TCU (8-18, 1-14) will seek to snap a 32 game losing streak to Texas (10-16, 3-12) this Tuesday night in Austin. This will be the 33rd meeting between the two teams. The last time these two met before this season was Dec. 10, 2002. On Feb. 2, 2013, Texas and TCU met in Ft. Worth for the first time in 11 years with Texas pulling off a 61-56 win. The two teams are the youngest in the league with Texas starting three freshmen and having two others coming off the bench for significant minutes along with a JC Jr. transfer. TCU also starts three freshmen but the bench is consists of two sophs and two seniors, a slight edge in experience. TCU and Texas are 1-1 over the last two games. One of the two will snap a one game losing streak.
Chassidy (13.7 ppg), Nneka (11.5 ppg) and Imani (10.7 ppg) give the Horns three players averaging double figures in league games. Add in Empress’ 8.2 ppg and those four starters are responsible for 77.5% of Texas scoring. They account for 71% of FGs attempted and 75.5% of FGs made. Brady and Gigi, each averaging 3.7 ppg, are the main scorers off the bench. From BTA, Chassidy (24-81, 29.6%) and Gigi (8-28, 28.6%) are the main shooters for Texas. Brady leads the team in FT percentage at 86.7% (26-30) with Nneka as the player that has the most FTs made and attempted (35-50, 70.0%). Imani joins Brady and Nneka in making at least 70% of their FTs at 76.2% (32-42).
Imani tops the team with a rebounding average 9.6 rpg while Nneka averages 7.4 rpg. Seven Horns have at least 11 assists with Celina’s 46 leading the group. Empress is second with32 and Chassidy has a total of 24. Imani has 35 blocks in conference games. Nneka is second on the team with nine blocks. All of the ten active players have at least one steal. Celina (19), Nneka (18), Chassidy (15) and Brady (11) lead the team.
Of the ten active players, eight form the main rotation with Chassidy, Nneka, Imani, Empress and Celina starting the last game. Empress and Imani have started all 15 league games with Nneka (14) and Chassidy (13) getting starts in all games they were able to play in. Celina has gotten 10 starts. Gigi and Sara have one start each while Brady has played in all 15 games. Three Horns are averaging over 30 mpg: Chassidy (35.2 mpg), Empress (33.0 mpg) and Nneka (30.9 mpg). Imani (28.1 mpg) and Celina (26.5 mpg) are in the twenties with Brady, Gigi and Sara averaging at least 10 mpg.
TCU has two players in double figure scoring: Zahna Medley (# 14, 5-6 Fr. G) at 11.7 ppg and Natalie Ventress (# 24, 5-10 Soph. G) with an average of 10.5 ppg. Kamy Cole (# 11, 5-9 Fr. G) is third on the team in scoring at 9.6 ppg. Those three players have taken at least 100 shots: Medley (55-184, 29.9%), Ventress (48-155, 31.0%) and Cole (50-153, 32.7%). Latricia Lovings (# 21, 6-3 Jr. C) is likely to join the 100+ FG attempt club after the Texas game as she currently is 37-93 (39.8%). TCU takes 39% of their shots from BTA. Medley (35-121, 28.9%), Ventress (25-65, 38.5%) and Cole (26-87, 29.9%) are the main 3pt threats for the Horned Frogs. Ventress is the best Horned Frog from the FT line at 82.2% (37-45). Cole at 75% (18-24) is the second most accurate. Medley is the one that gets to the FT line the most (31-50, 62.0%).
Lovings is the top rebounder (8.5 rpg) and shot blocker (49) for TCU. Veja Hamilton (# 3, 5-10 Fr. G/F) is second with 4.9 rpg while Ventress adds 4.1 rpg. Ashley Colbert (# 44, 6-3 Soph. C) is second in blocks with six. Medley, in addition to being the top scorer for TCU, is tops at assists (69). Ventress and Cole are tied for second in assists with 17 each. Hamilton is third with 16. Cole leads a group of six who have double digit steals with 29. Donielle Breaux (# 33, 5-10 Soph. G) is second with 18.
Seven players have started at least two games in league play. Medley, Ventress and Lovings have started all 15 Big 12 games to date. Hamilton has started 13 and Cole 12. Eight players have gotten all 15 game with Colbert having played in 14. Medley averages 33.1 mpg while Ventress checks in at 30.7 mpg. Cole, Lovings and Hamilton all average over 20 mpg. Three others average in double digit minutes.Projected starters:
[pre]
Texas TCU
Imani (6-7 Fr. C) Lovings (6-3 Jr. G)
Nneka (6-1 Soph. F) Hamilton (5-10 Fr. F)
Chassidy (5-10 Jr. G) Ventress (5-10 Soph. F)
Empress (5-7 Fr. G) Medley (5-7 Fr. G)
Celina (5-8 Fr. G) Cole (5-9 Fr. G) [/pre]
TCU is not only young but they are small, similar in size to KSU. Medley and Ventress are their top scorers with Cole also dangerous from the floor. Lovings comes into the game as a big time shot blocker and rebounder but not a proficient scorer at 5.9 ppg. Those three were the leading scorers for TCU in the first game with support from Breaux off the bench. Texas was led by the inside duo of Nneka and Imani with Nneka having more success scoring (7-12 for 16 pts) while Imani prospered at the FT line (13-14) while scoring 23 pts. Both had 13 rebs with Imani also getting 7 blocks. For Texas, the defensive focus will be improved defense of the perimeter players, especially from the 3pt line. TCU, with the improved scoring of the Texas guards, will have a harder time on defense. They will need to cover Imani and Nneka inside while also trying to slow down Chassidy and Empress who have started to be consistent scoring from the perimeter.

This will be a battle between the two lowest scoring teams in the league. Their defense is not as bad as they rank in the middle of the pack on scoring defense. They are 9-10 in scoring margin, mainly due to problems scoring. Per the stats, this should be another close game. TCU will be hard pressed to stop the Texas inside game unless they get the Texas posts in trouble. Texas will need to improve their 3pt defense, which ranks 9th in the league. Texas should dominate on the boards, especially on the offensive end. TCU has an advantage in not giving up as many TOs as Texas does. They are also more proficient in stealing the ball than Texas but, on the hand, they get the ball stolen a bit more than they take it away. Lovings will have to contend with both Nneka and Imani on the boards. Texas has shown a tendency to be stronger in the second half while TCU is a shade less proficient scoring in the second than in the first. Both use 8-9 players in the rotation. TCU has a more experienced bench of four while Texas depends on a rotation of three bench players.
