taking away scholarships

It's not comon place, but like all sports, a scholarship is a year to year thing. It can be pulled.

From my understanding it is common. Depends on the coach. I have heard from very reliable sources that Dave Van Horn at Arkansas and Sonny Golloway at Auburn run guys off after the fall, in essence pulling their scholarships. It is also common knowledge that both are pricks.

It's a little more common in baseball, because of the limited scholarships to player ratio. Scholarships can be broken up into segments and given out.

It used to be pretty rare that a player got a full ride.

Well. ....you can add Augie to that group.

On what basis are you saying this? Did he pull a/some scholarship(s) from someone you don't think should have lost theirs? Are you saying that once a scholarship has been awarded it can't be revoked or taken away? That the recipient can 'take the money and run"?

Enlighten us.

I'm probably being naive, but i think when someone is given a scholarship, it shouldn't be taken away unless there is some sort of disciplinary issue. Parents budget based on what the coaches have told these kids coming in. ....and yes, i know of one being taken away. I will not mention names...or say anything to imply who it was.

Within Power 5 conferences, which now have autonomy to create their own rules, 38 percent of those schools wanted to overturn the option for multiyear scholarships. Among the Power 5 conferences, only the Big 12 voted as a collective league against multiyear scholarships

The link above is a study of how many multiyear scholarships are given by the Top 25 Football Schools. Schools have the option to give a multiyear scholarship, but few do. Stats are probably similar, or even less, for baseball due to the limited 11.7 allocation. Are you aware that only 28 of the 35 player roster may receive scholarships ? 7 are walk-ons.

I have watched Texas Baseball for many years. Very, very few players did not have their scholarship renewed, and when it was not it was overall in the best interests of the player and The University.

I trust that Texas explains this to parents during the recruiting process.

Blame Augie for alot, but not this.

Your post reminds me of an old REO Speedwagon song "I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another you've been messing around."
Augie has always treated the players fairly where this topic is concerned.

As someone else stated, there are very few "full rides" in baseball. I know personally of players getting a $250-500 a semester split. I would much rather have the coach rescind that than the old trick of signing him up for Physics, Accounting, Stat 310, and so forth to be sure he flunks out.

When I came out of HS, Gil Steinke at A&I told me, "Son, I'll give you the first two years. If you're worth a ****, I'll give you two more." The guy that took that scholarship wound up being a second round pick of the Oakland Raiders. Of course, they did something in Kingsville to drop his time in the 100 from 9.9 to 9.3.

I went because I thought it was near the beach. I didn't have a car and didn't realize it was about two evolution cycles to Corpus.

Then I went to Roundup in Austin.

A&I had a hell of a good program under Steinke. And Kingsville wasn't the hole it is these days, either. I remember watching Richard Ritchie and his teammates just destroy the ever loving hell out of people during the mid to late 70s...
