Tap the Brakes-Reality Check

Perhaps it's my cynical nature, but my mind continues to concoct plausible scenarios in which all this late interest shown by Murray, Lodge, Soso and Mack ultimately turns out to be nothing more than some insidious charade.
My thinking is the Murrays realize there's a 99% chance Kyler goes MLB. What better finger in the eye of your hated rival than to string them along, get them truly believing in the possibility of a mega recruiting coup, spurn them at the last moment, and in the process significantly disrupt what could have been (may still be) a very solid, need addressing recruiting class.
I realize the mere possibility of their interest being genuine demands that we make the effort, but their late "interest" and the ripple effect it's caused in our recruiting class is considerable.
BTW, my neurotic mind also thinks Lodge, Soso and Mack may in fact be somewhat unwitting participants in this whole thing, with a greater than zero chance they decide to chart their own course, which may in the end benefit us. I hope I'm dead wrong, and if so I'll happily eat crow and welcome these studs to the Longhorn family. I must say this whole process has been quite entertaining and the intrigue is delicious.

I agree tap the brakes hard. If there is one certainty we've learned from the new, unpredictable, empty-worded style shown by today's recruits, it's that these guys love attention and intrigue all the way until the fat lady sings. Realizing there are 10 days left til signing day, I'm very uncomfortable so many shocking signs are aligning in our favor. If it was 4 days out, maybe I'd get all excited and antsy. But in the new recruiting realm, 10 days is an eternity. And as soon as these wavering type star recruits feel they are being penciled in somewhere by the public, they always tend to throw a mean curveball.

See you all on the backstretch, but for now I'm staying fully conscious the damn could break right under our feet. And with so many of our key targets still behaving so outlandish and unpredictable, that breaking damn could be just as biblical in proportions as the Arc that may snag them all up and skyrocket our rebuild a year ahead of schedule.

I'm not counting on any of them, but it would be a pleasant surprise. Recruiting is so different now, I don't have any idea what to expect. I think it is the who impresses you on social media age.

But I like this social media era recruiting. There is a much higher level of honesty and openness now. Getting extremely difficult to pull stunts, because some other 17 year old recruit who hears even a rumor might put it on twitter without a thought! The recruits' moves are immediately documented by bystanders and put up as twitter images or vine clips, the moment they are out from the athletic center offices.

20 years ago, Louis Brown allegedly ending up (allegedly for nobody's fault but his own) in a less-than-ideal entertainment joint would be no big deal, and it could be covered up as just hearsay rumor. Now, it forces a head coach to pull the ship early next morning before anybody posts "look what Texas recruits are up to" with a picture of dollar bills flying around in front of a gyrating abdomen or some such.

While I have no idea what might transpire and can only read and hope, particularly in the case of Murray, I would be very surprised -- OK, make that shocked -- if all of the recent activity is just part of a sinester plot to embarrass Texas. He and his father have a reputation that would be badly damaged if that were the case, and I just don't see it.

So, I continue to be cautiously optimistic. We are playing a high stakes, "winner takes all" game. This time, we just might win.

I am trying to be logical about this. The well known belief is that Murray is good friends with Lodge, Mack, and
Rambo. If KM is a good friend, would he keep his friends in the dark about what is going on. Therefore, you
should believe that all four are in on whatever plan is trying to be hatched.

Now you have to add to that the ingredient that the adult KM - the father is in on this too. Yes, he is slyly risking
his reputation on some kind of teenage stunt!! You add to this that 3 of the 4 teenagers do not even intend on
going to A&M. So why would they show off to their comrades back at Collie Station. Now you add to the soup
that all these participants are wasting a bucket load of their time. So nobody in this prank is serious about
wasting so much time and the fact that the visits are mostly on their own dime.

Having said this, I am getting dizzy by all this plot. I am going back to bed, pull the covers over my head, and
hope for a good snow storm in Austin.

Sometimes it's more about the journey than the destination. I am enjoying the ride regardless of where we end up!

Tap the brakes and/or don't count your chickens before they hatch, etc.

I agree. Its entertaining, but it can also be very disappointing, frustrating etc.

I don't know how coaches deal with all the smoke being blown in and out of various orifices.

You buncha weenies. Let’s slam the accelerator to the floor, unbuckle your seat belts and start counting every damn chicken you can find, hatched or no. Life is short and we got championships to win. It will not be left to the timid.

Its easy to mistake a fluid situation for a sinister plot. Its fluid because a lot of these guys would like to play together and the ones that are truly committed are trying to get their friends, and players they think are likely contributors to go with them. Their lobbying each other with texts and at the OVs. As far as tapping the brakes, I would rather enjoy the fact that the buzz and momentum is on our side, for the minute, even with the loss of Gentry. This could either be a much better class than anyone thought we would get, or it could be one of the top in the country.

Yeah that buzz could just as easily turn into screeching butcher knives on a chalkboard if Murray stays Aggy, sways a few of the big names taking OV here this wknd, and Locksley passes. That scenario is JUST as possible as cleaning up on them.

Just saying, buying all the rumors by Horns recruiting writers who supposedly have an inside source that knows the real deal is foolish. Those guys are guessing with a tad more second hand information than anyone else. There are countless instances of those guys going overboard like this and looking clueless after the results. Coaching searches, recruiting, the list is endless. And a large portion of our fans reads their pump pieces and gets all giddy. Which keeps them throwing darts at the dartboard and getting praised when they hit 50%. Shame.

Just be very aware things change fast no matter how much of a tight posse supposedly is involved...Tim Irvin. We should be much more concerned with Gentry gone than excited of who we think we may have a shot at possibly prying from deep Aggy roots. Gentry knocking our do-or-die QB list from 3 to 2 is a fact, Murray is a risky speculation still with a hell of a lot going against us.

The end result will likely fall somewhere in the middle of crap your pants good or bad. I assume we get Locksley and a few big names, but lose out on some too. Likely Murray, Lodge, and some others. Hopefully not Mack who I value a hair behind Murray, and only because we have no QB, not potential and talent wise. Mack is my #1 recruit in terms of the domination I think he will have in college.

Just give me either of the 2 QB's and Mack and I'll call that a smash double and be happy. Add in Jamabo and it's a HR with just those 3. Expect nice results but buying into the puff pieces of we are about to clean up and clean out Aggy at same time is very unlikely. But hey, whatever makes you happy to believe in is cool too. Just been around this long enough to keep clear perspective.

Even if Murray flips and signs with the good guys on NSD, don't we still have to somewhat wait out the MLB draft and hope someone doesn't thrown 1st round money - and the stipulation he gives up football - at him??

With Gentry's flip and the current state of that position, Murray is the #1 target on the board. I'd love to get Mack, but if it is one or the other I think we need the QB worse. And I'm still hopeful for Soso, but I'm equally hopeful someone is keeping their arm around Warren.

NSD can't come soon enough.
