocre defense. this is a good team.

64 runs in the last 10 games since the bats woke up. 8-2 record. That would do. We won two games today at Lincoln where the pitchers needed the bats.

From the dire situation we had when this thread started, we have nicely recovered. Keys and Torres also have joined the .300 club with 5 guys right now. BA has moved up to 284, but we are hitting just around .300 as a team for the last 15 games. Keep it up horns!

The team BA over the last 16 games is 0.306 ... The bats got going a couple of games after this thread started. Averaging 6.7 runs per game in this stretch.

I believe we have 13 home runs also in those 16 games, after hitting just 6 in the first 23 games, if I remember correctly.
