Tahoe or Sequoia?

I need plenty of room for hauling the rugrat equipment (and rugrats themselves), so gotta go large SUV.

Over the July 4th weekend I saw a lot of "incentive" money being thrown around.

Money is definitely a big driver here. So I want the most bang for my buck.

Prereqs (most of which are the wife's creature comforts):
- Leather
- NAV
- DVD entertainment system for the rugrats (have thought about an aftermarket install to save some bucks)
- 2nd row captain's chairs
- handling/parking/turning more like a car than a big boat
- remote power liftgate/remote start/cooling seats are a plus
- BIG VALUE (i.e. "cheap")

Anyone have any preferences on make or specific model/package recommendations?

My understanding is that the premium once charged for toyota has now vanished bc of the economy - given that, I would go sequoia?

I have the Tahoe z71 too. Nice truck. Its probably better overall, although I like the sequoia's folding 3rd row seats. Tahoe's 3rd row is tough to manage.

I hate the tahoe's third row. Also, it does not drive like a car at all. However, I haven't driven the Sequoia so I don't know if it drives any less like a car than that. Tahoe has nice comfort features for the price, though. If you are going to drive the car 60K miles and trade it in, I might go with the Tahoe. But for real longevity I think Toyota wins.

If you're thinking full size SUV, go ahead and bump it up to a Suburban. I doubt you'll be losing much in gas mileage, and you'll have that third row seat, plus ample storage behind it.

My little people grew up into big people, and have big friends. The suburban capacity is a huge benefit. You can fit all your prereqs, but it will be a slight trade off in parking/turning.

I don't know about the Sequoia but I've driven my in laws Denali a lot and it does have a good turn radius so that it's easy to get in and out of parking spots BUT the space sucks for carrying rugrat gear. If you want the third row there isn't room for a full size stroller behind it. That was main reason we bought a Nissan Armada over the Tahoe. The third row is a lot more comfortable and you still have room to put things behind it. When we went looking we carted the stroller around and checked the fit in the back. That space behind the third row is so important.

I hear you on the used option, but two things I need to consider if I am buying this outright:

1) More warranty > less warranty (5.5 years of problem-free driving is nice, but 3.5 years is less nice)

2) With the financing you mention, and where used car financing is right now, might not cost all that much more for me if I hold it long-term (all costs considered)

I am with GMPlatter, go with the Suburban. I drive a 2007, and it is outstanding. Really not that much more expensive than the Tahoe, and a much better 3rd row.

i have an 07 ltz. i love it. i would highly recommend looking into suburbans. they are the same car, just a little longer, and usually cheaper b/c they don't have the "tahoe" name. i think next car i get will be a suburban b/c of the lower cost for basically the same thing. i got my tahoe in april of 06. there weren't a lot to choose from and friends/fam kept trying to push me towards sequoia. haven't driven one, but i hear they're nice. new body style looks close to tahoe. this is my second (first was 04 z71) and i think i'll either drive a tahoe or suburban until they stop making them.

Not sure how different the pricing is, but if all else is equal I will always choose the Toyota over the GM. I'm on my 2nd 4Runner and Toyota makes a great vehicle.

My wife's new Town and Country has all of these features plus power sliding doors which my wife loves for getting kids in and out of car seats in crowded parking spaces, much easier then doors which swing out. Your list sounds like a carbon copy of our's when we were recently shopping. We test drove a lot of SUV's and the handling is much better with the TC. That is the main reason my wife wanted it and it was hard to get her over her SUV fetish. The safety and gas mileage are better and the cost is cheaper. Also it has a rear view back-up camera my wife likes and you can watch different movies/game systems at the same time on the different DVD screens. If you haven't considered it it might be worth a look. We got ours from Maxwell in Taylor for about 300 below invoice before incentives using the fighting chance method.

I don't mind the T&C, but the wife HATES minivans and wouldn't be buried in one.

Also, currently drive a pair of Acura MDX's, do the Honda Pilot (its twinkie) isn't going to net me any improvement in capacity (need a targe-size SUV).

Thanks for the feedback all. The suburban may work nicely - and had dismissed it thinking it was too big (boat-like per the wifey pre-req).

Might have to get teh wifey to test drive it.

Second the Armada. Wife thought it was going to be too big, then drove it and would not consider anything else.

More room in second row than anything else, does not feel bulky, has all the amenities.

Buy one before production moves to Mexico in 2010.

My buddy loves his '02 Sequioa, says that it is absolutely rock solid. The new one is larger because it is based on the full-sized Tundra. I like the new look and despite gas prices am seriously looking at buying one before the years end. As far as quality, Toyota's plant in San Antonio was ranked as the number one automobile plant in North America in their first year of production by JD Power - an unprecedented feat. As I understand, the Indiana plant where the Sequoia is made "taught" the SA plant the ropes. Look at both and see which one will fill your needs.
