Taxes

Just got a bill for19800 for the year 2008. It has the wrong social number on it. Wonder if it will be as easy as just saying wrong social or is this going to be a nightmare. Anyone had this happen?

it is going to be a nightmare. The IRS is run like a collection Agency and they don't give a **** what is right or wrong, they want to get paid and not right anything off, or try to correct anything because that takes time away from collecting and making commissions.

You damned wealthy tax evader! Doesn't really matter if you are or not......you are now.

You're the reason two people are unemployed because, as you know, every tax dollar trickles down as five.

Seriously, I'm sorry for what's happening to you. This tax system sucks ***!

Mojo,

I'm assuming the notice has your name on it but someone else's number. If you haven't already, call customer service and get someone to take a look at it. If this is the 1st notice, the chances are about 75% you'll get someone competent that will be able to figure out if an error was made and either get it corrected or write up a referral.

I can think of a few possibilities.
1) The person who input the letter may have had your account up prior to the account with the intended Social Security number and therefore your name and address was inserted.
2) Sometimes relatives get their SSNs crossed up when filing a return. For example, a preparer may pull the wrong brother out of the data base and criss-cross the names with the SSNs are something like that.
3) You screwed up and we will take every penny you have.

If you wait until the account reaches collection status (usually after the 3rd notice goes out) you'll be transferred to collections and probably speak with some goon.

Never call the first day after a weekend are the hold time will be long. Tuesday-Friday is preferable if you don't have 20 minutes to kill.

It is a large amount b/c you are talking about taxes. However I have been misbilled many times from private companies. It usually takes me a long time on the phone and unneeded stress to resolve the situation. So we can rail on gov't all we want but this can happen anywhere.

Feel for you Mojo - IRS is relentless, merciless, and too often incompetent - but not to worry they will be overcome with a kinder and gentler attitude when they become the ACA police.

Spoke to an Irs person who was very rude. I explained that they sent me a tax bill I did not owe and that the assigned ss number was wrong. She wantedmy social and I did not give it to her because I feared they would just change the number and send it to me. I got frustrated and said something about government workers being the employees of the people. That pretty much ended the conversation. Believe me I had every intention of being cordial but this lady was ready for a fight as soon as she got on the phone. Should I get a lawyer?-

call again and when you get someone who you feel will look out for your best interest, then give her the info. she needs to do her job

The first thing a customer service person is instructed to do is ask disclosure questions. This is required before they can access the account. The first question will be what is your Social Security number. They will then ask for your name, address, and date of birth. If you do not answer these questions, they will not (by law) access your account. That does not excuse being rude however.

Suppose you give your information to the representative. The proper response would be to access your account first to see if it is in order. Assuming it is, it would next be logical to go to the other Social Security number - the one on the letter - and compare the birth date and account information on that number to yours.

The customer service rep would not be allowed to disclose information to you about the account on the other number since that number does not belong to you, but they could and should confirm whether or not there is a mistake on that account and what they intend to do about it.

yeah, and these are the people we want running our health care

All areas of gvt are just the major suck!! It just floors me how in every level of gvt at allmost any department you can hardly find anyone that has at least half a brain!

I've been dealing with the IRS lately. Hold times are usually well over an hour, especially in the evening. (the only time of day I have time to be on hold at all)

Just a quick update on the tax problem, I have done everything each IRS person has asked of me ,and I still am getting notices. I have sent multiple letters, been on hold for hours and still they can't figure it out. The last gentleman was sympathetic and told me to mail back all notices with return to sender on it . He said the best thing that could happen would be a visit from an IRS agent so I could explain it in person. They all agree the tax bill has the wrong social on it but there is nothing they can do. So here I sit waiting for my visit. Do these guys carry guns and will they be beligerent? Now we have these clowns over our healthcare

Mojo- I have had a similar problem. Have you made a trip to the local IRS office in your town? They can help but the experience will be frustrating. Also, ask for a supervisor every time you call them. Typically you will have to leave a number but they will call back.

To this being a govt entity, it is a perfect example of one of the reasons that govt run programs are so poor. As Mus can probably attest to, you simply can NOT call the IRS and get anyone on the phone with the authority to do anything. You can not cancel the service. More importantly, there is no better business group or chamber or watchdog type entity to go to for help. Most businesses eventually give proper service or they go out of business. The IRS certainly has some good people but there is zero incentive to go the extra mile to help and they do not care about service at all. What is your alternative if you do not like their service? There is none.

mus

You offered this as one possibility for the error
") The person who input the letter may have had your account up prior to the account with the intended Social Security number and therefore your name and address was inserted. "

Really? IRS people sit and look into people's tax accounts for no apparent reason?
Now let's say that was true, freaky but true
wouldn't the IRS person have to have closed mojo's file in order to get to a file with a problem?

if you care to explain, Are problem account asifned to agents who then generate the letter?

To think an agent was looking into mojo's file and then into someone else's file who had a problem but then the agent goes back and uses mojo's name and address is scary.

I thought you'd get an error message if you used the wrong name with a SSN.
isnt that what we are told E-Verify does?

do agents look into a number of people's files every day?

Deez- I actually talked to my senator back at the time and he basically told me that him getting involved will only make them mad. He was a friend of a friend and maybe just not wanting to get involved. he just said to keep trying. Eventually it got resolved correctly. The sad thing was that the issue took about 10 minutes to resolve after 6 months of work.

My experiences with the IRS, the Post Office and the local tax offices have always been more cordial and fruitful than dealing with the cable company and large banks. Generalizations about government employees being unintelligent are BS. The postal service tests for intellect. Its employees are generally smarter than folks in a private business making the same income. Alas in everything, they have tried to automate customer service, put cheap people on the phone, give them little authority and when you ask them for something way out of the ordinary, they have no procedures, no access to supervisors and have to figure it out with you while you are on the phone. The instant your call drops they are talking to somebody new. Knowing they won't get to take a breath until their next break, maybe 2 1/2 hour away, they are a little irritable and with people's expectations that they are lazy, stupid and don't care. You get anger all the while, pretty soon that's what you're dishing out. You think people in Philadelphia are genetically different than the polite folks you meet on the street in Bastrop or Athens?
