Targeting needs to be targeted

I saw two very similar hits in games today that were called targeting. The first was in our game. The second was in the Iowa State game by Iowa State #32. Both were against qbs and neither severe In the slightest. In fact, it looked like both players tried to pull up. If someone wants to call unnecessary roughness, fine, though I personally think that’s close at best. But to call targeting and eject those players is too much In my view. The rule requires an element of attacking. That seemed lacking in both instances. All there seemed to be was hitting of helmets. But that’s going to happen. Maybe someone on this board can explain why the policy makes sense, but to my eye it seems incredibly over-reactive
 
I’m in favor of protecting the QBs, but I agree with you the targeting calls are getting out of hand and ejection from the game is too harsh with the advantage going to offenses. Our call today he had his hands up so it wasn’t just spearing him with the crown of the helmet.
 
To clarify, I agree with protecting QBs too, and perhaps that was the plus factor. But, like the rest of officiating, it’s seems overkill and hyper-technical. Imagine if they technically enforced holding ...
