FUN FACTS:
  • TCU has gone 2-8 in games before facing Texas the past 10 years, and 3-6 in games after facing the Longhorns, yet has gone 7-2 against UT the last nine years.
  • Gary Patterson ranks first nationally among head coaches (past and present) in winning percentage against Texas (.700) - minimum of 6 games played.
(Okay, yeah, those aren't fun facts at all.)

Scouting Report: TCU
Offense
Max Duggan will be facing Texas for the 3rd time in his career and Longhorn fans are well aware at how dangerous he can be, particularly with his legs. As a passer, Duggan appears to be the same player he's been the previous few years. If he's connecting on deep throws, the TCU offense can be explosive and put up points. The problem for the Horned Frogs has been Duggan's inconsistency when pushing the ball down the field.

Former 5-star Zach Evans ended up in Fort Worth following a wild recruitment and is on pace to have a big sophomore season. Evans leads the team in rushing with 330 yards and is averaging close to 8 yards a carry.

In the passing game, the clear #1 target for Duggan is former Texas commit Quentin Johnston. Taye Barber... has had good games against Texas each of the last 2 years and is coming off a strong performance last week (5 catches for 114 yards and a TD).

The TCU offensive line has not been very good through the first 3 games of the season. Against Cal and SMU, the unit combined to allow 5 sacks. The tackle tandem of Obinna Eze and Andrew Coker is solid, but Texas should be able to create some interior pressure against the TCU guards.

Defense
Gary Patterson had to be fuming after his side of the ball allowed 350 rushing yards against the Mustangs. The TCU defensive line offered very little resistance and allowed SMU to rush for 6.7 yards per carry. The Horned Frogs were without several defensive starters this past week and Patterson wasn't too interested in revealing too much when asked if they would play against the Longhorns. Two of those players are DT Corey Bethley and DE Khari Coleman. The return of one or both would significantly bolster the ability for TCU to defend the run.

In the backend, TCU has one of the best corners in the country in Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson. #2 corner Noah Daniels has yet to play this year due to injury but could return this weekend. That would be big news for TCU because their corners opposite of Hodges-Tomlinson have struggled mightily.

Gary Patterson has fielded much stronger defensive units during his tenure in Fort Worth and SMU exposed several holes the Horned Frogs have, especially along the defensive line and at linebacker.

Final Thoughts
I fully expect Texas to see a completely different team than the one the Horned Frogs put on the field against SMU last Saturday. It's no secret that Gary Patterson always has his team ready to play Texas.

The biggest key for Texas will be slowing down the running game of TCU, specifically the QB run game. Last year, Max Duggan broke off several explosive runs and the Longhorns simply can not let that happen again if they hope to win. If Texas can slow him and Zach Evans down, TCU will be in trouble.

ZACH EVANS - RB

Defense gonna have a big game, which will be necessary to give them the confidence to stop Lincoln.

I see this game as the quintessential "Texas is back" game. Except this time its gonna be for real. Patterson has got to know it. Sark means business and he is going to embarrass him.

The fact that the country will be watching another game is going to add to the mystique of this 2021 Texas Longhorns season.

I bet Evans sports a few more (of his many) tattoos after our defenders tattoo his dumb arse on Saturday. Might even be worth a targeting call or two (just not in the second half). This would be a real good chap for BJ Foster to get acquainted with.

Godz40.1 is back y'all !

Good scouting report on the toads!

Patterson will have 'em ready. Just hope rain does not harm the game.

Several things from the videos stand out to me, and I hope Sark & Co. can gameplan for them:
  • Almost every time TCU doesn't pass the ball, they either run or punt it.
  • Whenever the offense crosses the goal line, they score. That's dangerous.
  • Patterson loves to call the hitch play. On the sideline. For himself.

Speaking of BJ Foster, why is he even on the field?!?!? Every since he ran his mouth about Jalen Hurts in 2019, he is a liability. Hell, last week he got juked by Tyler Slough for a touchdown. Very disappointed that Sark kept him as a starter. Besides he quit the time twice!

And you just couldn't leave this here. You decided it had to have its own separate thread.

I wouldn't bag on Evans too much. He may have been a head case during his recruiting process, but everything I've heard is that he has been put together since arriving at TCU. He's averaging 7.9 ypc this year. If it's raining and he get's the ball 25 times beware.

On Offense
TCU scares me Offensively. Duggan is a wildcard that loves to see Burnt Orange. Zach Evans was the darling of Texas recruiting fans for about 2 years. Quentin Johnston was a one-time Texas commit only to be stolen before Signing Day. Savion Williams was heavily-pursued by Texas but chose to play for TCU in part because of being sold on development issues at Texas. TCU’s OL has struggled this season.

Max Duggan has never lost to Texas in his college career and he seems to save his best performances for the Longhorns.I’m concerned about him extending drives with his legs and chucking it deep to one of their tall playmakers once he’s escaped pressure.

The uber-talented RB Zach Evans was rated higher than Bijan Robinson coming out of high school... It’s going to be fascinating to watch him carry the load on Saturday against Texas.

Quentin Johnston and Savion Williams are tall, long, fast, and vertically explosive on the Outside. This is probably the most physically-gifted WR core that Texas has faced so far, this season.

Taye Barber and JD Spielman are YAC guys that are dangerous in open space. This could potentially be a big problem area on Saturday for the Longhorns.

Folks I’ve spoken to that cover the program are down on the Offensive Line right now and they’re even lower on the OL Coach. I’m of the opinion that this group doesn’t lack for talent. RT Andrew Coker was a Texas priority coming out of high school.

LT Obinna Eze (6’8 330) was a much-celebrated transfer addition during the off-season from Memphis. He’s considered a potential Day 2 NFL draft pick.

On Defense
The Horned Frogs run Gary Patterson’s patented 4-2-5 look... Winters and Mathis are the best players on the Defense. TCU is going to try to confuse Casey Thompson pre-snap and I have to believe the gameplan centers around stopping Bijan Robinson. I reckon that Casey Thompson is going to have to use his legs a bit on Saturday.

DE Ochaun Mathis is the best DL on the team and best pass rusher. He will probably play on Sundays.

NT Corey Bethley has been around seemingly forever. He’s a stout presence in the middle.

Their MIKE, Dee Winters, is a sideline to sideline type that is considered one of the better LBs in the Big XII.

CB Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson is considered a big-time guy (potential Day 2 pick or higher)... Texas can attack CB C.J. Ceasar II.

WS T.J. Carter has a ton of experience after being a 4-year starter at Memphis and is their best Safety.

Overall Thoughts …
TCU isn’t lacking for talent at skill positions. Quentin Johnston scares the crap out of me. TCU has the ability to give the Longhorns and PK major issues Defensively and you know they’re going to play with passion against the Texas Offense. Texas has to withstand TCU’s best punches early in this one and protect the football.

I found it interesting that Hodges-Tomlinson doesn’t travel with the opposing team’s best WR or spend any time playing in the Nickel. That will be easy for Sark to gameplan around. We can expect Zone and Safety help rolled to Ceasar’s side of the field. I think I’m more concerned about Texas defending TCU than I am about Texas being able to put up points.

BJ Foster adds plenty of value in very hard tackling, finding the ball, blitzing, and the occasional interception, tipped ball, or other big play. He does not excel in coverage of the real speed burner-type WRs, but overall, he's certainly a good enough DB. Coach PK likes his skill set and speaks highly of him.

Excellent write up. My wife is a TCU alum and has season tickets, so I've watched every game this year (of course I'll be there tomorrow in Burnt orange. )Quinton Johnson scares the crap out of me as does the rest of their offense including Zach Evans, he single-handedly won their game vs Cal. They were missing 2 starters on DL last week and that made a lot of difference because the back-ups are undersized. They always play the underdog strategy vs Texas, but to be honest, they are better at a lot of positions. Their mantage is "Defy & Deny" They hate Texas more than beating their rival, SMU. This will be an Arkansas type effort from them. We will see if Sark and our team learned from that game. I bet they load the box on 1st and 2nd down and then drop into coverage on 3rd down. Hopefully, we will hit some quick hitters on early downs then establish the run and wear them down. If they fall behind they get antsy and throw on every down, so then you can tee off on them. Hopefully, we can get to that point. Hook em

Show me the hard tackling. He had the one hit vs West Virginia in 2019. Then nothing after that..

I hope you get to enjoy your day at Amon Carter tomorrow. :hookem::hookem::hookem:

I feel better about this game against TCU then I have any other in the last four years. For starters, Sark is not Tom Herman. Herman‘s teams were always undisciplined and made backbreaking mistakes. Just did a rewatch of the last two years, Texas had 19 penalties and six turnovers in two games.

Sark would burn the whole damn thing down before the game ended if that was happening.

You betcha.

With Charlie or Tom as our coach, you just knew Patterson was going to out-coach us and find a way to beat us more often than not.

I was at the 2019 game at Amon Carter, Ehlingher threw 4 picks and wasn't playing well at all. Even during warm ups he looked bad, but did he think about pulling him? Nope. We still had Tim Beck to thank for abandoning the run in the 2nd half. Speaking of Tim, he's an assistant coach for Gary now...

This year's TCU squad has the worst D-front and LB squad I've ever seen from a Patterson team. And we've got a lot more electrifying playmakers on Offense than SMU did...

Still, when we play against a Patterson-coached TCU team, I get that same feeling I get when we play BYU, Stanford, KSU under Snyder, or UCLA. Hopefully that all ends tomorrow.

This game will be a good test of our new coaching squad. Patterson and his assistants will be prepared, and they will adjust well during the game.

Friday math quiz:

:ut:D's probability of slowing down Evans

>, =, or <

:tcu:D's probability of slowing down Bijan
I’ll take the Texas d. Not that I am sold on their run stopping after the Arkansas game, I just don’t think many teams can slow down Bijan. Dude is a freak
