I just recieved my W2 from my last employer who let me go earlier this month (I was employed with them all of 2008). Anyway the Gross income is quite a bit lower than my acutual gross for 2008.

I found out this has happened to everyone I know in the company. Is this legal for them to do this?

No its not legal for them to put the wrong amount on your W-2.

Did you get bonuses? If so, were they less than the previous year?

Also, keep in mind if you earn money in say Dec 2007 but get paid in jan 2008 they may include it in 2008. Right or wrong, it happens..

Did you participate in a cafeteria plan or health insurance plan that was taken out of your pay on a pre-tax basis? If so, that portion of your gross won't show up on your W-2.

What LadyHorn said. Some of your deductions are taken on a pre-tax basis and may well be responsible for the difference you are seeing.
